I have noticed a stupid trend of websites beginning to charge extra to be able to download videos and that only streaming are included in the basic membership. How do they not understand that this will cause a surge in piracy? Especially when there's no information on the join page that downloads are not included.

People that have just paid $30 for a membership expects that this includes full access to everything, including downloads, unless anything else is stated. Then having to pay between $15 to $119 to be able to download videos is just a ripoff, especially when there's no information about it before you sign up for the membership.

I recently signed up for a membership on RealityKings, having been a member there several times in the past. There is no information on the site tour or on the join page that the membership now only includes streaming, that's a nice little surprise you get once you already have paid your $30 when you log in, try to download a video and a popup appears and says you have to pay an additional $15 for downloads. I experienced a similar thing at BangBros, where they charge you extra to be able to download 4K-material.

These are amazing ways to rip off their customers. Providing no information BEFORE paying for a membership that downloads are no longer included or that you have to pay extra for certain downloads.

I purchase memberships at pornsites because i want to support production of more material, but if they're gonna hustle and cheat their customers then a lot of people will turn to piracy instead of legitimately paying for the sites.

All the Mindgeek affiliated sites use this model now where they have basically two membership layers - streaming only, which is the basic membership and then offering downloads once you pay for a higher level membership. I think they call it platinum. My guess is that this is the future.

I wasn't aware of BangBros charging extra for 4K downloads but at least they are offering 4K.

Evil Angel and I believe XEmpire are offering streaming-only or streaming + downloads memberships, but they are upfront about it. I wouldn't be surprised if all of the gamma-affiliated sites have this membership structure.

Just because you don't like it doesn't mean that it's a rip off. Also, just because you don't see the value in it doesn't mean that it will turn others to piracy.

That being said, piracy is a big reason to charge extra for downloads. The producers know very well that all their pirated content is provided from legitimate members who download, so why not charge extra?

They also presumably did the research and concluded that most people just streaming and skip through many parts of a scene so why not save on bandwidth and make a few more bucks?

______________

What's the study, survey or show of hands in a sizeable sample you've done to show a good chance that previously paying customers will turn to piracy?

Is it truly the case that "a lot of people" will turn to piracy after having paid legitimately before or are you talking about "a lot of people" vicariously to make your narrative sound convincing?

It's a rip off because there is no information beforehand that the membership only includes streaming and that you have to pay extra to be able to download. That's a nice little surprise you become aware of once you've already paid for the membership.

^ so you're saying Netflix promotes piracy, too, because you can only stream? Apparently, the sites are migrating to a streaming-preferred model, hoping that in a few years this is a given and nobody even thinks that you can also download to own a file forever (without having to renew the subscription).

Whether you like that model or not is a different thing.

Netflix says very clear it's a streaming only site beforehand , furthermore you get a FREE full membership month with no limitations whatsoever about the content you may watch .

You have said multiple times that nowhere on the site are you told that you can download with a basic membership and then you get upset that you can't download with a basic membership?

This is not a rip off. This is you making a wild assumption that what you want will be included and then being upset when you find that it's not.

This is like paying to go to the top of the Empire State Building and complaining afterward that the ticket didn't include a trip to the top of the Eiffel Tower.

Admittedly, this is a bit off topic, but not entirely.

I have no issue with sites having a tiered membership structure that requires members to pay a bit more to get downloads. The average porn buyer is probably okay with streaming but there are those of us who are more collectors and downloading is important.

If sites are trying to protect their interests I think charging more for downloads is fine especially since the alternative is streaming-only with no download option available at all for any price.

What bugs me is some of the shady billing practices that many sites use. Pre-checked cross-sells is a particular pet peeve of mine. After two decades of buying porn memberships I'm usually pretty savvy about avoiding scams but occasionally I get burned. Last week I joined a site and there was a camouflaged drop-down menu in a banner at the top of the page that I didn't see so I got signed up for a site I didn't want.

Likewise with cancelling. Billers like CC Bill and Epoch are probably more expensive than some other billers but they're also the gold standard. I'll just not join a site if the biller looks sketchy. It bugs me that there are still some sites and billers that require you to contact them to cancel a membership. It's 2020, FFS. I should be able to do that online.

I guess my bottom line point is that with piracy as rampant as it is you'd think that sites would warmly welcome paying members and avoid shady practices.

^I agree with you that most people will be okay with a different levels of membership but only if it is obvious prior to joining and that the difference between the levels isn't staggeringly high. As an example. Adult time charges 15$ for streaming only and 25$ for downloads. To me the 25$ can be justified (see below why it may not) but the 15$ is way too much for streaming only. Now granted that may be a marketing decision on their part where they have made the streaming only option as high as that to basically force most people to pick the higher cost but the problem is that I think most porn fans aren't streaming only people. They want to be able to download their videos if for no other reason than they may not want to log in to a site to stream a video if they can simply access it from the hard drive.

I also think that most fans hate it when they leave a site that they may have been with for months and because they didn't pick the download option than they can no longer watch a video they really liked because it's not on their HD.

**The reason why I wrote above that 25$ for Adult Time may not be worth it is that AT is at this moment primarily 3 sites: Girlsway, Pure Taboo and 21Sextury. They are other sites that add the odd video but the 3 listed ones are the ones that offer the bulk of all new content. I love lesbian porn but too often feel that what GW puts out is subpar g/g porn. Pure Taboo tends to always put out amazing stuff so no complain there and finally 21Sextury. Sadly the days when they put out great Euro porn is behind them so thast today you get a significantly less impressive content from them and if you aren't a fan of Euro porn as a rule than that basically means that a third of all new content on At will not appeal to you.**

The area I agree with the OP on is the issue of not disclosing how the tiers work *before* a person purchases the membership. The Netflix example doesn't really work because it's been a streaming platform from day one. Most of these legacy sites (Naughty America, Brazzers, etc etc) operated from the stance of a set monthly rate for all-access downloads & streaming. If they're going to change their offering structure that's fine, but they should at least being more transparent as to the fact that their pricing structure has changed.

On a separate note, I noticed a couple comments questioning the value of Adulttime (I was fortunate that my Adulttime membership was grandfathered-in because I had originally been a Girlsway member.) However, I think they can make a pretty strong argument for two-tiered access. They've acquired 200+ sites with attached libraries, and many of their purchased studios (like Burning Angel) are still churning out weekly content. Factoring in the combination of an enormous library & regular updates across multiple different genre sites, I actually think $25/ per month for streaming+download is quite a bargain.

**One other recommendation I'd make is look into purchasing a yearly subscription if possible. Your upfront cost may be a bit steep, but if you can take the initial hit it will end up being about a $7-10 per month cost (depending upon the site of course).

^You are correct that AT's 25$ cost for full download is not all that expensive for what you are getting but, and this is key here, only if you happen to be a fairly new member of AT because if you are someone like me who has been a member of Fame Digital multiple times in the past then most of their videos you already have. Ultimately AT is basically GW, PT, FD and 21 Sextury with the first two and last one being the ones that still update regularly with new content.

You can usually get an even better deal to Adulttime. They are constantly running specials that include downloads & streaming for $9.95 a month. I'm pretty sure that iDealgasm has some specials almost every day.

Personally, my desire to pay for porn with gift cards instead of credit cards and the new policies of certain networks means that I won't be joining these sites/networks. For example, Naughty America & Reality Kings allow me to join and stream scenes with a gift card but doesn't allow for downloading. I'm guessing it's the same with Brazzers and the other Mindgeek sites. I think the policy sucks but I'm not going to illegally download scenes because of it. I want to make sure that my favorite performers are shooting and illegal downloads don't create the opportunity for more scenes.

If you join one of the Brazzers network sites using the giftcard payment option (increasingly popular payment method) there is zero mention of various membership tiers available - you get screamingly only, with seemingly have no option to upgrade to the download tier when using the giftcard option

I was a member of Sweetheartvideo about 6 months ago. Then rejoined after the mindgeek switchover...no more downloads, no more photosets for the older scenes, and nasty bitrate drop on the videos. Very disappointing...

Same thing happened to me with realitykings, no mention of the membership being stream-only anywhere when you sign up nor their terms& conditions. Downloads are advertised. It's a scam and they're begging for a class action lawsuit.
Playboytv, another mindgeek/brazzers website, you sign up with your cc details, you get an error page. You try logging in with the credentials given. Nothing works. You email their website support. Nothing. You assume the signup didn't take and move on. Months later there are small monthly charges on your account you don't recognize, turns they did in fact charge you, just gave you nothing in return. Want to cancel it and get your money back? No automated way of doing it, can't even do it by email (and the email they respond from can only be found through google hoops). They expect someone on the other side of the planet, on a completely different time zone, and a completely different language to call their phone line in Los Angeles to have a voice chat in english with an operator in order to cancel it.

Feels like mindgeek considers its customers to be suckers for paying for the content instead of pirating it and tries to take them for a ride.

Another example: gatapop.com. Another scam site that advertises videos that simply are not on the website, and if you want to cancel it directs you to a fill out a form on its website to that affect, then giving you a message that your membership will be cancelled within the next 24 hours. Months later they're still charging you and you have to jump through hoops with the payment processor : verotel, to get the rebilling cancelled, and no refund.

Verotel seems to be the payment processor favored by all these shady/scammy south american websites, avoid it as well.

Membership sites should've been streaming only. Why offer downloads for one low price. 9.99 should be the fee though.

BTW, how is the download quality at AT? I have Pornhub premium right now, which is great for streaming, but the downloads that they offer are all very low bitrate, low quality and not what I want for my collection.

^I tend to avoid downloading the huge HD files so I may not be the best person to ask but my download speeds were great when I was downloading the 540p and 720p stuff and I don't think it would have been any different if I had downloaded the HD and ultra HD videos. Take a look at the review on the link to see more info on the site and you can get a special price if you use these guys.

Really depends on the age of the content, but the newer stuff is 5mbit minimum for 1080p.
