Like gangbangcreampie. Buy 1 month for 35 or just chat for a few seconds with the bot, enter the code and buy it for 15 instead? Is that a scam? What do they gain by doing that?

The hope is that you buy a membership for the initial discounted price and then after a month you forget to cancel and then it charges you for the normal $35. Or you even willingly make the decision to pay more per month.

^ I presume that codes are the same as special discounts. If that's the case, then I agree with you fully. The hope is that some percentage of people who buy a subscription based on a special deal or sale will forget to cancel in time. That's also a big reason why most, and probably all sales like this, state that you'll be billed the sale price now and in 30 days you'll be charged the recurring (full) price.

My advice for anyone without a lot of experience in subscribing to sites is to write down all your subscription information. This includes your username and password, who the biller was, and give yourself some sort of reminder to cancel several days in advance. By cancelling in advance, you give yourself some breathing room to sort out any issues that may arise. In all my years of subscribing to hundred of sites, I have probably only ever encountered one or two sites that cut off access when I cancelled the subscription.

Don't rely on a site to send you an email with all your information. Most do, but some don't. Some say they will but don't appear to do so. I've checked Junk and other inboxes, but I can't find them. Write it down on your own.

Also, some billers are easier to cancel rather than others. Some are more reputable than others. My two favourites are CC Bill and Epoch. Both are easy to cancel. But keep in mind that most sites use billing services, and many require cancelling through the biller, so know who it is. It might be listed on your credit card statement, but it might be an unrelated name too.

Something else I've started doing to add an extra layer of protection is using a credit card linked to a specific account where I keep a low balance. In Canada, these are called a Visa Debit or a MasterCard Debit. I don't know what they are called elsewhere. Even if I have a problem cancelling, if they try to renew the subscription, there won't be enough money in the account to pay it.

Thank you both for explaining. Especially admiral and your very long response!
