I have a lot of old slides and negatives I'd like to get digitalized. Does anyone have any experience with a good slide/negative scanner that works? I already have a flatbed scanner so I could use a purpose built device if it worked well. The more I read reviews the more confused I get. Some take 2 mins to high-res scan a slide and others are said to take up to 15 mins/slide. I do not have that much time to waste.

I have a Nikon Super Coolscan 4000, which is several years old. It makes a 60 MB scan from a 35mm. Two minutes sounds about right for each scan, but the more functions you ask for on any particular scan will add to the time. Usually, the only thing I add is the Digital ICE function, which is good for covering up minute scratches, dirt and blemishes. Less cleanup after the scan. The resultant file will render a print that's optimal at 16x20, and can easily go to 3 hex 40 on a good digital printer or inkjet. I once made a magnification test at 8 feet and it held together very well. No stairstepping or pixilating. Aside from just resolution, dynamic range of the file is of the utmost importance, and some scanners will list their range while others just tell you what Dmax it's capable of capturing. Over 4.0 is very good. Mine is 4.2 and I've seen other scanners list their Dmax at 4.8. I haven't kept up with the newer equipment available, and I think that as less film cameras are made and bought, the need for them is diminishing, but the best prosumer scanners when I was shopping around were from Nikon, Minolta, and Canon.

I have a Nikon Coolscan V. I'd say definitely get a Nikon they are expensive but well worth it!
