Hmmm. Nice try on the part of the folks who wrote this, but jeez, don't they have a fact checker and/or proof reader?? Most glaringly, in a list that includes Ron Jeremy, "These women have been successful academically as well as financially..." At least they're correcting things as they go along when prompted by baffled commenters.

Wow, I never knew a lot of that stuff. That stuff about Shy Love having master's degrees in accounting and taxation. She could go be an accountant right now! Why did she ever get into porn if she had that discipline and intelligence and head for numbers Even more mind boggling, she did not just flirt with porn, she got all the way into it I can never watch her scenes the same way again. It makes her sexier actually, knowing she has a whole different side to her [Link]

Ha ha, I googled for a Shy Love interview and found this Xcitement link She talks about her past. It turns out she WAS an accountant! She also used to have braces and wear glasses While she was working there she got a boob job and had the braces removed and started wearing contacts. She must have been dressing really inappropriately because her appearance became a big issue with her employer They were so irritated they asked her to resign
FYI pornstar Diamond Kitty is Shy Love's real-life sister. They have different mothers but the same father. Shy is also her agent. Diamond talks about it in interview here: Diamond Kitty- Exclusive Interview
Good to see Nina Hartley on that list--I would have been most disappointed in the list maker if she had not been included. She displays her smarts to great effect in this NOW meeting in 2008. I note that there was only one male star on there (Ron Jeremy)--surely there are other smart men in porn? I would think that Peter North has something going in the brains department if he can afford to keep and maintain a Ferrari. And then there's Jack Lawrence--I believe he graduated college, and was a soldier, cop and firefighter. Talk about an All-American hero. _________________________________________________________________________________
"There can never be too many beautiful women Hypnotized for our pleasure."
^ I thought the same thing. To me it just meant they thought "We should put a dude in here," and they just threw in Ron Jeremy. I was surprised there was even one male entry. Of course, it had to be Ron.
I was thinking Scott Nails on the guys' side. It's really not how many degrees someone has. If you read Kayden Kross's writing or happen upon her poetry, she's clearly very talented and bright. Isabel Pacino also struck me as really bright. I think she used it to pay off her student loans then quietly disappeared (another sign of intelligence). Samantha Ryan is another woman who's quietly very intelligent. Not sure about her taste in guys though :{
was going to mention asia carrera but then read the list good to see her on there, read about her years ago and was very impressed as stated above, i find stars who are intelligent infinitely more attractive always had a massive thing for shy love, now times that by 100! juli ashton, like ron jeremy, was a teacher before sending some pics into playboy then doing porn XXXena i believe was an accountant or lawyer...cant remember which one,
I'm not sure how accurate it is to measure intelligence by degrees though. And it feels like an article like this is based on the general notion that dumb girls get into porn because they're dumb and easily manipulated and of course deserve their horrible faith etc. 'Wow, really? SMART people, doing porn! No way, man, why would anyone intelligent agree to be abused by nasty pornographers?!'
I've read and heard these stories on an off for years. How many advanced degrees a girl has, the notorious high-IQ associations to which they beling, their former occupations, etc. As much as some of them stistically have to be true I feel that some are a bit overblown. In another thread I recently observed that I recently watched the 2011 AVN awards. If you want to observed the level of intellegence, or to be more corect, the lack thereof, watch that. Wow! What a lack of brains were displayed by some of these girls! Unbelivable! On another similar note, take a look at their ages. A lot of these up-and-coming girls proclaim that they are barely out of high school but within a few years we'll be hearing how they all were adjuncy college professors before they went into porn. Who knows??

Samantha Ryan has always struck me as having some real smarts. I know she attended the U of Kansas but not sure if she got her degree. Samantha created quite an uproar in March of 2010 when she scored floor seats at a basketball game aqainst KSU.
That's an odd list. I don't get why Jenna Jameson and Sasha Grey are on the list. I'm not saying they aren't smart but it seems like the list is focusing on people with degrees. I know Sasha's thing was to imply she's smarter than most porn girls but that was mostly based on the fact that she read certain books. I totally agree with every who points out degrees don't mean you're automatically smarter. There are plenty of smart girls in porn. If a girl has a degree and can't benefit from it and make it work for them the degree is meaningless.
Or measure much of anything by degrees except maybe perseverance. I have always felt that I am prime evidence for the proposition that having degrees is not the same as being educated. And I am far from being alone.

^Not that old argument again. "yeah, yeah, I'm so smart I don't have to go to school." One of the few people that can actually claim that they were wasting their time by going to Harvard was Bill Gates. The only people who argue that a Degree isn't a measure of intelligence are the ones that don't have a degree. I notice that one doesn't see too many uneducated Doctors. Careena Collins is also a Lawyer, supposedly in the Adult business.
I've been told motivation is the key factor. Which I always lacked. Victoria White says, I think it's in Mike Adriano's California Anal Girls, something like "I'm not really a school person because I think about dirty dirty things all day". And really it's weird that we're supposed to be able to supress our sexuality at a time in our lives where NOTHING is more important, or should be. Some of the best directors/performers seem to have been distracted by porn and eventually getting in the business. It's like this certain breed of non-conformists unfit for the greater capitalist system.
Well, if we're counting, I have three degrees and don't consider my intellect to be in any way remarkable. And I certainly went to college with a lot of slugs. Yes, it takes something a little brighter than a doorknob to graduate, but great smarts aren't always essential. A lot of very bright people graduate. So do a lot of very ordinary folks. You just don't want those to be your physician or attorney. (Edited for a typo. College did teach me to care about little things like that.) Edited by - alphadachs on 5/1/2011 1:58:51 AM

I think people on this thread are undervaluing degrees. Degrees are a measure of education. They are a qualification. They are evidence of dedicated study. Acquisition of knowledge. For those saying it only takes perseverance to earn a degree... Perseverance is a very important quality and it is not easy to come by. It has to be cultivated. Earning a high-end degree shows you have cultivated it. Hard work, discipline, time management, organization. In my opinion that stuff is just as valuable as being "smart" I use again the example of Shy Love... Intelligence is defined as the ability to acquire knowledge and skills. She could not have earned master's degrees in accounting and taxation without having that ability. Her qualifications show she has a head for numbers. Detail, accuracy, understanding complicated finances, memorizing and applying protocol and policy.

Put it this way: Who would you want designing your bridge, an engineer with a degree or a guy who says he is a self-taught engineer? Who would you want operating on you, a surgeon with a degree or a guy who says he taught himself surgery?

I like to see jenna jameson always. But about credibility of this list i cant say anything like others.
+1 Also the way speaks in interviews. There's a BTS clip on her site when she's doing homework for accounting and the guy behind the camera gets her to show a boob, it's not porn but it's amusing.
I think the difference here is that the degress that you are describing are technical degrees. In academia an MD is a "Skill" degree as opposed to a PhD. which is a research degree. MIT gives out both PhD's as well as ScD. One is for research and knowledge and the other is for demonstrated proficiency in a specific skill. A civil engineer who does not have the requsite degree, or more importantly the requsite state licensure, would not be a good choice to design a bridge, or at least one upon most of us would wish to drive. On the other hand a person with a degree in musicology or art history need not know how to paint or play or sing but they have documentation of a prescribed educational curriculum. Which one is "Smater"? Who knows? Maybe a lot of what we are able to learn is more about aptitude and not intellegence???
What some people don't understand or quite get is that knowledge and intelligence are two seperate things. Yes, in the best case senario "smart" people will have both but that's not always the case. College is mostly about knowledge. Actual intelligence is apparent way before college. A person probably wouldn't do better on an IQ test after college than before. That's why it's possible to measure a child's intelligence at an early age before they have much schooling. A person could conceivably do well in college if they had a good memory and were a good test taker.
I would take an intelligent performer over anyone who just has a degree. I have meant many people who have degrees and many who dont. Some are very intelligent and some just have a piece of paper but no intelligence. I think it would be very hot for a performer who has intelligence, persues higher education in whatever field she wants and can hold a conversation with most about anything. I worked at a gentlemans club for a few years and there were a few girls there who had intelligence which amazed me. You would never knew the worke3d there outside the club. That was very attractive. I remember two of the girls I used to hang out with both just finished their law degrees. I thought that was awesome. Then there are the rest who just do nothing else but their job. I have nothing against those people but I doing find it gratifying that a star or performer is able to do her job and advance their knowledge.
I have a degree and I don't consider it to be much of a measure of intelligence. I've met too many complete and utter idiots with degrees for that. Maybe if you're talking about a PhD, where (at least in theory) you need to demonstrate originality and critical thinking, but it doesn't take much actual intelligence to work through a bachelor's degree. In the UK around 30% of adults have one, so they aren't really much of a status symbol these days. To me even something like a sense of humour is a more accurate measure of someone's intelligence than whether they sat through a few years of college.
^^^^^^ Agreed! degrees arent a sign of intelligence, they are a piece of paper showing you stuck 4 years out at uni and remembered a certain % of info you had to. Creative thinking, coming up with new ideas whether it be business or otherwise takes more skill. For example, for all i know Jenna Jameson could of left school at 12 but the way she mad millions from porn was ingenius. No one had done it before her. Another example, tho non porn related, was our ( australia) former prime minister Paul Keating..he left school at 15 to be a band manager, went on to be finance minister then prime minister. He is as good with economics as anyone with a degree and it took it further than 99.9% of people who spent years at uni. Saying a degree is a sign of intelligence is a way of justifying your hefty college fee's.

Actually read The Mismeasure of Man by Stephen Jay Gould, IQ tests don't do what you're claiming here, which is measure some notion of 'innate' intelligence. I do agree there is some difference between intelligence and knowledge though.

First off, you're completely off base when you say Degrees aren't a sign of intelligence. Idiots don't get into college or earn a degree. Case in point and this will be a perfect example. It's decided that you need sugery and two Drs. are standing in front of you. One went to Harvard and the other went to Joe's Institute of Brain Surgery and Tire Care. Who are you going to pick? Case closed. Secondly, it's been documented here on this site that Jenna wasn't the brains of the operation and that in fact it was her now ex-hubby Jay Grdina. Jenna was only the face in front of the brains. As far as Australia's Prime Minister is concerned; it's Australia, and secondly, there are exceptions to every rule, but it's just that, and exception and not the norm.

Mika Tan is pretty smart woman. Interview with Mika Tan Edited by - bellend on 5/1/2011 11:11:02 PM
Posters have covered a wide range of variants on this theme. For clarity (just for my own piece of mind), I would like to go back to my original comparison, before it was hijacked into a slightly perturbed form: I compared having a degree not to intelligience but to the rather nebulous notion of "being educated." My own paperwork consists of a BS Physics and BA, MA Mathematics -- not schlock degrees in terms of technical requirements. However, I do not consider myself to be very educated. I am extremely shallow and limited in so many ways; if you had a real-time discussion with me, I assure you that you would be singularly unimpressed. There are many interconnected factors floating around here: intelligence (for which one articulate poster gave a possible definition, though I would quibble there is a huge range of definitions and very little agreement on any of them), education, possession of a degree, perseverance, general savvy, and many other qualities all important in establishing one's intellectual standing or credibility. No one of them alone is sufficient to qualify one as "smartest pornstar" (or whatever), all contributory. I won't belittle someone without a degree nor necessarily respect one with a degree (absent any other grounds for admiration). I also don't want anyone to feel I was dissing them for their degrees. I simply exhibited myself as evidence that a degree doesn't confer any special significance.
I rest my case. In the hypothetical instance you cite, both persons are college graduates. Their quality is hardly comparable, but according to your argument, the second one -- by virtue of his degree -- must be intelligent. Yet, you give him no vote of confidence. By the way, since both are identified as Drs, I assume Joe's Tire Care is accredited. Edited by - alphadachs on 5/2/2011 2:11:56 AM Edited by - alphadachs on 5/2/2011 2:36:50 AM
By the way, one last note before I stop flogging an expired equine. On the subject of having to be intelligent to get into college: in the state of California, ANY living person aged 18 or older gets admitted into the community college system. From there, so long as you complete the general lower division curriculum with a certain mimimum GPA, you WILL be accepted for transfer to a state college (or, at any rate, we used to have that reciprocal agreement with local unis). Perhaps I should note where I am coming from in this discussion. I taught at college for 25 years. I loved my students, but some of them (even many who were making their way through the system) weren't the highest watt bulbs; this in no way diminished by respect and admiration for them. They were there striving for a degree, and I was honored to try to help their efforts. Edited by - alphadachs on 5/2/2011 2:13:01 PM
This story is kind of sad. I mean, did people really think porn stars were all dumb? I started after I finished my BA. I know Brandon Longwood and Seam Michaels have degrees, and I've heard Axel Braun has a PhD. The fact is, porn stars are just like everyone else, except we have sex on camera from time to time and share it with the world... just my $.02

No, it's not that, it's just that the mention of a degree as used as a measure of intelligence gets downplayed as not being relevant to actual intelligence. The same person then touts a porn star as being a genius because they can walk and chew gum at the same time.

I think maybe something else is also at work here: A lot of male porn viewers do not like the idea of the performers being smarter, more ambitious & more disciplined than them. I think there is a large portion of porn consumers who are excited by the idea that the females they are watching are degraded and desperate and lower class. The porn industry caters to this with the language on the box covers, mocking the girls and calling them "stupid whores" and so on. When these viewers are confronted by the reality that several of these performers have actually accomplished things in life, it ruins the fantasy. It bruises their ego. So they need an excuse so they can still feel superior to the people on the screen I am not trying to offend anyone in this thread, I am not trying to point fingers But I do think this attitude exists, perhaps on a subconscious level. It might sound like an old song & dance, but the truth is there really is a strong streak of misogyny in porn. It is undeniable. Just read a box cover of the White Trash Whore series for some examples

And just so no one accuses me of being a fanboy I guess I will have to say "Fuck porn bitches, they are all stupid sluts."
I agree. Katherine Frank addresses this in her participant-observational, anthropolgical study G-Strings and Sympathy: Strip Club Regulars and Male Desire in regard to stripping, and looks at it through the practice of "slumming." She basically says what you're saying -- her interviewees frequently articulated assumptions about class-status etc based around myths; assumptions that were in reality a part of their strip-club-attending fantasy. A number of these men enjoyed attending low-tier clubs for this reason. Part of Frank's analysis touched on the "white knight" attitude -- some of the men wanted to see the women as in need of their help. Interesting stuff.
Brandon Iron strikes me as very intelligent. He's very unusual compared to most porn directors. Ron Jeremy is a little hard to swallow, I'd rather see some sort of standardized test, IQ, SAT, ACT scores or something.
I've got it! The smartest woman in porn was the girl who went to court and had her name removed from IAFD and just about everywhere else. It was something Kitty Kat or Kitty Lixx or something like that.
Hey, don't you go badmouthing degrees, I spent 8 years of my life getting letters after my name (and now possibly another 4 for yet another letter combo) I would like to delude myself that they weren't entirely wasted. A bit like my 25+ years of porn addiction :) The OP list is predictably Americano-centric. Where's Oksana D'Harcourt or the wonderful articulate Ovidie for example? Or the zillion Eastern European goddesses who took it up every imaginable orifice to pay for college? It was good to see Bridgette Monet mentioned above BTW. Imperator
