In the late 1970s, the powers-that-be paired Emmanuelle and The Story of O as a double feature also Emmanuelle and Emmanuelle-Joys of a Woman, the sequel. Years later, sitting across the aisle from Roger Ebert, Gene Siskel praised the erotic airline scene in the original Emmanuelle. Meanwhile, Ebert had worked on a few of Russ Meyer's films; he co-wrote Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, and maybe Beneath the Valley of the Ultra Vixens, which is toally nuts. These are the types of movies that are considered soft core plus I guess you can lump in those major films that recieved NC-17 ratings, something like Henry and June, many others. I recently saw a French film called Exterminating Angels that would also fit this particular niche---T0M

THE IMAGE is the greatest softcore film ever made, imo. (Some may call it borderline hardcore though)
Sarno's Butterflies and Abigal Leslie is Back in Town are pretty great too. Franco's Eugenie...the Story of Her Journey into Perversion, Cries of Pleasure and Shining Sex. Meyer's Lorna, Mudhoney, Vixen. All excellent softcore imo.

Well I finally saw it. I guess I should stick to modern hardcore because I thought it was really dated and stupid. The dubbing and sound effects were so bad it reminded me of a 1970s kung fu movie. The sex scenes were terribly edited to the point of being abstract. If this is the prime example of softcore...I guess I am glad I missed it.

I had heard that Butteflies had the actors actually having sex but was shot essentially softcore by not showing any penetration, or is there actual softcore and hardcore versions? I've only seen a softcore version.
