Is anyone here familiar with either of the applications?: SolidWorks, CATIA, Pro/Engineer, Autodesk Inventor

I haven't used SolidWorks in almost 10 years but found it incredibly easy to use. I'm find it amazing how much can be done on a PC these days. 20 years ago it would have taken a supercomputer to do the kinds of tasks SolidWorks can perform on a PC or notebook computer today. BTW, all of the design work on my friend's custom race car was done in SolidWorks.

Solidworks is definitely the most user-friendly and their licenses are relatively cheap (I think). The GUI looks like any other Windows application so it's easy to get use to the menus, unlike a lot of the other Unixy 3D Cad packages. Although CATIA and Pro/E are more widely used in industry (aero and auto). I used Solidworks for a design project in college, and it was a breeze to learn. If you are a college student, you could probably get a good deal on licenses as well.

Do I need to know how to use math in order to use SolidWorks? I never got past sequencial 2 in high school and I nvere took any algebra or geometry classes either.

It kinda depends on what you're looking to design. It does most of the math for you but you do need to understand what it's doing on your behalf.

It gets easy quickly, butt I have nothing to compare it with.
As for maths, I never had to do anything remotely mathematical until I tried to use the ProMechanica parts of the package, where you can do all these stress and strain animations and all that jazz.

I had my fun and that's all that matters.
