Drew Black broken crankshaft 8009 Posts 9/99	Posted - Apr 1 2005 : 1:57PM I was just looking at the daily stats for our spam filter package and can't believe how much spam we're getting. Yesterday's stats: 92939 emails received 92458 were spam 87004 were to non-existant email addresses 4371 were from forged senders I hope one of the newer anti-spam sender verification schemes start to take off and become a standard. We're just a small outfit. I can't imagine how much large companies spend each year dealing with this shit. [Link]

VirginSurgeon Member LA, CA 23 Posts 3/05	Posted - Apr 1 2005 : 2:23PM This is why I am a big fan of SPEWS, http://www.spews.org/ simply put, its a list of spammers, ip ranges and the ISP's that provide for them. ISP gives spammer ip- Spammer spams - People upload spam with headers to spam newsgroup - news.admin.net-abuse.blocklisting SPEWS updates. If ISP continues to host spammer, more and more blocks of their address's are added to SPEWS. The key here is to hit the ISP that are allowing spammers to use their resources to harass us. It's funny to read the admins emails to spews asking to be removed because half of their email clients cant sent mail to certain domains, SPEWS people hit back with, "when you get rid of these spammers" then we will talk! Down side is yes, people who join an ISP who is blocked will not be able to send mail to certain people, TOO BAD deal with it, or stop putting money in the pockets of ISP's who host spammers!! [Link]

Drew Black broken crankshaft 8009 Posts 9/99	Posted - Apr 1 2005 : 2:37PM Sender Policy Framework. The 4371 determined to be forged are for domains that have SPF DNS records. If a domain doesn't use SPF then the spam filter doesn't do this check. (It can be configured to take various actions though based on SPF.) [Link]

The Wanderer All-Star Member 192 Posts 6/00	Posted - Apr 1 2005 : 9:18PM My AOL account used to be inundated with spam, I mean absolutely swamped with the stuff. I continued to report this crap to AOL by forwarding the original e-mails to them over a long period of time, without any noticeable reduction in volume. Eventually I admitted defeat and pretty much abandoned several of my e-mail addresses. Then, almost overnight, the spam slowed to a trickle, and continued to decrease over several months until it became almost non-existent. The few spam messages I do receive are mostly caught by my spam trap and genuine messages get through without a problem. The latest version of AOL's e-mail client has a 'Report Spam' button. No idea if it does anything useful, but I click on it anyway for the odd strays that evade capture. I'm not sure if AOL deserve credit for this dramatic change of events, or perhaps something went wrong at Spam Central and my e-mail addresses disappeared from their lists? Whatever the reason it appears that spam is a thing of the past, for me at least. [Link]

Now it's less than 100 a day and 90% of them are automatically routed to the junk email folder. [Link]

Click to expand Try having the webmaster account for a pornsite, for some reason spammers seem to think we want to buy porn from them in stead of selling it... My main personal account I have had for over 10 years and it is just jacco@ and I refuse to give up such a nice address because of those spamming assholes. All that advice about not giving anybody your email is nice for newbies, but I started out on the net when using your real email address on usenet or websites was normal and there was no spam. So now my address is probably on every spamlist around, but I won't give in. I have a chain of different spamfilters on all my addresses and so far this year 77 spams managed to get through (less than 1 a day) and many, many thousands have been blocked. I stopped keeping exact stats when spam became more than 90% of my mail some time ago. (I do have some 20 addresses I regularly use, but eventually almost all of them end up on my homecomputer, through various routes) For addresses to use for website registration I strongly advise Spamgourmet, the best way to get disposable addresses without hassle. I used Mailwasher in the past to filter my e-mail and to block adresses but the spam was too much for Mailwasher to handle, meaning it took to much time to work with it to handle all the spam. [Link]

There's a lot of stuff out there that seems to corroborate the claims in the book (it is fiction after all) that the NSA is capable of snooping all email transmissions in the US and most of them around the world looking for word partterns. This makes me wonder if the increase in spam isn't just because more people are trying to sell snake oil via email. I wonder if the drastic increase in email volume is an effort to make it more difficult for governments to snoop on its citizens? I know, consipracy theories, etc. [Link]

That would explain why my spam numbers have dropped off drastically recently. I normally get at least 200 a day, and I think recently it dropped to under 50. Click to expand On the other hand, the comforting thing about this is, it's the federal government doing the snooping. I have no faith in the government to patch a pothole much less to read every email that gets tossed around. When they sign a big contract with Microsoft or Sun Microsystems or Google to monitor email then I might get worried. What was the system that just leaked out as a failure? Carnivore or something like that. I'd love to see the list of keywords they programmed - car-bomb, bureau, allah, max hardcore, muslim, incendiary, agency, brandon irons, police, jihad, osama, wankus, iraq, saddam, ayatollah. The list, I'm sure, goes on and on. [Link]

I know, consipracy theories, etc. Click to expand So what you're saying is that we should be grateful for spam because it may help us protect our privacy? - - - I used to receive an ever-increasing amount of spam in my Hotmail box, but now most of it is automatically filtered and placed in the junk mail folder. There's also a built in function that allows the user to report junk mail to MSN/Microsoft, but they do afterwards - if anything at all - I don't know. Click to expand The last time I checked my Adult DVD Talk address, it was full of spam messages with titles like 'Your Viagra Prescription Is Waiting For You Astroknight' and 'You Need This Astroknight'. Which is strange, considering the fact that my name isn't AstroKnight!! Maybe they sent all your spam to me by mistake? You'd think the spammers would at least make the effort to get my name right!
