There are so many opportunities in both gonzo and features to have an interplay between the performers and the spectators. A good example of what I'm talking about would be if there were a teacher/student scene in a classroom where there are students who don't take part in the action, but either have a dialogue with each other or the people who are fucking. Like you said, it could have been done on purpose as it wasn't edited out. Butt then again, it seems to me that producers put less and less effort into porn these days, so it doesn't surprise me if the camera guy was an amateur and they were too lazy to edit it out.
