Howard Stern had Bridgette Kerkove and some other chick director on his show today. Before the show Stern and his crew had watched Bridgette's new hardcore gonzo movie. And all the guys on Howard's show, guys in the 30-49 age range, did NOT like what they saw - in short all agreed the movies were too nasty, too mechanical and too 'gay' - gay is too many dicks in close proximity to each other and too much focus on dicks in general. It always makes me raise a Spockian eyebrow when I read this board and RAME, lotta guys payin A LOT of attention to the males in porn, really interested in the physical appearance of the male talent, the size of his penis and volume and appearance of his load. All I care about is if the female in the scene appears to be turned on by the guy.
The porn biz really is turning off alot of normal guys who just want to see hot beautiful women enjoying sex.
Some of you producers should listen, way too much pandering to the raincoat crowd going on. It's a proven fact that for many people porn is like crack, the more porn you watch the more tolerant you become and need more extreme acts to get off. That's where the gonzo scene is at now.
Some studio should step back from the abyss and start shooting nothing but a hybrid type of scene which is part gonzo and part feature. No plot, no dialogue, just a hot chick and ONE guy going at it with some heat.
Bridgette kept repeating 'we just do what the fans are demanding' - the fans, and she means raincoaters, are NOT the majority of your audience. It seems that way because it's raincoaters who post on sites like this, it's raincoaters who show up to your store and stripclub appearances and make themselves known to you.
No doubt there is a hardcore audience that can no longer get off unless there's double anal, Ass to Mouth, spitting, and all that other stuff that is now de rigueur for gonzo porn entertainment but you are all neglecting a large segment of guys like Howard and his crew.
It's also probably true that Stern and his crew are now middle aged guys, they were brought up on a kinder gentler porn. So maybe guys under 30 need this kind of extreme gonzo in the same way extreme sports are very popular with under 30's and completely ignored by those older.
How about a pretty girl gonzo series called 'Just The Two Of Us' - let me see Bridgette and ONE good stud alone, let them do what they'd do if they hooked up at a bar or a blind date.
Not saying there isn't a market for what's going on in gonzo today, i know how successful some of the gonzo companies are but my point is that most of you behind the front lines of porn have forgotten about what I think is a larger market of porn consumers - somewhere between feature style sex and esthetics and what constitutes gonzo today.
The MMF scenes, I just don't get it. Maybe Stern is right and there is something gay about it. Who here sits and fantasizes about the hot chick from work or school 'Damn, i'd give anything to be with her.........and my buddy Dave at the same time'. Way too many of those scenes I think. NOW 2 girls and one guy, now THAT is a fantasy most guys have.
Hardcore raincoaters at one extreme, John Ashcroft on the other, and the silent majority of folks who just like sex left with nothing. If you go back and look at early gonzo you see something amazing; a true understanding of what makes sex hot. No lame plot, no cheesy sets; just hot hard humping. Maybe the camera work and editing were a little rough. But there's no denying the genuine heat and enthusiasm.
Isn't that what most people want from sex? Genuine and enthusiastic participation from their partner. That's what I want from sex, and that's what I want in my porn.
Amen! If they want to go ATM or man-rimming or whatever fine. But let's see it play out like two people who are actually doing what they want to do. I'll even take fake boobs if you'll spare me the fake enthusiasm.

First of all, a small sample of Howard Stern fans may not be representative of the taste of other porn fans. A non-random focus group provides worthless information contrari to the dictates of marketing gurus.
When a bunch of guys (a group) watch something, and a powerful leader (probably Howard Stern himself) tells the others what is good and not good, the leader will guide the outward decisions made by the group (groupthink). So I would take any comments made about preferences with a grain of salt. Probably, the comments reflects Howard's taste.
Third, the fans that count the most are the ones who buy lots of dvds and videos. A casual porn fan who rents 1 video a month and buys 1 dvd a year will have 1/360 the vote of a fan who buys 30 videos/dvds a month. This is just weighted voting -- voting with your money. The guys who post to this board and RAME spend money on the hard stuff and so producers rush to supply the demand. Casual porn fans may prefer softer gentler porn, but unless they spend real money buying a lot of softer gentler porn, such fans do not matter.
I do agree that many people like the softer stuff and there are many studios that cater to their needs. If more fans buy such releases, the supply will go up and we will see increases in the production of softer stuff. What drives the industry is the sales figure and because the harder stuff sells well, producers will rush to produce the harder stuff.
The HUGE success of cable porn is evidence enough that a market for easily accessable porn. People don't watch cable porn because it's softer , they watch it because it less embarrassing than going down to the local video store and renting Ass Bandits 23, or even Erotic Tails 2. In order to forgo the embarrassment, many people will forgo the hardcore content. (I know, hard to imagine anyone would be embarrassed laying a copy of Erotic Tails 2 on the counter in front friends, neighbors and strangers, but many, perhaps even most people actually feel that way.)
Cut off from the cable revenue stream, hardcore producers produce pornography for people who need their DAPs so badly they'll suffer any indignity to get it. Meanwhile, Mr and/or Ms. John Q. Public, who'd just like to get turned on by seeing some nice fucking without being beaten about the head and shoulders by hokey plots and cheesy acting (take those away and there's nothing left for the cable version) get nothing.
You can't vote with your money if what you want doesn't exist.

Raincoaters no doubt per capita spend WAY more on porn than the average or casual porn consumer but you over estimate your buying power and importance, it is dwarfed by the 90%(not sure what the exact number is) of porn consumers who would be classified as casual porn viewers.
I've never run an adult video store but I have run and worked for adult Internet sites. There are raincoater porn surfers, they join multiple paysites, as many as 10 concurrent memberships every month. They also spend alot of time inside the paysite downloading and viewing. But the truth is that the vast majority of adult paysite customers log in to a paysite a FEW times a month, that's it.
I'm sure AVN hasnt done anything on this but if they wanted to be a relevant industry publication of record they'd investigate the consumer market - i guarantee you that raincoaters are a small minority of the overall market. Yet producers listen to them as if they were the most important segment of the audience.
My point isn't that extreme gonzo doesn't have a big audience, my point is that producers are too focused on that audience and are missing out on an as big or bigger audience of guys whose tastes fall somewhere in between feature esthetics and extreme gonzo. I have seen these types of videos, on the Net, so i'm not sure which studio or title they belong to.
Stern certainly speaks for me on this issue. Every company should offer a wide range of products but none should be so focused on "freak show" porn that they exclude the rest of us that just want to see a hot chick getting it on with a guy that delivers the goods.
Wow... fun thread. It's been a while since I got to really tell people how I feel about a controversial topic. So without further adieu, here goes.I've listened to Stern, and like RonK said, I certainly don't consider Stern's cronies nor his fans to be indicative of any real demographic group, with the possible exception of Stern fans.I'm very happy that you have determined what you care about. Personally, I don't like DAP and DPP cause it gives me the heebie jeebies that guys are rubbing their dicks together. I do however care very much about the guys load when he comes in her mouth (2 drops ain't enough folks). So I too have determined what I care about. Does it make me gay that I care how big his load is? I think not. If that is the criterion, then someone is seriously off base about determination of sexual bent. In short, do not presume to tell me (or anyone else) what the correct method of determining what matters and what doesn't is!See above and then please tell me... what the fuck is a "normal guy"? You've got to be kidding! It's a matter of dollars and cents. If there is truly "way too much", then the glut will drive down demand. Otherwise, you are the one that is way off base. And seeing that more extreme gonzo is being produced daily, I'd say there must be a pretty good market.Proven, huh? First off, I personally agree with you. But... I've never seen it proven. Cite your references or banish that phrase from your lexicon. Why? Because you think it's the right thing to do? There are already some studios filling this niche. Look at Brad Armstrong's work with Wicked. He has done a number of these flix. They fulfill a need... a niche... but they are not selling like hot cakes. Does that tell you something? Personally, I think it does. I think it says that the demand for this type of porn is nowhere near as intense as you'd have us believe. This is a ludicrous statement. If Bridgette is targetting the raincoat crowd, then by default they represent the majority of HER audience. Christ... learn a little about marketing before you decide to go on your next rant!Great... sounds like a viable market to me. What exactly is the problem with identifying and targetting raincoaters? Is it just because you don't happen to be one??? Hmmm... if we're not like you then we are wrong. I get it.If you are certain of that, then do yourself a favor and put your money where your mouth is. Take your retirement fund and invest it in a new porn company that targets this hugely unserviced niche market. That way you can do porn fans a favor and get rich at the same time. Or... maybe you are just spouting off on a subject that you have spent almost no effort researching and you don't truly have a clue of just what size this market group represents. I wonder...Kinder, gentler porn... cute. I'm way past thirty. Do I count? How Goddamn patronizing of you to categorize guys my age based on your own precepts. Who do you think you are?You like it? You produce it. If it sells, great. If not, tough titty. But if you don't have the guts to back it, don't preach like it's gospel. At last, a sensible statement. The operative term is I think. Here we go again. You are sensible when you say that you don't get it. Fine... you don't get it. But when you say that most guys have or don't have a fantasy, you are way out of line. Keep the opinions based on yourself, or go out on a limb and invest and see if you are right. But get off your pulpit already. You have absolutely NO right to speak for me or anyone else!
I'm not sure the less-extreme market is being ignored, it's just easier to get into the market at the edge. You don't create buzz by doing what's already been done, after all.
The porn industry follows the money pure and simple. This shit is tracked and everyone (including fans) keeps up with what sells each month. When gonzo started steadily rising up (hehe) the charts, even companies like Vivid took notice. If couples porn sold as well as gonzo, trust me - you'd see more of it being produced.
BTW: Much of what you call gonzo was pretty common in 70s porn (which is why they call it rain coaters I guess), and it was only the conservative 80s that caused the industry to retreat backwards.
Do I think porn should have limits - absolutely. I've made my opinions about choking quite clear, and I'm no fan of gagging/puking either, but those activities still aren't common. Not even in gonzo.
As far as GBs and DPs being "gayish", I'd say it depends on how it is shot.
An example would be guys getting in line for a blower.
Girl = O Guys = C Camera = X
I hate this view:
C C C C C C C X O
In this scene you can see a whole row of cocks. No thanks.
I prefer this way:
O C C C C C C C C C X
This way the guys are lined up, but I only see one at a time.
So I think many of Stern's opinions are based on camera angles, and not the content.
I have noticed a steady stream of people looking for something in the middle.
It's not accurate to use sales as a measure of demand or of needs met. People do watch softer stuff than they'd like just because it's easily available on cable, and they do watch harder stuff than they'd like just because it's readily available.
Another problem is that although the general public does watch porn, they have no idea what porn to get. Most of your neighbors have watched porn, but they don't hang around here researching it, and even the newbies here have to ask what a dap is, or whatever. For most people, they just want to get a movie, they don't want to have an educational experience just to learn what to avoid.
With mainstream movies, they can go to rottentomatoes.com and see a hundred reviews of one movie to get a balanced picture. And movie clips and trailers will be on the Today show and on commercials.
With porn, most of them are going by hype, or going by the boxcover (a situation capitalized on by companies which produce wretched porn with good boxcovers). Most people that I know have watched porn, but many have seen one or two wretched things and drawn the conclusion that porn is just not for them. ----------------------------------------------------
Thanks for that ABC , that was a beautiful passionate post . Funny too . But you're still wrong . Now let me explain how .
How can you or anyone determine how large this possibly untapped section of the general public might be ? Mentioning research makes me imagine you're thinking of some sort of poll or focus group or some such . Is that right ? People lie about sex ( every poll supports this ) , men exaggerate , women underplay and both sexes feel uncomfortable when porn is mentioned in everyday life . Okay these are generalizations but they're generally true . Bearing in mind what great big filthy - mines 12 inches - liars we mostly are when it comes to this topic how do we ever find out what most people really want or don't want from porn ?
Someone mentioned that money talks and I walk . Well I take offense at that , I really do . Sure I've bought some DVDs that contained mild chocking , gagging and DP but that doesn't mean I actively support those acts or want to see them in my porn . In most cases it wasn't 'till the disk hit the deck that I realized what was contained therein . And don't think I haven't tried jacking to that stuff , 'cause I have . It just won't work , Mr Floppy puts in an appearance . But that's fine because , and here's the crucial part , I can jack around it . Yep , it's that simple . Enjoy the parts you like . FFW the parts you don't .
Which all means that moneywise I'm a raincoater , but dickwise I'm a lightweight . Unfortunately according to some peoples' definition here that would have me counted as a 'coater and would possibly lead the industry to include more of the stuff I don't watch and less that I do .
Oh , and the whole Wicked movies aren't exactly selling like hotcakes thing ? The sales rankings at AdultDVDEmpire would tend to disagree with you there . ( even if some of them really do stink )
Nice rebuttal. I had no problems with your post at all, because you did not try to project your personal preferences as being "indicative of normal wants, desires and behavior." I really think that's what ate me up about the original post. With that in mind...
This is a valid concern, and I do believe that there are many who would never actively submit opinions that reflect reality, for any variety of reasons (shame, pressure, lack of understanding, etc). Also very valid. I have bought MANY dvds that have 2 or 3 scenes that are whackable while the rest is trash. I haven't sold them because I appreciate the 2 or 3 scenes. But this doesn't make them a solid fit with my desires.uh huh... all of your points are valid. And they aren't just valid for porn, they are valid for virtually any product you can name. If a consumer is not truly educated on the product that they wish to buy, there is an element of randomness that is introduced into their shopping preferences. In a field as arcane as porn is for most consumers, it is no wonder to me that many just pick up a dvd based on the cover, only to be let down that this slick Vivid title (or whatever company) isn't what it looked like it was.
It is virtually impossible to overcome an uneducated consumer, so at that point one makes a guess and produces a product. If the product "clicks" with some demographic, on some level, then the rate of return will be high enough to dictate that the manufacturer should use the formula again. Does this mean a direct and perfect fit? Nope. But they did something right, didn't they.
In this thread I read of consumers and cable. I contend that in that scenario, the customer is not the end consumer, but rather the cable provider. They are selecting and paying for the programming. When the cable company selects the title, the manufacturer has made the sale. So if cable companies select your titles, you are still doing something right.
I came on pretty strong with my first retort, simply because I have a problem with someone stating that because he thinks this stuff is too strong, it must be weird, or wrong, or unacceptable, or companies should really be ignoring it and producing what he considers to be acceptable. Sorry champ... you're just as weird as the rest of us! Just your weirdness doesn't float my boat. Capiche?
Yeah, but that is because they are a niche seller in a limited market. Who is competing with Wicked in the "no plot, pretty porn" genre? Maybe Sin City? Not too much competition. Therefore, it's easy to be a big fish in a small pond. If the demand were really high, you can bet other wannabes would be jumping into the fray.
Lee, let me compliment you on a well thought out and competent rebuttal!
Second, lets look at why people have sex. There are a lot of reasons, but the biggest 2 are probably enjoyment and procreation. Obviously, porn isn't about procreation, unless you think you impregnate someone by splattering semen on their face. (Honey, we've been doing it wrong. no wonder we don't have kids), so I've always thought it should be about enjoyment.
I'd like to think that both people (or all 5, depending on your viewing tastes) could at least *potentially* be enjoying what's happening. And I'll be honest, there are some things in porn that I can't imagine that anyone could ever enjoy doing. Yes, people will do it for money, and they might not scream in agony. Yes, people that are trying to create a 'I'll do anything sexually because I'm the most sexual person in the world-so buy my movie!' will say that they're really into something that might make me cringe. And you may actually find someone that actually likes something that I just don't understand. I don't like brussel sprouts, and I don't see why anyone would eat them, but I can at least, in a shadowy recess of my brain, admit that someone, somewhere, may like them. I can't say the same thing for people that will fart semen out of their ass and drink it.
To be honest, while I understand that people like novelty, and it may not be my thing, the double-everything excrement consumption videos trouble me less than the ones that border on assult. The choking-vomiting-gagging bit. These are real people, not animatronics. Do we really need that much violence in adult cinema?
Anyway, there's a big market, I would guess, between Vivid and circus porn. It seems to be missed.
Interesting side note about gagging since it comes up a lot <insert ropy drool joke> on ADT.
There are polls which indicate that many women have fantasies about forced oral. Now, I'm not the fact-maven that some of us are, and am WAY too lazy to look it up, but I know I've seen this statistic more than once.
Some people: Gagging on cock=brussel sprouts! Other people: Gagging on cock=fuck me now!
I'm not advocating it; I'm just pointing out it's not just 'freaks' or 'hardcore raincoaters' who dig this stuff. Sometimes it's the women. You should be so lucky!
AMEN! HALLELUJAH! That's really the bottom line. (Actually, 'Straight to the A' would be but one 'bottom line'). "But" one -- yet another!
Find attractive talent with acting ability, a decent script, a non-annoying soundtrack, and ... I must be drunk again. Not yet, but I damn sure need to be.
I though that it was pretty silly of Bridgitte to go on Stern in the first place. Anyone who has listened to him for any period of time would have known exactly what his opinion on her movies would be.
He's always raved about Jenna Jameson's movies at Wicked and the Vivid movies that have been sent to him prior to appearances by their contract girls. Did anyone at Metro actually imagine that he was going to like these movies?
This is an interesting topic, I have spent 5 years selling porn as a retailer and when the raincoaters walk in I say KaChing. Unfortunately they made up a small portion of my business. Most of the people who were looking for porn were average everyday people. Features were boring and gonzo had something different. But the comps did and still do great. The high price of new release features and gonzo don't offer the return of comps and catalog films. Now I am seeing people getting turned off by gonzo purely by the lack of information on the back of the box. If a video is going to contain lots of choking and spitting it should state so on the box. I have noticed that the boxcovers are becoming so uninformative that consumers do not know what they are getting. Oh well, thats my rant.

This is one of the most interesting threads I've come across in a while. In fact, my interest in learning more about the business of porn is probably the number one reason I read and contribute to this board.
The first thing that seems obvious is that there is a real lack of effective market research in the porn industry. The great thing about Gonzo is that it allows porn producers to target specific market segments based on fetishes - anal, swallowing, cream pie, cum farting, etc. But, obviously, without really effective market research, it's kind of a hit and miss proposition with forums such as this being the only real means for the porn people to get good feedback. And, again, as Mutt made clear in his initial post, the most vocal people tend to be the Raincoaters, which means they are the ones being heard and responded to. And yes, I think this does systematically leave out a lot of voices.
On the other hand, I agree with RonK, money talks and Raincoaters spend a lot of it, so their voices should count for more. I think the well publicized success of No Cum Dodging Allowed from Red Light, as well as the great stuff that Evil Angel puts out from Jules Jordan and Joey Silvera, which everybody knows does really well, shows that the market for more extreme porn is alive and thriving.
But, it seems entirely reasonable to think that there is a market out there for something more in the middle. In fact, what comes to mind immediately are the new lines from New Sensations/Digital Sin - Erotica XXX 1-3 and Anal Trainer 1-4 and also the Peter North lines - North Pole and Anal Addicts. I think these fall pretty much in the middle ground category and I would be interested to know how well they are doing compared to some of the more extreme stuff.

It will nice if box covers contain the pictures of the talents and a description of what each talent does (either verbal or acronyms). Then the buyer knows exactly what scenes he/she will be getting and the issues of type of scene will be solved. Then the buyer can only complain about poor chemistry, bad camera angles, bad directing, lousy camera work, grainy reporduction, and poor mastering. It will take the surprise and anticipation out of buying and it will save me a bundle of bucks.
If someone wants to do a detailed study and wants to pay me big bucks (more than the budget of a porn title), feel free to hire me and pay my fees. Otherwise, we will have to do with guesses, various forums, hearsay, and sales figures. The best and most objective evidence at present is the sale figures as the other evidence are mostly subjective.
One thing I find interesting about the business is that I see people leaving companies and starting their own as fast as they come in. For example sales manager from company x gets mad and starts his/her own company and calls it company y, then company y grows and sales manager from company y gets mad and makes his/her own company and calls it company z. Now X,Y, and z are all selling to the same people. The bottom line is there are only the same amount of consumers. But company Y needs to out do company x, but company x won't be out done, now company Z needs to out do them both. Is the consumer base lost in this battle? Just an observation.
In response to Myk's last post, Women and Men all have different fantasies, but as humans we all look for something different. To keep sex interesting we fantasize. Not many women would probably confess to wanting to have forced oral sex, I'm sure many would object. I am also sure many men wouldn't mind one finger in their ass but many would object to two. No point, just a post.

Bingo. And if retailers would analyze their sales histories you would see the same thing reported, raincoaters make up a small part of the market.
Disturbing though that you report that the cheap compilations do so well. i guess for the average porn consumer price does matter.
Does AVN track adult movie sales nationwide? If so what methodology do they use?
Don't shoot the messenger, please! And I didn't say anything about puking. I've had a little stomach bug the last few days and I'd rather not think about gag reflexes and all that right now, anyway.
By "lucky", I was just imagining a little deepthroat action. No puke. No violence. Sheesh. I forgot what context I was tossing that into, so the mistake was in my choice of language. 'scuse me.
If I find that silly thing, I'll post a link. It may have been in a Cosmo (at the barber shop, yeah, the barber shop, that's it...).
Cobalt60 said: By "lucky", I was just imagining a little deepthroat action. No puke. No violence. Sheesh. I forgot what context I was tossing that into, so the mistake was in my choice of language. 'scuse me.
I have always wondered where AVN gets their lists from and sales numbers. The only sales numbers I have reported to ANYBODY is accountants LOL. As far as comps go, you get what you pay for. I think sometimes fans lose sight and making films is more than just making art. It is a business and although many people hate comps, they put bread on the table for more than just the video company. The adult industry is not exclusive to itself, it also effects several other "industries." I better stop now before I get off on an unrelated topic.
