Anyone have a favorite dvd shop in NYC (preferably in midtown manhattan)? I'm particularly interested in finding a store with not only current titles, but well indexed older (10 years max) selections.
I totally agree. I was in NYC in November looking though stacks of porn and Skronk's suggestion was the best.
They don't have everything (had a hard time finding An American Angel in Paris) but they do have a lot and it's organized by studio. They had Private Box sets and Erotic Media titles pretty cheap if you're into that.
There a bunch of stores on 8th with some other notables being a little north of there.
$18 for RLD $20/$27 for Evil I think $16 for old Anabolics (early numbers in the Gang Bang/Nymphos/DTH lines, etc.) Randy West/Ed Powers-type titles they almost give away ...
Thanks. I'm familiar w/ that shop and agree its really good for new titles from most of the major studios. By far, the best and cheapest I've found in the city. I just wish they organized the older stuff (anything over 5 years old) as well as the recent releases. Given the discount on those titles, I guess I can't complain. Thanks again. Any other recommendations?
I totally agree. I wish I had gone there as my first stop instead of my last.I was starting to see spots and get a stiff neck from too much shopping. Gotta love that 24 inches between shelves and illegible fonts on the spine. Next time I'm going with a list of titles to look for.The only other stores I liked were on the west side further north. I think they were as organized or better but were more expensive. It was the one with the white shelves packed tightly together with the roped off stairs to the basement. spooooky.

Are you looking for a shop that rents, or one that only sells? I lived outside of New York in Jersey for a few months, and when I would go into Manhattan on weekends, I noticed that there were more than enough porn shops to choose from, but none that rented. I suspect that's because they're afraid of losing money to tourists who would never bring the movies back.
I'm purchasing. There are so many stores along 8th ave that they're pretty cheap... especially at that place at 40th and 8th. Guess I'll just have to keep checking out each store one by one! I was hoping that there's a Tower Records of porn somewhere in midtown, but I'm thinking not.

I have shopped in Manhattan for many years and ever since I found that store, I have rarely bought anything in other NYC stores. They have the best prices and the most recent releases. They also have a small section on weird stuff.
yep,300 is by far the best place,pricewise,and like skronker said,the older Ed Powers-Randy West titles are really cheap,10 bucks.Also some of their mainstream stuff is very cheap too,for example Apprentice season 1 for 20 bucks.
you don't even have to come out into the street to get into 300,there's a subway entrance to it,just get your stuff and hop your ass back onto a train,lol.As for the 14 St stores the one between 2nd and 3rd ave sucks,the one between 6th and 7th is ok.Haven't been to Entertainment Outlet nearby that 6th ave store recently,but they had a lot of Barely Legals for 11.99 last time I looked.
300 is my favorite joint. I can pick up dvd's on my way to work and on my way home without leaving the f'in station. new dvd's are usually 17 dollars and they have all new dvds on the day of release. Best place in NYC in my opinion.
I hope to vacation in NYC this June, I will try to remember that. 300 DVD, 40th and 8th Ave. SW corner. Below ground, before subway turnstiles? I'll figute it out, I'm sure. And visit ATM before shopping there, rather than using debit card in store. Got it.
At least now older stuff is frequently VHS, in those big boxes much bigger than the tape itself that porn always used for some reason. Just wait until more of the old stuff is DVD instead of VHS, then there will really be eye strain and difficulty finding what you want.
Maybe we're not all coming from the subway.Depends on what you're looking for. Since space is limited in NYC, most stores seem to have their strong and weak points. The store on 14 street between 2/3 aves actually has a decent selection of new releases and a good vintage/oldies section (dvd). I was actually surprised to see they had stuff like a Crystal Dawn collection on DVD. They haven't had the sense to slash their vhs prices but they'll figure that out eventually. They don't have the bargains that the subway joint does but then few places do.
None of these joints have any real variety, just new releases and junk. Used to be you could get anything you wanted on 42nd.I remember stores that stocked Little Oral Annie,Slavesex,Rodney Moore, Blue Vanities, Swedish Erotica, etc., and you could get a blowjob in the peeps in the back. Now? Who cares.
Don't ignore DVDSPALACE at 47th & 8th - especially if you are looking for something a bit more "esoteric". Kinematics at 37th and 6th is very good for kink but, very high priced. Also upstairs from 40th & 8th has some interesting titles.
I found a receipt for another store at 781 8th Avenue. They were organized by studio but were in these awkward flip folders. Their prices were about $5 higher.
Oh sh*t -- just went to 300 down in the subway staircase. You guys were right. There are some amazing price deals. And the selection is very good. It blows away the competition -- up to a point.
It's a tight space, like a maze. Could be organized better (they have fetish mixed in with the other tapes). There's all kinds of good stuff that will take hours to find because it's randomly put out. DVDs of different titles are four deep on the shelf -- be ready to take time to look.
Store is crowded as hell at rush hour. I'd still head to fourteenth street if it was very late and/or I didn't feel like dealing with the crowd.

The new stuff in 300 Book Center is easy to find, but there are a few studios, like Mach 2 and Acid Rain, which is not well stocked. They have Anabolic, Diabolic, PlatinumX, Red Light, Third Degree, and Zero Tolerance well stocked. The older stuff are all over the place and hard to find, but the older stuff goes on sale and is cheap.
I've bought a few of their discounted 3.95 and 5.95 titles,you get what you pay for,lol,they're usually very poorly authored with lousy scenes and downright misleading covers that sometimes don't even have the stars pictured on them.They let me exchange one of those,but quite reluctantly.I'd say save your dough and buy the better titles. I've noticed some of those other 8th ave stores have empty cases for browsing,presumably you bring it up to the counter and they'll give you the actual scratched dvd from a pile they have stacked under the register,I never buy from those shops.
I visited NYC a couple of months back and, using this thread for advice, visited the 300 DVD store. I was most impressed with their selection, organisation and price.
I'm still a newcomer to 300 and it's certainly a worthwhile store -- the deep discounts on the older stuff are a big draw. For new releases it's one of the best places.
The main problem is that if you are looking for the older stuff it's not organized.
But never just go to one store. Every store will have something that the other does not. For a more laid-back shopping experience the two stores on fourteenth st. (betw. 6 and 7 aves and near 2 ave) are still a good bet. Not many discounts though.
