I read an article on the Internet that said that a high percentage of straight guys do gay movies.
As gay men, do you feel short-changed by this statement?
An interesting thought.

That's a "yes" and a "no" - If the str8 performer does a good job and is believable in the part he plays in the film/video, then I have no problem whatsoever (witness many of the performers in Kristen Bjorn videos - about 40% are str8 identified).

However, I do have a problem with str8 performers who give the job little more than lip service (and poor lip service at that). And I especially have problems with str8 performers who put down the genre and their viewers after having made money off the gay community.

You might want to check out the VHS tape "Shooting Porn” a film about the gay porn industry. In a review I read the following: “Another topic which was discussed at length was the issue of straight men in the gay porn industry (i.e. "gay for pay"). One of the featured actors self-identified as straight, as apparently do many others actors in the industry (it's apparently not unheard of to film a sex scene where all of the actors involved personally identify as straight). Many of the gay actors in Shooting Porn had mixed feelings about what "straight" really means in this context, and one was pretty skeptical that any gay porn actors are REALLY straight. His frank summary of the matter: "I don't buy it at all - I've worked with so many guys who claim they're straight, and stress they're straight, and frankly they're the best cocksuckers around." “

Regardless of what someone might be willing to do under certain circumstances, e.g., for money when making videos, or even to keep a roof over his head, a person is relatively "straight" if that person prefers to have sex only with members of the opposite sex. Willingness to have sex with someone of the same sex under contrived conditions does not make a person gay.

Being gay is an inborn thing.

I don't personally care 2 know if a gay-movie performer is actually str8, bi, gay or martian if he delivers a good performance. Everybody's here for the money, & to be honest i always find it doubtful when i always see those muscle-bound 100% non-effiminate guys trying to make us believe they're gay. I mean, as if...I know there is supposed to be gay men that are totally masculine and non-effeminate, but i still have to meet them. There's always a voice, or a walk, or however small a detail that betrays them that u don't find in gay porn actors. And i know i'm gonna take flack for this. So u'd have to be really naive.
I do admire these guys, actually. As a gay man,not only would it be really difficult for me 2 have sex with someone from the opposite sex, but in front of a camera !

i should be so lucky, lucky lucky lucky

As a gay man, I know I am gay to the core of my being. Nonetheless, I do not believe science has settled the question definitively that environment plays an absolutely zero percent role in developing and manifesting a person’s sexual nature. What I think the guy in the tape was saying, if I may be so bold, is that some of these self-defined straight guys in gay porn are just enjoying gay sex too much to really “prefer to have sex only with members of the opposite sex.” It’s obviously more an indictment of their honesty than their mercenary behavior.

Whoa there vodka... are you implying that men have to be effeminate to be gay? I don't subscribe to that theory at all. If you haven't run into any 100% manly-man gay men yet, then you must be hanging out in the wrong gay bars!

I'm kind of on the fence as far as straight men in gay porn goes. I like the idea of watching a gay man get fucked, but if isn't able to get into it, it kind of kills it for me.

Joeblow -- You are surely right. I have known a few manly men that people would never guess were gay in a million years. My roommate from college, for example, was the studly jock to end all studly jocks.

The nature versus nurture argument will probably go on forever. I suspect the truth is that there has to be a nature-based component - a genetic propensity, so to speak - towards being gay in order for nurture to influence it one way or the other. I also suspect that nurture and psychological reactions and defenses play a major role in the masculine or effeminate nature of the resulting personality. And I suspect that these same factors influence to a great degree whether or not physical expression of homosexuality is ever even allowed to surface. (This may well explain some of the homophobia expressed by many gay-bashers.)

This does not even begin to address cultural differences in pegging someone as being gay or straight. In the USA, an effeminate mannerism is too often enough to doom some poor teenager to a hazing hell by his peers - sometimes even to the point of murder or suicide (I know I'm making an extreme example here). Other societies consider someone to be gay only if he adopts the passive role sexually. His partners, by limiting themselves to being sexual "tops," retain their heterosexual identities.

However, all this is moot in terms of ones perception of his own sexuality. There are effeminate straight men and there are masculine gay men. And bisexual men are seldom androgynous. So much for stereotypes.

A person's sexuality is based on his own perceptions of himself and how he expresses that sexuality under free will. Those sexual activities expressed while in contrived situations, be it employment in gay porn videos or extended periods of incarceration, should not be used to define an individual's sexuality.

Part of the problem is that too many of us seem to need to pigeon-hole everyone with a gay/str8 label as if that will allay all fears and answer all questions. The rest of the problem is that it just isn't that simple.

P.S. I derive vicarious pleasure seeing some mucho-macho, str8-identified stud getting plowed in the ass in a gay video too!

The whole spectrum of sexuality is pretty broad, so I have no problem with someone who is straight having sex with other men. Some of the best sex I ever had was with "straight" men.

The whole Gay/Straight thing is tough to pin down. For me it is a matter of affectional orientation, not sex. Who you love not who you fuck.

Splitting pubic hairs I guess...
