I ventured out into the Black Friday madness yesterday and bought a 17" off-brand ("SVA") LCD monitor at Office Depot. $370 - $140 in rebates. Thing is, it's got a tiny spot that is always white - I assume this is a single pixel which is stuck "on." My impression in the past has been that the manufacturers take the position that you're not guaranteed a 100% perfect screen, and will only take it back if it has a certain number of problem pixels. Is this still the case?

The sales clerk stuck a decal to the box saying, basically, that I have 14 days to return it if I'm not fully satisfied. Nothing about bad pixel counts. So I guess I could return it if I wanted to bother. I guess my quesion is, are the LCD monitors being sold currently still typically having a bad pixel or two or three, or has the quality control gotten to the point where this doesn't really happen so much anymore? In other words, if I exchange the one I bought for another one, how likely is it that I'll get a perfect one?

I think it is called Dead Pixels. If they are white then they wont work. Most of the stores will accept the item back if it has more than 8 dead pixels.

Wow... that would drive me bananas... I guess if the manufacturing and QA on those things is still like that, that's one reason not to get an LCD monitor.

I bought a 17" Samsung a year ago, and it was perfect. I've heard that Samsung, which is one of the main manufacturers of the LCD panels, keeps the best ones for its own self-branded monitors. I don't know whether that's a myth, or if there is some truth to it.

All of the manufacturers have some sort of dead and/or non-responsive pixel policy; however, none of the policies is great. Rule of thumb is that they will accept returns only if there are 8 total pixel errors or if there are 3 pixel errors within a square inch of the screen's surface. Probably less than one in three is absolutely perfect. Many have one or two pixels stuck a particular color but none totally dead or totally locked on.

I generally recommend that you examine before you buy and buy the one you examine.

Guess I'll be waiting for them to get better at it before I look seriously at buying an LCD monitor. Even the tiny Trinitron tube grid lines drove me crazy. :)

I have a 21" Samsung tube and a 17" Zenith tube. Guess I'll stick with those for a while longer. :)
