Call me silly, but an important part of a adult title is the quality of the camera. That being said it seems that Vivid , while having some good looking talent, uses HORRIBLE camera's that make the whole production look poor. Even their only DVD I own (Stiletto - yes a mistake but I was new to this at the time) looks horrible.

Now to the contrary, Wicked, sems to use better equiptment. It's not the best possible I'm sure, but it is better and for me it makes a difference. Not as soft (washed out) as a Vivid title.
What strikes me as odd is that reviewers never seem to mention this in a review. Is it that all Vivid titles are crappy in this way and that all Wicked productions are a bit better ?
I may be out of line with all of this. I only own a couple of titles from each studio and that's the extent of my colection. Any input would be appreciated.

Hello Far Star and welcome to ADT. I agree with you about Vivid.
I don't know anything about which studios use different sorts of cameras..but I blame the image quality on the staff thats transferring it to dvd.
So far..what I've seen from Vivid..has been disappointing. Miraculously there are some that are pretty good..Extreme Sex has a very very good transfer (best so far of what I've seen from Vivid)..Original Sin has a decent transfer..although it looks a bit washed out. I only judged a few...and I decided to no longer support Vivid. Oh, Vivid's The Neighbor also has a pretty decent transfer. The Window..now that is a very crappy transfer..and what a shame. I mean I liked the plot..the sex..the first scene was shot very well..but the transfer interfered to the point of not being able to see the chics pussy lips. This is bad..it gives the pornstars a bad wrap..because customers comment on how fucking crappy the disc was..and it was the transfer's fault..and not the sexual performances. Also..I can't believe how much effort Vivid puts into their extras and not the best part of dvd..resolution. I just don't get it? I own this VCA disc called Timeless..I'll be damn if this disc alone blew almost all of Vivid's porn titles! Being that the transfer is so great in Timeless..the pussy looks to good to be true. What I'm trying to say in serious terms is, that if the transfer is sharp and great..like VCA's..then the viewer is more involved. I also heard good things about Wicked..but haven't seen one of their titles yet. I also heard Diabolic..has superb transfers throughout their current adult dvd released titles. Evil Angel I adore..because of their very good work..you see..it seems Vivid..is one company which is capable of being on top..but because they don't put effort into their imaging ways..they get more and more people who gives up..in buying their titles. You know..I really am not evil..or mean..by me saying this..but I am so happy I stopped buying Vivid titles..because with the internet and sites..I've learned that there are great companies out there that have what I want..and not discs with large amounts of uneccessary extras..and poor picture quality. For now so far..I want to give kudos to these adult studios which I own titles from:
1) VCA
2) Digital Playground
3) Evil Angel
4) Sunshine
5) Metro
..as I get more and more into the porn watching and collecting..I'm sure..there will be more companies added to my kudo list.
Other companies that I think..only think..that are good also..that which I have not purchased or tested their titles yet:
1) Private
2) Diabolic
3) Wicked

Hi Far Star-
I never really notice the video quality unless it's affects my viewing experience (i.e. it sucks.) I guess that's why I don't often mention it in my reviews. I've found more audio problems with adult DVDs than video. Maybe that's just my luck
Since I like classics so much I've been watching a lot of VCA DVDs - they do a great job with video quality. I did watch Fantasy Chamber from Ultimate the other day - the transfer was terrible - all the neat lighting effects were lost amongst the fuzzy shapes (otherwise known as naked bodies.) Too bad because the movie is all about the visual.

Far Star: As someone who has watched tons of videos from just about every studio out there, I came to the conclusion a long time ago that different studios have different "looks" to their productions. I occasionally comment on that fact in my reviews, for example, saying that something looks like a typical (fill in the blank) studio release. But it's hard to describe what those studio "looks" are...I liken it to the historic definition of obscenity, "you'll know it when you see it."
Although I don't claim to know very much about the equipment they use on adult sets, I will say that there are a lot of factors that contribute to the final video product. It's more than just the quality of the camera equipment, but the format (film vs. various video formats), locations (sets vs. practical locations), lighting, and editing.
In the case of Vivid, I'm pretty sure that the "soft" look you describe is a creative decision, not really a technical one. Just about all of Vivid's features are destined to find their way to pay cable, and I don't think those consumers are looking for crystal clear, sharp, or "evening news" quality video.
In general it's pretty safe to say that all productions by a given studio are going to have similar visual styles. It's not necessarily that some studios are "better" than others in that regard, but it is true that each one has a different approach toward their cinematography. That's the reason why many people develop clear preferences toward particular studios.

I'm glad to hear that I am not the only one who feels this way. I suppose that a large part of it is influenced by personal tastes. I guess that it's my taste to prefer a sharper image. I imagine that also people have different priorities. My top 2 are tied being actress looks and image quality.
I'll probably stay away from Vivid for now unless thay change their ways. I only own 1 DVD and don't plan on buying very many in the future (too darn expensive). My next purchases will be Satyr (curious to see Chloe in action) and perhaps a Virtual Sex title.
