Study: Good Porn Still Hard To Find

BOSTON — According to a report released by the Institute for Advanced Media Studies, good porn remains hard to find. "Though it's true that there is 350 percent more pornographic material on the market than there was five years ago, quality porn is as difficult to find as ever," Dr. Jeffrey Conchlin said. "Sometimes, you can find a DVD with hot chicks who seem to be enjoying themselves, but usually, they've got big fake tits, the sex is either boring or way too gross, and the setting is totally depressing. This trend is discouraging." Dr. Conchlin added that porn filmmakers are at least a decade away from seamlessly combining good storytelling with hot DP.

I wonder how he defines 'good'.

Although I hold Dr. Conchlin in the highest esteem, I'm hoping to proved him wrong by the end of the year.

I have to agree with DenverDon - What is good? Everyone has such varied tastes that its hard to define good. Just look at the reviews that different movies get. It can be across the board depending on the reviewers mood or what they want and were expecting to see. I think that porn today IS good or it would not be selling as much as it is. We also would not be sitting at our computers posting on this site about this industry if we were not all interested in today's porn!

Here are a few ideas:

No electrical cords, dirty sneakers or lightstands in the corners of shots.

No thoughtless jump-cuts or x-dissolves.

No off-camera whispering from the director (good god this is soooo easy to fix in post I have to think it's intentional – intentionally bad!)

No actors with trailerpark dentition or enunciation driving $80K sportscars, unless you're on a David Lynch trip; and if you're on a David Lynch trip you'd better be good. Wait, skip all the David Lynch stuff. No expensive cars.

No panning down from the ceiling or up from the floor more than once in a scene.

Tony C - I agree with all your comments and I am sure that MOST of us as producers follow the guidelines you have laid out. I am only suggesting that what is good to one person may be boring to someone else - one mans trash is another mans treasure. Taste is very subjective.

Most? Hmmm. After a long hiatus from the world of commercial smut, I got an x-rent account and asked the ADT community to give me a list of 10-20 must see flicks.

With the exception of Stagliano and Tricia Devereaux's scene in Toy Story, I don't think I saw one scene that didn't violate at least two of the above guidelines – usuallly all of them.

As the good doctore says, good porn is still hard to find.

'Good' and 'Great' are different. For 'good' I mostly look at the women and the sex.
What is 'way too gross' to some is a turn-on for others. Judging by the amount of DAP and DPP threads, he doesn't begin to know what long time viewers like.
Some actually like implants, so that is no way to judge. Not me, but at least I can acknowledge the fact that some like or even prefer implants.
Setting - well, I like a good setting, but if the rest is good, I content. Then again, it could be part of the difference between 'very good' and 'great'.

However, the credit is from The Onion which runs spoof stories. Good topic though.

If it's from the Onion I would bet the entire article is fake.

Where has he looked exactly? Does he assume all porn is American?

There is some very good porn out there, just check out Viv Thomas productions or movies directed by French director John B. Root for instance....

With titles like "New E-Toilet To Revolutionize On-Line Shitting" how can you go wrong. It's basically your college paper online.

It's a shame they've put the majority of their work on a subscription site. Isn't anything free any more?

Well, I guess they gotta eat, too. Shouldn't this be moved to the "nonsense" thread since that's essentially what the Onion is (in a good way, I mean)? And some Europeans say Americans don't understand sarcasm.
Peace.

Someone should staple this to Brad Armstrong's forehead so he gets to read it every time he goes to the bathroom . And add in not just ceiling -> floor , and floor -> ceiling , but any aimless and unnecessary pans . It doesn't make a director look sophisticated and directorial , it just makes it impossible to see the action !

Ok . I've vented . Now I can unclench the buttocks once more .
