I would like to put in a suggestion to Steph for a film maker subforum. I know there are a lot of adult film makers, directors here, some famous and some aspiring.

I feel it is such a waste to have this HUGE network of talented individuals on here and no direct forum for film makers to post questions and discuss making adult films.

Such things like cameras, sets, lighting, editing, recruiting, etc. etc. could be discussed and ideas shared ultimately creating better products and helping people from making common mistakes.

I could go to 100s of other forums and ask the question "how should I light my adult film scene?" and no responses would compare to actually hearing professionals respond like what's possible on this forum.

So I just feel it's such a waste of such a great network to not have a dedicated subforum for it. I noticed there are tons of threads scattered throughout.

Just a suggestion! :)

First page is nothing but talk about Vista, Apple, etc. :)

It must be burried in there. It's also mixed in the general forum and others. I just thought it would be nice to have a subforum just for adult film makers to discuss making adult films.

Seems like the general forum is more for talking about DVD releases which is cool. And tech is more for technology stuff like Vista/non porn stuff.

I feel like I'm posting out of place in either really. A separate forum for it would make sense I think because people who are asking about their Vista/Apple pc don't want to hear about what wide angle lens someone else is using. And I'm sure someone talking about the hottest DVD to just be released in the porn pool doesn't want to hear about tripods. ha

One could only hope. We could start by moving threads to the subforum directly that relate to adult film making. I would volunteer to search for them. Just need a solid list of around 100 or so threads to be moved there to get it going.

How do you propose restricting the forum to adult film makers? Furthermore, what interest would such a restricted forum be to the general community?

I'm not suggesting to restrict it but to have it open to anyone who is interested in discussing or learning more about how the DVD/adult film making process works. I think having a dedicated subforum would benefit everyone here because from my experience, people in the Porn Pool would like to talk about porn DVDs. And people in the poll forums like polls. And people in the tech forum like talking about general tech stuff like Vista, Apple, etc.

Right now anyone who wants to ask more of a film making related question could post it in the Porn Pool but it would get lost in the mix because people there don't really want to talk about it.

Just imagine an "Ask Jules Jordan about directing" thread or some other thread where an industry professional chimes in to answer questions. That won't happen in the porn pool because it would get bumped back and the incentive to create that thread is lost. Whereas having a dedicated subforum professionals might be more open to sharing their expertise or experience to upandcoming adult film makers.

And so could fans who buy their DVDs. Just a suggestion.

Wasn't there a fairly popular thread on one of the forums titled something to the effect of Why is 90% of Porn Crap? Why would one want advice from the people who make that 90%? For every Jules Jordan and John Stagliano there are ten Slain Waynes and Johnny Toxics.

Ha! Well I wouldn't say 90% of porn is crap. Even the crappiest $5 porn has at least 1 looker in it having sex. Possibly a good thread topic would be what's the worst porno you've ever seen. And then we could see what people are calling crap! One mans junk is another mans porno treasure. LOL

But seriously, vision is not transferrable. I will never direct like Jules Jordan. I will never be as smooth as Mike Quasar. Or as gritty/edgy as some of the other directors out there. But I can still learn a lot from them.

Regarding how to light a porn set, how to shoot certain angles, how to prepare for some of the BS that is coming my way.

The vision and overall ideas is what will make it all different. The inbetween is what I'd like to talk about. Just is such a waste that there is no subforum for it given there are so many here apparently that think 90% is crap. I would think that feedback to upandcoming directors would be valuable. I personally would listen to what fans thought. My plan is to direct based on my views as a fan, what's missing, what I would change, what I like, etc.

Just such a waste that there isn't a subforum for it. All these professionals login here and create accounts to post messages and could stop by and share a few suggestions in that subforum based on their experiences. Fans could post in there with there ideas and then even see the finished products afterwards. Do you think Steph would create one? Or am I wasting my time suggesting it. :)

Thanks...

I don't see why Tech Talk can't be used to discuss the technicals of making films - as it has been. There is very little activity in that forum so it's not like the threads would get buried.

Industry people generally search their name if they don't participate regularly. So if you mention the name of the person you're hoping will answer your question chances are they'll see the thread and answer if they feel like it.

Hey Steph,

Thanks for the reply. But let me quote this:

"DVD compatibility, DVD authoring, computer stuff, digital devices, all things techie (including adult film making)"

Just isn't the same as a dedicated film maker subforum. I hate to say it but I think posting film making stuff in there would be a waste of time and would be really out of place. This could be verified by looking through the first 3-5 pages which are all related to DVD/PC stuff.

Also I think a film making subforum would be a big hit here given the fact that so many people that post here have been on an adult film set before. Where else can you really say that? It's just such a waste to not have one here.

If I found 50-100 existing threads on ADT regarding adult film making that could be moved there to start it..would you consider a test run? :)

If anything by attracting wannabe film makers to your forums you'd be increasing the overall quality and influence of these forums on the products created. And increase traffic and reviews. Plus it gives well known adult professionals more of an outlet to reply to posts. Encouraging more pornstars, directors to register and join the discussions.

Would be huge for the forums I think as a resource in the long run too.

People that make indie adult films would flock here for feedback and tips and ideas. Possibly adding more reviews and it increases your overall content, expanding out your marketshare. :)

My .02: The business of shooting and producing adult movies is incredibly competitive. There's too much product out there and too many companies producing it. I seriously doubt that we would get much quality discussion and participation from industry folks beyond what we already have here. Why come here to educate your competition or possibly create new competitors? We might get participation from people trying to get into the business.

I do think the concept of the sub-forum is OK, but I doubt it would be very busy. If we see more discussions of this type over time we could certainly add a sub-forum. It only takes me 15 minutes or so to poke the values into the database.

If you found 50 - 100 posts from over 1 million made since 1999 that could be moved into the sub-forum I don't think that's enough volume. It would be better left in tech talk or right here in the porn pool.

Well I was suggesting 100 threads related to adult film making, not 100 posts. 100 threads would be around 1,000 posts approximately or 1/4 the size of your current smallest subforum. But if you don't think it would be popular considering you have 100s of the industry top workers posting on your site who see sets on a daily basis and could provide great feedback unlike on any other forum...then I guess I'll take your word for it.

The reality is who wants to help anyone. Everytime you help someone you could be helping yourself instead. But the reality is people do help each other. Even their competitors because at the end of the day vision conquers all and vision isn't transferrable.

But whatever, you're the boss. I guess we'll never know..maybe in the future I guess...or I could always create my own forum..who knows..

I totally agree wit Danceswithporn. If adultdvdtalk want to be the number one forum for porn you need a subforum about film making.

Steph: I dont get why it should be in tech talk? Kind of sounds on you that it is really hard creating a subforum. I believe it would be worth the effort though.

Drew Black: That is a very tiresome and dull opinion. I think that the forum has already proved you wrong on this. I think the forum is quite open for sharing buisness information.

Thank you! It's nice to see someone else agrees with the idea of having an adult film making subforum! I have checked all over the internet, asked on other film making forums and nobody anywhere knows of an adult film making forum on the internet! I created a thread here asking and nobody knew of one.

I would think it would be a great way for professionals to advertise their work by talking about how they filmed it.

"When I was working on XYZ, we had this and this problem, we did this to resolve it, you will notice here that this happened. This is why..etc. etc."

I personally would go out and rent or buy DVDs just on hearing about stuff like that just to see what they are talking about. If they said they used this lens on this scene, this lens on the next, this on the next, I would watch their movie to see the difference.

It's like currently when someone brings up a star and a scene, people get the background on it and after they get the background it makes them want to see it even more.

Anyways I have rambled on this for some time now. It's apparent they don't want the subforum here. I've had like 5 mods including the owner of the site say no. :)

So I don't want to keep pushing something they don't want. That's why I tried to drop it.

I think there is a lot of demand for it. There really is no good content out there on the subject. I searched amazon.com for books on adult film making and there was one that got like a 2 star rating. People reviewed it saying it was too pessimistic and didn't really provide much info. The other books are more biographical on the industry. So there is a market for books on it too right now if anyone wanted to write one. I would preorder a Mike Quasar book on film making! HA

I think the amount of work that goes into a book is just too much. Then getting good distribution for it is tough. And then getting bookstores to stock it considering it's adult film related is tough! The few that are out there are never instock in any bookstores. They just don't keep them out.

So that's why I think a forum would be a better viable alternative. Quick answers on a few topics. The threads would all get archived and be searchable across the web. The professional that provides "insider" feedback and info on adult film making would be greatly praised. Would receive some recognition for certain films. It would almost be like a graduate level forum on adult film. Lighting, cameras, etc.

They don't cover that in film school either. There is no adult film 101. So there is a huge market out there for a forum about it. Many would agree there are tons of film makers out there doing porn, too many in fact! Yet there is no forum for them???

I have thought about creating my own forum and I've been seriously thinking about it. For $85 a year I can get a vbulletin software package. For $60 a year I can get hosting. For $10 I can get a domain. I could have it up and running for around $155. I could always upgrade hosting and sell advertising in each subforum.

I have ideas on marketing it and making it a premiere forum. I think I would have to branch it out though and in many ways it would be a competitor to this site.

Is it worth it? Time will tell. :)

And could you imagine if someone registered on my forum some newbie film maker..and learned from the forum and came out with a top selling adult dvd. Suddenly they are blowing up and all those newb film makers that are the future of adult films that are posting on my forum are attracting talent. And that talent (famous pornstars) will want to talk with them on my forum and network. Then that talent attracts posters who want to talk about adult dvds with talent in the other subforums!

Suddenly AdultDVDtalk is out of business! j/k LOL

Dances - all you do is talk about wanting a forum. Discuss what you want to discuss in regards to film making. See if there is any interest. Show me that there's some interest from people producing adult films. If you'd rather start your own forum go ahead.

People that want to give feedback on the making of adult films do it all the time right here in the porn pool.

I'm only a lowly consumer, but I think it would interest me to follow discussions on the topic, for what that's worth.

Trying it out can't hurt.

Actually once we create a new forum there's pretty much no going back -we can't just merge it into another forum. There have been a lot of suggestions for new forums over the years. Whether we do one or not on a topic depends on how much actual discussion of that topic there is.

i think a new forum for that would be a good thing. i like photography and would like to read anybody's tips, suggestions, etc for filming and the whole porn filming process. Tech Talk does seem kinda weird to talk about filming in. It would be good if the forum was done here on ADT and not on some other site since there is already so much industry traffic coming to this site.

it would always be cool to hear some filmer/director's opinions on everything. it would also be benefitial because they could say "don't use [insert product] here to shoot because is sucks for [this reason]". that's just my opinion, though. no disrespect to Steph and Drew.

I'd definately be interested in a film maker forum. Not because I want to enter the adult industry, just because it would be interesting to hear some of the experiences shared.
Not just from directors, but from performers, producers and anyone else involved.
That's why I think it doesn't belong in 'tech talk' - it could cover so much more than lens sizes.
I can totally understand though that Steph is reluctant to start a new forum that nobody uses.
Maybe we should have a poll to gauge interest?

I think such a "subforum" would be better in the form of customer suggestions and feedback. Sure, people give suggestions and feedback on the other forums all the time but it's scattered all over the place. Only the most determined adult film makers are going to go searching all over ADT for customer feedback. It would be convenient for all involved if it was (mostly) contained in one place. Of course, some clueless newbies would still post their feedback in odd places but that could be moved as it now is for other subforums.

I agree that we already have a forum for technical stuff. Anyone who wants to discuss lighting, cameras and stuff already has a forum for that.

There is already an organized source of customer feedback on this site - reviews.

As for suggestions, yes, they are all over the forums, and they are also all over the map. However, people tend to make them in threads according to subject, or because an industry person they wish to make the suggestion to has already posted in that thread. This seems logical enough to me.
