My old Dell Vostro 3300 is developing bad sectors on the hard drive at an alarming rate. The SMART drive stats say failure is imminent. So I'm thinking about swapping the drive.
Is it possible to copy the drive image to a new drive and simply swap hardware without re-installing everything? I'm thinking about buying the exact same drive from Dell since it's only $65.

If I could find a 512GB SSD for a reasonable price I might. But it's hard to pass up a drive for $65.

When I bought my SSD from Crucial, it came with an upgrade kit. It was a rebranded version of this one from Apricorn.<br
It worked perfectly. For $19, I think that it's a good investment. Cloning the drive was virtually effortless.

Agree either go 1st bay SSD 2nd bay large size rotational 2.5" or get a seagate momentusXL which is a hybrid and performs well in benchmarks.
I've had both setups

I ended up ordering one of the 750GB hybrid drives. That model has 8GB of flash that acts as a read buffer. Also ordered one of those USB to SATA adapters so I can (hopefully) easily clone my drive.

Harri was right and I saw a good boost from a 7200rpm 2.5" laptop drive to the seagate momentusXT

The process of cloning and swapping the drive was super simple. Can't say that I really notice much of a performance improvement yet. I primarily use the computer for web browsing and email so I don't think the NAND cache on the drive will do much for me. Maybe Thunderbird launches a half-second faster but hard to tell.
