I won't mention any names, but it amazes me why so many failed (in my view) porn directors continually get paid and money thrown at their movies, when the results are poor.
There is one in particular whose movies are just bad. This person just misses the point every time. I won't even mention the gender, but he/she is never out of work and all I do when I see their movies is to switch off.
So what are the politics behind this, if any?
Thanks.

I would guess that it's all about the money. Someone is buying this "terrible" directors movies. I have a couple of these directors on my "you suck" list. I just have to accept the possibility that it's all subjective and it's entirely possible that I'm the only one who hates his/her work.

I find it especially annoying when some class talent is book for one of their dire movies and it fails to be either interesting or hot. A damp squib!

^I think that's another reason why bad directors can still be successful. If they hire the top notch talent then that's good enough for most porn fans. I'll admit that I do pay an awful lot a attention to image quality (no blurry images), camera moves, angles, body positioning, set design and lighting. I'm not sure that stuff matters to most folks. On a more positive note Jay Sin routinely hits all of these check marks plus he uses some of the hottest girls in the biz.

^Oh yes my friend it does matters. And it does a lot! If what you mention is considered details (about camera, light, positioning and many others) I will have to state that there are so many other minor things that play very significant role in making the difference between a good and a bad director. These details sometimes are not easy to be distinguished by an average viewer. So he cannot describe why one image for example has more sex appeal than another but he will indeed instinctively choose the better one.
So yes bad directors can still be successful as long as they deliver the kind of porn some people like. But eventually some other directors will come forth and offer the same sex in better quality. Then the audience will wake up and make his choice. Gradually the viewer will become more demanding and he will seek the best for him. This is the history of marketing. Plus that's the reason why this site exists in order people like you and me and every other poster here to contribute in making porn better!

Gee Metal...
I would need to write an essay to answer you specifically... yet I will try to be brief.
There are three major factor categories of which a scene is consisted of, in my opinion. Photography, Choreography and Eroticism.
Photography has to do with the camera work, the image quality, the editing, the lighting etc... Although that for many people seem standard stuff there are many details hidden in this craft. As a director you have to know the secrets of photography in order to cover the action well in exterior and interior. You need to decide in seconds what angle is the proper, according to the performers natural assets and the on going position. You have to master the art of close up and wide shooting, to eliminate shadow issues etc..
Choreography has to do with the body position as you mentioned and how the sexual activities proceed. This is a very crucial condition group which differentiates a good director from a bad one. Is not so easy as many think. You have no idea how many things you have to take into consideration before planning a certain position. Things like the performers body structure and physical skills, the surface where the sex will take place, the safety of the girl, the efficiency of the penetrations according to the specific shape and dimensions of the male talents. And as you understand the more people are involved in the scene the more difficult it becomes. Plus there are certain positions which are very technically and physically demanding and require special treatment from the directors and the performers.
Eroticism has to do with the sexual performance. The chemistry between the actors, the energy, the attitude of the starlets, the "hardcoreness" of the scene, the passion, numerous erotic activities that can occur during sex and of course the presence of any potential plot or fetish etc...

All these factors are dynamic, meaning that influence one another. Thus one change in position means that the director might change the angle also accordingly and can activate a different set of erotic activities. One good director should plan everything in satisfying detail and have the experience and the skills to overcome difficulties that might arise during the setup and execution of the adult script.
Finally there is something that I personally consider one of the most important feature of all. The psychologist ability. In other words the ability of the director to prepare psychologically his performers, to boost them up, to convince and transfer to them his thoughts and generally to create the proper climate for the scene.

Anyone seen a movie, looked at the cast and thought, 'wow, this is gonna be ****ing HOT!!!
Then you look at who directed it, and you go 'oh, sh**!'

^ Same with me but it's more because that director performs in the scenes rather than because of their direction.

@StarGrek thanks for taking the time to answer in such detail. I think you are spot on with what makes a great porn scene.
For me, and this is just a personal opinion, even all the categories must go hand by hand, the most important factor is photography, and this is where most scenes fails. Few directors, probably due to a time or money factor doesnt bother in prepare or light the set properly, wich for me is the trademark of good porn. Hate so much when everything looks blurry due to poor lightning. Then theres another vital factor for me that involves outfits, make up, hair do's and such. Even this compensate if the scene is hot enough. Then of course come other factors as camera work. As you said, know what to shoot and when. Cant believe how many scenes ive seen when theres something hot going on then the director just focus in doin endless in and out closeups. Or (hate this sooooo much) the girls showing off proudly her gorgeous cum covered face or cum playing or something like that, then they just CUT THE SCENE! simply outrageous
Choreography certainly depends of the performers as you pointed. Even i like busty girls, simply cant deny the endless posibilities a petite girl offers regarding positions and camera angle. A total eye fest. Same with eroticism. It would also depend of the nieches, directors personal tastes, performers abilities, chemistry and so and so on.
I think the biggest problems is that there just too many directors that thinks shooting porn is just place a camera in front of a couple fucking and hit the record button
Just my 2 cents of course

Terrible directors for me is when they use their " Studs friends " in their movies / sites !!
Secondly is when they use small / pencil dicks with big ass cheeks or hot babes . Cant they see the scene will come out as a failure ??
And lastly is when they use one stud for 350 days !!! aka contract stud .
An example how could jules jordan or chris streams use seth gamble aka MR PENCIL DICK in a D.P scene !! ?? seriously ?? in europe they dont that kind of politics / shit !! I was totally shocked !! scene completely ruined .
Seth gamble pencil dick doing a D.P for " GonZo Jules jordan " with horny asian porn girl London keys !!!
This is the current situation of american porn right now . so so so poor and low for viewers to watch !!
They book cheap / limp dick guys like van wylde , damon dice , martinez , tony d , BAMBINO , TARZAN with girls like eva lovia , with girls like cherie deville , ava adams , julia ann - big money small dicks easy money !!
Have u seen the guys N.A are currently using ?? Take a look guys .

How hard can it be? You just need to understand the subtle difference between seeing penetration and not seeing penetration. And I mean labia wrapped around penis. Side cheek doesn't count for good porn. Keep all feet, legs and hands away from the shot. Look at the frame. It should be filled with flesh, not furniture. Strip the pillows and blankets off the bed. I avoid women directors.

You know there's now gonna be a load of directors asking themselves, 'I wonder if they mean me?' Ha ha.

This kind of simplified formula is the what makes a director bad IMO. I see plenty of scenes made by directors who are obviously using some type of simple formula to make their scenes. I think the directing style should adapt to the theme, niche, subject, performers, location, etc.
