The firm developed the cutting-edge technology with Hitachi Maxell Ltd., a subsidiary specialising in audio and video tapes. "We expect demand for a DVD with a bigger capacity and hope to market the product globally in the near future," said Hitachi Ltd. spokesman Takeshi Kawakami. The latest technology involves stacking multiple data-storing layers to ensure accurate reading and writing of a vast amount of data that can run up to 400 hours. Expanding DVD storage capacity requires increasing the number of layers used in a DVD. Saki At-Large 2087 Posts 11/99	Posted - May 17 2003 : 6:23PM Definitely not...the whole motivation for a hardware manufacturer to develop new technology is to sell new equipment, and the content producers' only reason for supporting new formats is to resell their content. Besides, I doubt equipment written to the current 2-layer DVD spec will be able to read additional layers. The biggest question is not whether the current technology will be forward compatible, but whether the new electronics will be backward compatible. That's the whole controversy with the new HD-DVD formats -- there's indications that the new hardware may not be able to play current DVDs to encourage consumers to buy their movie collections over again (similar to the VHS->DVD switch). - Saki [faqs] Edited by - Saki on 5/17/2003 6:28:40 PM [Link]

So long as the player is backwards compatible, no problem. But I'm not going to get stuck having to have 2 different players, with two different sets of DVD libraries. [Link]

Then for the year 2010, Sony or Philips will no doubt strike back at us with the "DVD-Grand." That's right, their new improved DVD unit will feature DVDs that store up to 1000 hours of programming!
