My last few purchases of adult dvds have been a big disappointment. Not because of the looks of the women, the intensity of the sex, the camera angles or many other well covered aspects of what makes a good movie. My disappointmet arises from the terrible, distracting, god awful fake noises being increasingly expressed by porn stars in the latest productions. Oh my ..oh my...how annoying it is to hear my favourite female porn stars do that stupid 'sucking through their teeth' noise that is increasingly the norm or the sounds of male stars making those 'Im an evil monster....grrrrr and Im about to come'noises. My question to directors across the board is this....Do you really think that people watching your movies really believe that when your stars are making these noises that we believe them to be real? Watch one of the latest Evil Angels or Private movies with your eyes closed (listening to the sound only) and I can guarantee that images of B movie monsters sucking on extra thick milk shakes through straws will immediately spring to mind and take a moment to count how many times the girl says 'right there....(sucking noise, lips pouted) right there'. Please stop this..please, please, please is it really that hard to get better faking noises from these people?

We don't notice this as we walk around because we have amazing perceptive tricks that let us filter out extranious sound, even while still hearing them. Pecularly this filtering doesn't happen when the same sounds are recorded and played back to us on a TV or stereo. This makes shooting with "real sex noises" somewhat difficult. Once you start really listenning, most places aren't nearly quiet enough to record little gasps and moans without also picking up the sound of neighbor's vacuum, the ambulence siren going to down the street, or the jet flying over head. I don't mean to suggest that this excuses the over-the-top catterwailling that passes for female sexual enjoyment these days. But giving you what you want might be harder than you think. -T.C. |

Everything goes well and by 9AM the shot is in the can. But they've paid for the JimmyJib for the rest of the day, and suddenly it's getting worked into shots whether or not it really fits. Now when it comes time to edit you've got a a film that 90% sticks and handheld, 1% a really great JimmyJib shot that fits in perfectly, and 9% JimmyJib crap. The editor just wants to throw it away, but the producer is yelling "Do you know how much that fucking JimmyJib cost us!?! I don't care what else you toss, the JimmyJib footage stays!" Similarly, shooting on a sound stage make sound about 10 million times easier. Don't want to waste that on little murmers and groans, right? This is costing us money, so lets record "lots" of sound. I'm not saying that's what happens at Private, but it happens in this business all the time. T.C. |
