I know this has been posted before- but the girls debuting from that year were exceptional. I was wondering if there has been any group of girls in recent years who can compare to the likes of Jenna Haze, Aurora Snow, Gauge, Kacey and Hannah Harper? European girls like Monica Sweetheart, Michelle Wild and Jane Darling...these girls are all legit stars who have huge fanbases that still follow them today....whether they still do gonzo or not.
I just don't see the same happening with Teagan or Cytherea in a couple of years. Today, even less with how fleetingly short the career spans of some girls in gonzo. It's just a different era of short (a couple of months) porn careers, I guess? Was that year a fluke? Am I a pessimist?
(edited to add the lovely Michelle WIld, an inexcusable omission)

I actually came in to porn in '04, but as it was in January, some of my first films were started in 03, but my scenes were filmed Jan 04. (but I think I should be able to be classed with the 03 gang!!)
I saw something yesterday that said Angel Dark started in 2001. I know she started out slow and under a different name, so it might be true.
When did Michelle Wilde start?

I agree the class of 2000-2001 was exceptional. I think it marked a generational shift as far as the kind of girl getting into porn. Those girls got into porn as a career choice and not because they couldn't get a mainstream acting career going. They weren't rejects. Those girls wanted to be porn stars and go as far as they could in the business.

That shift in attitude / motivation for girls getting started back then is clear to me now- but what does that say about today's gonzo talent? Girls like Jenna Haze and Hannah Harper got into it for career reasons and they were still involved in the adult industry 4 years later. I just don't see the same happening for any of the recent "it girls." Maybe it's a more realistic approach to porn (a couple of months work before college) or maybe it's a reflection on the state of the industry- short career spans are the norm, becoming a contract girl is more rare?
Anyway, another european girl, Sharon Wild shold probably be added to that class.

You hit it right on the head. Over 800 movies come out each week. Most girls just do one movie and quit the industry. Did you ever see that MTV special called 'Real Life: I'm A Porn Star'. It was only aired twice at most, but the girl that they followed wanted to be in porn and ended up doing 6 movies and then quitting. This after expressing a great deal of initial enthusiasm upon entering the industry.
How many of those girls are still active? Venus and Layla, I can think of off hand. Makayla is retired, as is Jade Marcella.

I disagree. I can see Sunny and maybe Taryn in this for the long hall, but no one else really stands out to me. As long as the money is 'good', girls stick around, but once that changes or if it becomes to much emotionally, they move to the next thing.
This year has been good but there have been so many girls who already left the industry (Mary Anne, Claire Robbins, Stephanie Renee, Allie Sin etc.), it's been a downer as well.
If both Taryn and Alektra stay on longer I may change my mind.
The class of 2002, has some career oriented women as well. Ashley Blue - Avy Scott - Ashley Long - Bella Maria Wolf - Julie Night - Fiona Cheeks - Olivia O'Lovely - Renee Pornero - Alexis Malone - Gen Padova - Angel Dark - Janet Peron - Julie Silver - Flower Tucci
My post was intended as a short list of popular performers who made their debut back in 2000-01. It's based not only on longevity (yes, Gauge & Michelle are now retired, Kacey pops in and out) but also on quality over that length of time. Today, even casual viewers of porn would know who Jenna Haze, Hannah Harper or Monica Sweetheart are. They have all maintained a loyal fanbase over the course of 4-5 years which is unheard of with the average porn career length these days.
1999 April Flowers - Justine Romee - Venus - Layla Jade - Anastasia Blue - Daniella Rush - Cassandra Wild - Jade Marcella - Michelle Raven - Makayla Matthews - Jeanie Rivers - Misty Mendez - Sophie Evans- Devinn Lane

Brilliant observation, dear Laslo. Good catch, Reversible on Nikita Denise (an AVN performer of the year) and Belladonna. They were in that class as well. I saw Nikita Denise at the XRCO Awards this year looking very fit and tanned.
Gauge may be dormant now, but a comeback would still be highly possible, if she so chooses. I think a few months back there was a thread about her feature dancing, etc., and just a month or two ago, when Cytherea decided to do anal scenes, Cytherea came on here and posted that it was Gauge who taught her how to do anal. So Gauge is still in contact with industry people, making her more likely to return than a girl who has reurned to her hometown and/or gotten married and cut her ties to the business.
You guys I'm actually class of 2001. I entered in the industry summer of 2001. Did adult modeling and all that stuff before video came to play since 1999.

I just heard of Hannah Harper just this minute. She's cute - I checked out her Wikipedia profile. You have a great list of girls year by year that I will have to see someday.
That will be considered the golden age of this decade. All of us pretty much know that, and it's has become the standard years in which we judge other talent by.
