Ok, I'm a huge MAC fan, but Microsoft just blew me away with this device. I've been waiting for a touch screen computer like this for years. Apple, you better make a move come January, otherwise I'm considering switching. Microsoft Surface
Too bad I hate watching news....prefer reading it. That's interesting though. I bet they're selling it hard. Now I know why Vista sucks so much - they put all their R&D into this instead.
I have many in my office.... everything from an old G4 tower to a MacPro tower to an iMac, but I always have my 12" powerbook with me. I'm somewhat of a MAC collector. Actually, they all have their different purpose and I'm not the only one who uses them.
I've tried it out on friend's computers. I also have Boot Camp on my iMac so I can check IE compatibility for my code. I just don't like the interface. But I'm very excited about Surface's features!
Macbooks are cool. I have an older powerbook. The only time I feel that the newest is the coolest, when it comes to MAC's, is when you're regularly doing video editing or animation. Otherwise, older mac's and laptops do everything I need it to.
Surface is an interesting gimmick. It looks kinda cool, but from what I read, it's not nearly as useful for personal use, especially as a workstation. I guess this is also why they only sell it to businesses to use as public terminals and similar. Btw, in the future, we won't need hands to operate computers. I do agree that Surface will be used for more commercial applications. I am looking forward to Apple's rebuttle though. I've been waiting ages for touch screen technology to move to tablet pads and tables. I do lots of illustrations and I'm on my computer all the time, so it would just make more sense for me to be drawing or working on a touch screen tablet on the couch or in bed then place it on a table that would hold a larger main frame. Did you ever see the movie "The Island?" I want computers using that technology. Holograms like in "Minority Report" would be pretty amazing too, for certain applications. I just think the current desktop computer is so counter intuitive to how I want to work and I think both Microsoft (with Surface) and Apple (with their iPhone) are working to change the way we use computers, which is very exciting in my world.
I was less than impressed by the video. I suppose there are some applications where manipulating two points at once is beneficial, so some kudos are due there (even though that doesn't seem to be M$ technology), but the wireless stuff had nothing to do with touch screen technology. How many people work closely enough to their screens for touch-screen to be practical? I don't, which means I'd be pissed if M$ tried to make touch-screen the only way I could interact with my computer.
^ Exactly. I don't see this as being that great for home computing. The biggest problem I have with computers is stuff that's supposed to work but doesn't. Or stuff that works great when you first buy it but is useless in a couple of years because the company that made it refuses to update drivers or whatever.
The linked video showed a wall version, as well as the table top, so you're safe in your assurance. This interface seems well suited for presentations, and it may find use in the artistic community, but I don't see it as a particularly good input device, so I'm not sure it will become a standard component in future computers. My computer of the future would feature voice recognition coupled with eyeball tracking. Now that would give the keyboard a run for its money.

(Yes, I really love anime.) I think that's still a little ways away. They'll want to milk the gesturing technology for awhile.
I hate to point out the obvious, but Apple was the first player to hit the market big with touchscreen computing. I own one, it's called an iPhone. I'm sure once Microsoft enters the market, their products won't work, and Apple will also offer products larger than an iPhone, and these will work.
And that means what exactly? They got the tech from Fingerworks in 2005, which they bought. And surely you're aware that touchscreen monitors, pdas and suchlike existed long before iPhone. I'm not sure that has anything to do with it. As I said, it's a limited interface which appears to target a niche market. Voice recognition is a bitch to do. A mouse and keyboard can serve most of the world's population without modification, while VR has to deal with regional accents and idiosyncrasies, and that's without expanding into multilingual support. I'm not sure whether eyeball tracking is ready for prime time, either - haven't really looked at it in a while.
Simply that if people want touch screen computing they won't be forced to buy windows machines. If they go with Apple (or some other Unix) they will like have a reliable touchscreen computer instead of the buggy one they will likely get if they go with Microsoft.

Users also hate any keyboard that has no tactile feedback, keyboards on touch screens being a prime example. I can see how it might work much better than a mouse for drawing though.
If I had to choose between Linux and Windows, I'd chose Linux. I even have a friend who works for Apple and runs Linux on his Mac. In regards to the iPhone, I agree that it's harder to text on there than with other phones.
Touch screens work well with structured input that the computer an anticipate, when the choices are known to the computer and the choices can be presented in an intuitive way to the user. Keyboards still seem to work better for random, unstructured input or where the computer cannot anticipate which of a large number of possibilities is desired (command line usage, writing a paper in a text editor). As for neural input where a computer reads your intent directly - I'm not sure I care to let a machine capable of that near me yet, not until the ghost of Bush is dead & buried, certain to never return. In terms of what neural input could be done in the near future there's actually been good results at tapping the optical nerve and interpreting what the eye sends the brain. It turns out that "seeing" via optical nerve signals is not viable - eyes give junk data which gets turned into useful info via massive post-perceptual processing in the brain - but the technology is nearly there to tell *where* the eye is pointed if there are some high-contrast reference points.
A few points... 1. The video might not have made it clear: Two products are represented here: The MS Surface table top computer and the Perceptive Pixel "wall". Perceptive Pixel is an entirely separate and unrelated company. The PP Wall is crazy expensive, starting at $100,000, but is seemingly extremely capable. The demo videos are *very* impressive. 2. MS didn't invent the touchscreen technology in the Surface; they bought it from GestureTek. They didn't buy the company, but I bet they tried! 3. You can't buy the MS Surface as an individual; you have to be a company to purchase one. I checked about a month ago and the order form showed the base price as $12,500. A 5 user seat of the SDK (Software Development Kit: So you can design your own programs to run on it) was another $1000. Setup, maintenance, etc are additional costs. Not insanely expensive, but cost prohibitive for all but the most crazy or rich consumers. 4. Based on MS's track record of compatibility with 3rd party hardware, I'd be entirely unsurprised to see it not work as shown with a number of consumer cameras and phones. How many cameras are wireless enabled? I can't name any; though I know some storage media (CF, SD, etc) is. Will it work with a iPhone? Blackberry? Random Nokia? My point is simply that the demo is slick, but I doubt the integration aspect of it translates very well to the real world. Dr. P
