Remember those guys? I loved their style of production, lots of editing. I know it takes time, but with the equipment today, can't it be done? The talent costs, so why not use editing to enhance the show. Know what I mean? I absolutely love lots of cuts to other angels and cameras within a scene. Funky music and setups. Drums beating to a stroking and pumping rythm...etc. Lots of ohhing and ahhing from the chicks....how about a split screen occasionaly, one on face and one on penetration so you can see the expression and action concurrently? Porn producers are lazy...come on! Topic Moved by - steph on Oct 12 2007
That Dark brother midget delivered some nice verbal blasts every so often. Comedy. Philosophy. The bizarre. They were the showmen of porn as far as I was concerned. There isn't really a main event like that now, just sideshows. It makes me teary eyed to remember Barbara Doll feeding fish to men making seal noises.

Not to mention they had the absolute best opening credits ever.
I know they're not new new movies, but check out Passolini's movies. Also, somebody recently did a movie with a split screen showing the penetration in one view and the reaction in the other. I think it might have been one of Ethan Kane's movies for TeraVision, but I'm not positive... "I do not as a rule seek advice about food from thin people..." - Jeffrey Steingarten

Someone explain to me why it's so hard to find Between the Cheeks ( 1985 version by the Dark Brothers) I finally found a copy at EricaBoyer.net. No case or artwork.

It's about vhs quality or a little better maybe. I think it was worth the money. I have bought several tiles at Erica Boyer Net and have found them decent reproductions.
Passolini in a former life was "Johnny Jump-Up" who wrote a few of the Dark Bros. classics as well as most of their theme songs. I still have the "Deep Inside Vanessa Del Rio" theme around here somewhere...
Okay, this is a gas! I had this neighbor, we will just refer to him as "W" here. Anyway, after befriending W over the past year he finally told me how it was that he could afford all of the fine furnishings and museum quality art he owned. Now, early on he said that he was a writer/producer who worked on writing Showtime mini-series episodes in the eighties. After we got to be friends he finally revealed his real past. It turns out that he was the other half of The Dark Brothers and had written and produced most, if not every movie The Dark Brothers released. I was like, "holy shit, you wrote New Wave Hookers?!?". He went on to tell me about those days where what they were doing was cutting edge and all about the culture then, and the money that he and his partner, Greg Hyppolite Brown, a.k.a. Greg Black were making. About a month ago W moved out, got his motorcycle endorsement, gave me all of his artwork, bought a road bike and took off to New York at age 64. his parting words were, "Come to Brazil and I will take you and your wife on an Ayahuasca trip into the jungles.". At that he cautioned me, "you might get an anonymous letter soon, don't lick the stamp, you won't return to earth for a very long time, if at all.". LOL!!! I'm sitting on $200 k of ancient art given to me by one of The Dark Brothers! Life is really fucking weird...
^ Sweet. Just to tag on to this thread, I love Gregory Dark flicks -- or, the ones I've seen anyway (except DIMJ 4 -- what a mess). I find his movies to be subversive, problematic, unsettling, and exciting. That doesn't happen too often these days in any genre. Not sure if there ever was anything else quite like a Dark Bros. film.

Greg Dark, his editor at the time (James Avalon, although he used another name back then), and the editor of Adam Film World were the guys who really welcomed me into the industry and encouraged me to start writing some twenty years ago. Good people. Roads To Moscow / Twitter: @roadstomoscow Edited by - Roads To Moscow on 9/9/2011 4:55:10 PM
Dark Bros were the best. Greg Dark got all full of himself and anti-porn possibly to gain credibility in the main stream world he tried to become part of with his rock vids. I think it is a shame he left porn because he was inventive and was the first to really make double penetration and semi-gang bangs a regular part of his movies.
I grew up in the mid eighties ,when all the really crazy Dark Brothers stuff came out . I was in lust (still am)with Shanna McCullough , watching her get her first anal , an airtight Dp no less , in White Bunbusters was something .
James Avalon (a.k.a. Mondo Tundra) as an 80's lad I remember seeing his name appearing in the credits and even I'm still wondering whatever happened to Walter Dark ? In answer to Gore Gore Girl,Greg Dark entered the porn industry with Walter Dark and they would go on to form the Dark Bros and were directing and under contract for VCA Pictures and soon released Let Me Tell Ya Bout White Chicks (1984) shortly followed by their huge success New Wave Hookers. While under contract with VCA Pictures the Dark Bros had their marketing campaign with fliers that showed a wast basket with saying "Porn As We Know Is Dead".Greg Dark entered the porn kind like Rinse Dream (Night Dreams/Cafe Flesh) with a Hollywood background. Also shortly in 1994 right after John Stagliano and his company Evil Angel signed John Leslie (R.I.P.) they soon signed Gregory Dark. Now this is what I heard for a short while Greg Dark was directing Brittany Spears music videos until she fired him. While directing music video it was said that if the subject of adult videos were to be mentioned he " Greg Dark " would not discuss that topic.
^ Thanks for the info. I guess my concept of "anti-porn" is quite different from the poster who mentioned it. What you describe sounds like someone who moved on from porn, and didn't want to be associated with it because it has a cultural stigma.

I like you and enjoy your posts, mcewan, but there's a bit of misinformation in that post that needs to be corrected. 1.) Greg was never "fired" by Britney or any of the other pop stars, like Mandy Moore and Save Ferris that he shot MTV videos for. 2.) Greg's complete music video for Britney, From The Bottom Of My Broken Heart, can be seen in Britney Spears: Greatest Hits - My Prerogative . 3.) He didn't try to keep his "porn past" much of a secret. He directed these music videos under the name Greg Dark. He used some other names on his R-rated erotic thrillers in the 90s, but when the opportunity to shoot for Britney, Xzibit, Onyx and others came up, he signed them all "Greg Dark." Regarding Walter - He exec. produced many non-X "erotic thrillers" throughout the 90s, some with Greg, some without. Unlike Greg and James, he hasn't succeeded (yet, anyway) in reinventing himself for the 21st century. Going slightly OT - The first two R-rated "crossover" movies Greg and Walter made, Dead Man Walking and Street Asylum are fucking AMAZING. I used to tell Greg that he should remake DMW with a better budget and cast... Roads To Moscow / Twitter: @roadstomoscow Edited by - Roads To Moscow on 9/20/2011 1:28:47 PM
The Dark Brothers were two of a kind. There were people who tried to be them, like Rob Black, or wished they were them, like Thomas Zupko, but nobody could match them with weirdness and eroticism.
I have "Psychosexuals" on Vhs. I was always looking forward to the next movie during my most intense porn years. A woman is covered with vegetables, and I think there are clowns involved..anyway always very odd characters. I think the Dark brothers were about to develop porn int new dimensions but then years later many films were just made with a girl sitting on a sofa waiting for 10 guys to come along..as in movies of Brandon Iron. Boring even though the girls were cute. Anyway I loved the weird atmosphere in those Dark movies..you just never knew exactly what was going to happen...being a porn movie, that is quite unusual! I was thinking of another movie where a girl is dressed as a yellow flower or something like that, some fish is involved too..is that from a movie called Flesh? Maybe someone out there knows? Is there any Greg Dark collection available? Remember I saw the first NWH at a porn cinema..maybe 86-87..
The great thing about the Dark Brothers' movies is that you knew that things would get so outrageous, half the time you forgot you were watching a hardcore sex scene. My favourite is DMJ 5, primarily because of the casting of Juli Ashton. The Roman orgy scene, also featuring the blisteringly sexy Jeanna Fine, is an all-time favourite. I'll just go dig it up again...
yeh, movies like that aren't made anymore...maybe som of the early german ggg-movies were a bit like that..but i guess low budget doesn't allow any exciting and weird stuff anymore
There were a couple they did called "The Creasemaster" and "The Creasemaster's Wife" both of which had Tyffany Million in them that I loved and were kinda straightforward in their style. Not really, that much weirdness. Hot sex, though. "The Creasemaster" is easy to find. "The Creasemaster's Wife" is a bit harder. I've still got my old VHS that I need to transfer over.
Does anyone know what the Hustler/VCA Classics subscription site is like? Do they have any of the Dark Brothers stuff on there. I briefly checked out the page and they are claiming that the classic 80's stuff they have is hi-def, is this true? Did they clean up and upscale the classic stuff so it's looks shiny and new?
^^Let me add to what BlackSix wrote and say that I checked a few pages on their site and didn't see any VCA titles listed on the Hustler site. in fact I saw a huge amount of Pink Visual movies on the site while there were many missing Hustler titles. There may be some VCA titles but I don't know which one and I'm sure it's not going to be very good. I mean the site can be joined for 20$ so not a big amount but I'd spend my money elsewhere.
