I've read a few articles and talked with a few producers and hear the same story, that DVD sales are plummeting and that web content is the new King of Porn (unless you want to consider the impact of Web 2.0).
But I read this forum and others and there is a voracious appetite for DVD's over the lower quality web content. Are DVD's becoming a niche market, are sales really dropping so precipitously? Or maybe people in these forums are old dogs who are not up to the new trick, myself included.

Until all websites are offering up all their content at a minimum of 64 hex 480 and 2000kbps then I will still choose DVD.

I think the trend is to have everything it on a hard drive and hook up your entertainment center.
The computer is the tool for the selection of your media to entertain you.
The hard drives will become much bigger in size; in the future you will have a library of 10,000 movies; 250,000 songs and 5 million pictures at your finger to do what every you like. Plus, pay per view sites will let you have access to over 2 million videos to select from by way of the internet. Download will be much faster like 2 to 3 minutes for a 3 hour movie not the slow pace know but you will have to pay for the download.
I agree that in the near future the DVD will be obsolete. Everything will be available to everyone at any time.

DVD Porn will never die. Not anytime soon. I really think that in about 10 years we'll still be seeing DVD porn (instead of just HD and downloads).
Downloadable content will never get bigger than DVD until people can download a movie and burn it to DVD EASILY. In just a few clicks of a mouse. These days you can't even do that without a ton of work and have the quality be very good. Sure, I know they're worried about piracy, but half the DVDs out there don't seem to have copyright protection to begin with. Don't they have a clue that some people just rent and copy them?
I've downloaded lots of movies that claim to be DVD quality, but it's nowhere near that. I don't know where they come up with these claims.
I think in 5-10 years we'll all have a device hooked up to our TV that will download and play movies with just a few clicks of the remote. Porn that is.
They're already doing that now, but it's not as common as it should be. Amazon Unbox is pretty cool with HDMI out to TV! Now all they need is a porn version!
Digital cable has instant access porn you can buy and view instantly, but the selection would be soo much better if the offerering was from an internet site.
Until download speed are faster, I won't even bother. I have 5m cable and I can only download at 100kb/sec? No thanks.

I'm new to porn, aside from the occasional foray unto thehun.com. But since my girlfriend got involved my interest has been aroused. I am dismayed with the quality of video downloads from websites, it is annoying to watch what could be very mind bending (amoung other things) scenes if not for the blur (not to mention the shitty lighting and bad camera work, and jesus, whats with the cut aways to male talent?! But thats for another post). I look forward with rapt anticipation for her DVD releases.
And we all wait patiently for faster download speeds and higher quality resolution.

DVD will be killed by HD-DVD (or less likely; Blu-ray) - not by the internet.
People will still want to relax. and sitting in front of a computer simply isn't relaxing, even if you hook it up to your tv-set, have a cosy arm-chair etc... you'd still fiddle with your computer all the time...

and also the missing thing in this discussion is the impact of internet piracy......i have said this before in other threads like this one.....it is so easy to illegally download porn now, and that must have major effect on the industry....
there is now a whole generation of people who think the idea of paying for porn is stupid becuz it is so easy to get it for free.....
....i have seen myself the file sharing going on, it is insane....people will upload a performer's entire career filmography onto a free hosting site...they will rip and upload an entire DVD and split up the scenes....they will rip and upload the entire content of a website...it is a mad free for all these days
...and actually i believe there are posters on this very forum who regularly illegally download porn instead of paying for it.....

Internet porn is great but it doesn't beat the future of porn when I think HD-DVD or Blu-ray. That's the real quality I want to see. Not to mention the fact that I would think internet companies will only offer streams instead of downloads so you can't own movies and I like the idea of owning movies without goint through the whole DRM thing and stuff like that. I guess I'm more of a porn-collector than a porn-watcher. Watching isn't enough, I want to own!

Talking to a buddy of mine who works in a video store, he says that DVD sales are fine, toy sales are fine, it's the DVD rentals that are waaaay down. It's really hurting business. There's just so many places to get porn online, why bother renting a dvd in a brick and mortar store?

One problem remains : the industry has two standards : HD-DVD and Blu-ray. So it doesn't help. In other times, although BETA was a better product, but it finally did not stand compared to VHS. One standard should prevail and the other slowly perish before DVD disappears.
Does the porn industry still set standards in these matters as it did previously with VHS?
DVD is not perfect, but I prefer to buy my own DVDs instead of renting them. Copies to rent are generally in bad shape as people don't care.

Our DVD sales at our stores are great and up versus last year. DVD rentals are down, but that isn't just a porn problem, that's across the board, as the cost to buy DVDs went down, more people bought instead of rented. People don't like having to return shit by a certain date or time. Plus, you can supplement your sales with an exchange or return program or something Netflix-ish.
DVDs won't be obsolete for quite some time, I think a lot of people prefer to watch their porn on a full size TV, not their cell phone, or computer screen, and you can't download full screen DVD quality stuff (at least not enough of it), the bandwidth is just too limited right now. Plus the "guy" who prefers watching porn on a tiny screen isn't a "regular" customer anyway, and it's the "regular" customers who drive the business. What's the saying...20% of your customers make up 80% of your business.
With the internet you've taken guys who probably weren't paying for porn before and now they certainly aren't paying for it when they can get it free from torrent sites so easily. But the real regular customers are still buying, and I don't know that "sales" are down, just that the margain is razor thin now, much like it is in a lot of other industries, just the porn industry for so long didn't experience that. When your margain is so thin you have to make it up in volume, and no one can say the volume in this industry has gone down. You aren't moving as many pieces out the door as you once were but you've up'd the release schedule AND there's 200 companies moving units now as opposed to 25, so I'd say the porn industry as a whole is selling more movies now than ever before.
People want to see the glass half-empty but man, the product is better now than ever, the fan/star interaction is better than ever, the acceptance is better than ever. If there's any negatives to see it's that the average working man is underpaid and overworked and has less to spend on porn, the religious right is all up in your business and yeah there are some porn companies that wouldn't be missed if they went outta business because of the way they flood the market with cheap crap.

Remember the days when you'd buy a movie with a nice box cover and some stars you liked, then get home and it was so lame?
Then remember when they started having the preview booths where you could watch a movie for a selected amount of time, or watch the porn shops own selection of 20-50 movies?
Im sure you also remember that ticking timeclock wishing they'd hurry up and get to the good parts, and how nasty those rooms were, and how funny they smelled, and having to wear a trenchcoat in case Ms. Anderson your next door neighbor might recognize you since the porn shop just so happened to be right across the street from her workplace.
This eliminates all of that. You pay less to watch an open selection of pretty much any movie your interested in. Even after 5 minutes if you dont like it you can turn it off and select another movie. Also save those extra minutes for another day. Its also discreet. In case you like watching a girl drink cum from a bowling ball, thats your business. Your girlfriend doesn't have to find the evidence in a DVD or video tape and then worry about what type of sicko you "really" are.
If there is a movie I really like I will buy it rather than continuing to rent it digitally over and over. Otherwise there is no need since many sites have a 2000kbs WMA stream.

DVD will be killed by HD-DVD or Blu-ray not by the internet. Also the people that say this don't even think about the amount of people out there that don't have computers or know how to use them. Also I'm not going to haul my desktop to the living room and run cables all over the place. I much rather watch a movie on a disc on my big screen TV in the living. I still watch some VHS tapes that haven't made it to DVD yet.

1+.
And I also want to be able to go back and watch older movies, which may not be possible with streaming, and if downloading is possible, I would probably never have enough HDD space... and I wouldn't want to burn my own HD-DVD or blue ray discs because of the inferior quality on mass-marketed discs and replicators.

How many people in this country can't own porn DVDs for whatever reason, but will watch on the computer?
A conservative estimate might be 100 million.
And 1500 DVD units is considered a good seller?
Why bother?

^It doesn't matter how many people can't own porn DVDs and thus would watch on their computers, because those people wouldn't play a part in killing the DVD as the topic states. They can't own DVDs in the first place according to you, so it's not like DVD has lost them as a customer, they were never a customer in the first place. If a store kicked out all of it's shoplifters would its sales go down? No, because they weren't contributing in the first place. The porn industry's sales can't go down by people who weren't spending money on porn continuing to not spend money on porn, your overall sales only go down when people spend less than they were before. But they can't go up without gaining new customers or getting current customers to spend more. That's just simple math man. ;)
Now you want to talk PROFIT, that's a different thing altogether. The profit is as thin as it's ever been, but that's not really a bad thing. Hell it's our goal as consumers to make our price lower so we can consume more. Everything goes down in markup as time goes on. The trick for the manufacturer is to keep profitable as the markup lowers.

And it may very well be EVERY individual company complaining of a drop, but I find it hard to believe that the industry AS A WHOLE is shipping fewer units. That's if we are just talking pure units. Now they may also be selling them for 1/2 the price they once did, so yeah that would seem like a drop to them, but I don't think that's totally unusual for any business. DVD players shipped for $1000s at first, now they are $30. You put a product in the market, you get competition, the cost to manufacture lowers, you lower the price to keep from being priced out of the game.

It's getting harder to find the stuff I like on the web or on DVD.
But when I do find the stuff I like on the web, I'll usually check it out, download, and make my own DVDs after some video edits to cut the bullshit that slows the action down.
DVDs take up space, and most times the DVDs only have a scene or two I want, so I do my thing and keep the scenes I want and make my own comp discs.
Either way, there's too much porn, most of it generic or boring, or downright crap. Until some specific areas in the market are stocked with stuff I like, I don't, and won't be buying any porn anytime soon. So "new" porn on DVD is dead to me.

The average porn consumer (I don't consider most ADT'ers 'average') could give two shits when it comes to Blu-Ray, HD, BTS or especially owning a box cover.
VOD will dominate porn in just a few years. For the average guy it's just too easy not to go a VOD site, login, watch, wank and log off. No disc that can be discovered by a wife or girlfriend will save many a man countless fights and headaches.
I have to also assume that it's significantly less expensive for the porn companies as well.

VOD might work for people who want to see quick porn to jerk-off but it's useless for collectors like me. That's why I will never use VOD.

These changes always take a little longer than people think - I fully expect to be renting porno thru the mail for the next 5 years easy. 7 years? Oh yea! 10 years? Hmmm. You might be on to something there, but for now the transition to HD-DVD in whatever format will keep the system flowing. For me at least. But even that we are looking ahead 2 years before that is close to the norm. No?
But I don't collect and at some point the living room TV and the computer / internets will be pretty much the same thing for the average person.
But in the end, it's just the medium that brings porn into my eyes. I'd much much rather chat about who will be the first newbie porno queen (i.e. the next hot porn chick) with a birth date in 1990. We are just months away from finding out! Yee-ha?

I hope, that VOD will not replace the DVD.
I like to enter a shop, talk with the "chief"
and other customers. Browse through the covers.
Its just too anonymous, to download something.
I want to hold a movie in my hand.
And I collect originals, I wouldnt pay for a
"legal" copy without a real cover.
I think BLUE RAY DVD will win the next format
war. And there is a wave of nostalgia also,
old formats will come back, at least in the collectors market,
like beta,v2000 and super8. Because some old porn movies will
never be re-released on DVD.

Streaming content/downloads to TV and computer will be the main method of distribution but it's not like discs will disappear.
What are we going to see probably is the ability to choose and buy content for direct streaming and/or downloading to TV. Say you want to see your favourite girl of the time getting plugged in the ass, few clicks on the remote and it is done. If you don't like the scene, you move quickly to another, no need to order new DVDs. All companies will offer their content this way, so the competition will be much more better than it is today, also the prices will go down. It will be like iTunes for porn. Not everyone in the world will have the convenience to stream stuff, so discs in the format de jour will of course exist for them, but those won't be the main source of cash for the companies.

Disc will continue to be big for one reason..privacy. How many guys don't want the wife or g/f to know? So they buy the DVD and hide it and take it out when they're alone. Or how many want to watch the disc in their bedroom or other place. Most "Home Enertainment Centers" are not hooked up in the bedroom, they're in the living room or den. A little unhandy to watch "Milk Enemas #359" when 6 year old little Waldo is hanging around.

The wife won't find the DVD,
but many wives will see the credit card statement.
The electronic trail isn't that hard to trace.
With a DVD, you can pause, slow motion and replay.
If you're doing VOD and paying by the minute,
do you still have that option?
I still haven't found a chair for my computer,
that's as comfortable as my chair in my den.
Plus if you use a laptop and are enjoying the movie,

I disagree, I don't think HDDVD or Blu-ray will really take off.
SACD and DVDA failed. They were better quality than CD, but CD was "good enough" except for a small niché market of audiophiles. The vast majority equates "music disc" with "CD" and will continue to do so as long as the music disc exists. There won't be another, people will call their music discs "CD"s as long as they have them.
Same for video. Except for a niché market of videophiles, DVD is "good enough". The vast majority equates "video disc" with "DVD" and I think the vast majority will continue to call their video discs "DVD"s as long as they have them. I don't think there will be another, video discs will to people be DVDs forever.
The PS3 may help getting hardware out, but I still think the new disc-formats will fail. I think Apple's iTV is a sign of the future, TVs will soon be connected to the internet on their own, you won't need a dedicated computer beyond the TV and the remote. And the next generation of kids, who grow up on the internet, I think will have a very different consumption pattern. They will require for everything to be on-line and updated from hour to hour. The future is on-line.
Time will tell who of us will attain status as the new Nostradamus.

I know there are new optical storage media in the making, that can't be no longer than 10 years away. I think the fight over which format harms the process - if we had a standard format, blu-ray or HD-DVD, then those players would be out there decently priced. Now everybody seem to just sit and wait until these stupid corporations make up their minds...
So it may very well be that HVD or similar will become the next standard. Because as you say, DVD is good enough for most people, most people aren't anal about technology. Including me. I know HD looks better... but I won't jerk off any harder to it...
The kids get everything online, but many of them obsess over DVD-boxes with their favorite tv-series and such, and in that case they will want the best quality possible. Collector items. There will still be money to be spent. And I don't believe convenience is everything to people.

I download movies from websites now and play them on my 27 inch TV. They look great. Of course, I am using a $250 BlackMagic card and a digital to analog converter. This is a high quality card but there are cheaper cards available. If I really like the video I record to DVD for playing in other rooms in the house.
The smart porn producer should be preparing to drop DVD and get into downloads. There ought to be a way to charge a buck or so for the download and another small fee to play the video anytime with the next 48 hours. If the video is really good you make more money on the replays. If not, the viewer doesn't spend an outrageous amount for so-so porn.

^From the point of a site owner, one of the problems at least at this time is that it;s very easy from someone to sign into your site, pay the price to get in on their credit card, download what they want quickly and then go back to the billing company and do a "chargeback" on their card claiming that they had problems, and then the site owner winds up giving up their product for free.

If porn goes all online I believe that:
* Consumers like me would be lost - I rather search for used DVDs than pay for downloads. The reason why I buy DVDs is that I hate online porn. I rather give up porn than sign up.
* Piracy will be even more of a problem, no one buys the stuff, no one even rents the DVD to rip it, someone just cracks the site, rip it and share it. And few people are willing to defend porn in court. Hollywood can sue the shit out of people, but not The Valley.
* Porn will drop in quality, lest not forget, the best stuff is released on DVD (in general) while there's a lot of shit on the internet that may end up on some even shittier comp. The DVD-companies will have to lower their budgets in order to compete.

1. Mindee, the site owner could just come back and say, hey, he downloaded ten movies, he doesn't get a chargeback and he goes on a national list of bad customers.
2. Gunzo, you don't have to drive to the rental stores, which are going out of business anyway. Besides, looking for porn online is as easy as reading this list---which, BTW, is excellent.
3. Privacy is already a problem. Some software companies are registering their product to one computer-only now. And they are having the computer call in as part of the boot process.
4. Quality porn will get viewer recommendations which is a lot better than reading 6 point type on the back of the box.
Porn producers are gonna have to change. Just like the music industry needs to change.

Who wants to see these girls in HD DVD? That will be scary I think. Bad skin and too much cakey makeup all up close and personal. Who needs that? I think the lower res on a computer actually makes the girls look more attractive. They aren't exactly getting Hollywood actress caliber girls in pornography.

Roger Rabbit: I think it's naive to think that one will cancel the other out, that companies will say 'We weren't with it at first, but now we say screw you if you don't want or know how to use a computer, we don't need your money anyways'.
And a file on a computer is WORTHLESS, an original DVD is a collectible.

I buy very few dvds nowadays. I prefer downloading porn on the internet. There are sites with tens to hundreds videos I like and it costs 15-30 dollars. For that price I can get 1-3 dvds from a shop. And there are more and more HD content as well. Often it doesn't look much better than dvd, but other times it's significantly better.

Gunzo sez "And a file on a computer is WORTHLESS, an original DVD is a collectible."
You might as well say a meal at a 4-star French restaurant* is WORTHLESS, an original box of Cheeros is a collectible. Point being a DVD might last as long as that box of Cheeros.
Actually my basic point is that porn producers are going to have to change to survive and prosper. Just like the music business and the newspaper business.
The world of sneaking through a curtain to the back room of a video store is coming to a close. Yes, online rentals will do for a while longer. But I suspect most producers are sensing which way the wind is blowing.
One more point since I am blowing steam: wouldn't you think the female audience for porn would increase with online rentals and much more so with downloads? Any ideas about the percentage of female to male purchasers of porn? The same as Mac to PC owners, perhaps?
*(there is still such a thing, isn't there?)

Non-Adult DVDs have come way down in price in the last year.
Competition Between Blockbuster, Netflicks, Hollywood Video, etc. is so cutthroat that they're offering bargain bins filled with brand new, sealed, A-List Titles at $6.00 a disc.
Recent Release like Apocolypto, Blood Diamonds, The Departed are being sold "Previously Viewed" at $8.00 or less!
Just when the novelty of DVD seems to be wearing off, now the HD Titles are just hitting shelves.

Is there a list of VOD sites available? From what people are saying, this is a popular new way of delivering porn to the masses.
And in regard to HD, other than specialized cameras, are there any licencing arrangments necessary for broadcasting?

Part of the experience for me is that it's a real product, the DVD is like the excellent service in that restaurant... the food can be good on a buffe too but it's still not the same.
I totally agree, but changing doesn't mean abandon ship in this case, CDs and DVDs will continue to sell, the problem with porn is the small pressings that can make it unprofitable, no such issue with downloads.
Renting or buying online isn't much diffirent from VOD, so I'm not sure, I still think a lot of women would be hesitant to pay for porn online.
Anywho, the internet don't have to worry, it will never lose it's porn.
