The other day I was watching one of my favourite scenes from Filth Cums First featuring Bree Olson. Bree plays an innocent girl who comes by to look at a house for sale. She recognises Tommy Gunn as a porn star and gradually becomes more star struck and ends up wanting to make a movie with him and gradually releases her inner slut. We get some great shots of Bree walking about the place and Bree plays the role really well.
And the scene got me thinking that set-ups in gonzo movies are becoming an endangered specise.
It seems that you either buy or rent a plotted feature film or a gonzo flick that jumps straight into the sex.
A few years ago, directors such as Robby D, Erik Everard, Jules Jordan and Manuel Ferrera all made an effort to create anticipation in their movies through a set up of some sort or role play. Robby apart, who now mainly concentrates on features, these directors seem to have moved towards a see girl / fuck girl scenario.
But why bother having a set-up I hear you saying. Why not get straight to the sex?
Just like role play in a relationship, it adds variety for the viewer. It's more than just two people fucking.
Role play allows for people to be either passive or dominant which can add something to the scene.
It builds up the anticipation.
It plays out the viewer's fantasies.
It provides a premise for the sex and the mutual attraction.
I know some of the set-ups have become cliched, like the TV repair man, pizza delivery guy but done intelligently they can really add something.
There are some sexy girls out there at present and some great gonzo but I'm tired of the same old girl gyrates to music or girl slowly strips to music and then guy appears and they start fucking. There is just no premise.
Do any other people share my view and are there any Directors or series' out there which still adopt the set-up to enhance the sex?
Thanks for listening to an old man rant.

I agree that a good setup enhances the scene. The problem, of course, is that the director and editor have to know what makes a setup work. I think we saw them fall off on the other side a few years back, when setups consisted of the female star walking around doing not much more that what I call 'pole poses'.
It takes a little more effort than that if producers and directors wants to make setups a regular part of their work.

I think it's more about how we are all about instant gratification today. The ADD generation. They figure why make us think a little when they can cram one more scene in instead. If they don't hurry up and get us hooked on the sex scene, we might wander away.....

I prefer a set up , always , for those who don't just skip the intro
Though sometimes a set up ruins the scene if it is put in a series with the same performer, for example:
Lisa Ann Mandingo in Mandingo Hide Your Wives
She plays a real estate vendor with an appointment with Mandingo as her client , they have a tour of the house and in the main bedroom they talk about the furniture and what kind of wood it is, then speaking of wood...
-They become lovers-
Lisa Ann and Mandingo in Mandingo Massacre 1
She's waiting in lingerie and a transparent robe pacing around nervous then she hears a bell and goes to open the door ,, it's Mandingo none of them talk he enters then she kisses him passionately and they begun foreplay and then sex
- now they are lovers and continue to date, possibly cheating on their partners-
Lisa Ann and Mandingo in Mandingo Massacre 7
He's waiting for her sitting on a couch half naked she reaches him in thigh high boots with high heels kisses him and then they begin to fuck, harsh fuck and long anal scene
-the lovers are lovers for so long that they begun to set up their encounters with sexy clothes and the sex is harder than before , the lovers know each other limit-
If you watch all the scene in a row or just follow the issues of the series they are consistent , if a set up were put on the following two scene it would have ruined the continuity , though I'm not sure it has been done intentionally

I know what you mean, and I also regret that tendency.
E.g. Everhard's "Jailbait" and "Sport Fucking", Ferrara's "Slutty & Sluttier" and "Evil Anal" are examples of series that combined in earlier volumes gonzo with some sexy story elements and set-ups which added to their appeal IMHO. And they have pretty much abandoned that in recent times.
Joey Silvera still had set-ups in his "Teacher's Pet" series from 2011/12, I am not sure if its the case with Ass Party and Babysit my Ass... Obedience School is one (rare) example for that. among Kevin Moore's work for Evil Angel.

Director Dana Vespoli always put a set up in her scenes.
Sean Michaels does very often
All the MOFOS and especially the Milfs Like it Black series have a set up who is also consistent with the series itself , same actor portraying the same characters with the same problems

I agree that Mofos are doing well in this regard. I think the stars they cast seem enthused about doing a little acting usually, so they tend to sell it pretty well for porn standards.
But Brazzers probably does the best setups though with the directing. Lately they have achieved some very artful staging and photography. Check out Jayden James's recent scene with Sean Michaels and Prince Yashua for Brazzers. That was superbly directed.

Girlfriend Films(lesbian) still adheres to the set up model. The set up is sometimes too long, contains weak dialogue, and displays poor acting. But, they do make an effort and it is appreciated.

Filly Films do that also , though I'm not an expert on lesbian sex I usually don't like it , though I like a lot Lily Cade's and Dana Vespoli's work I have a Madison Young one who looks promising but I have yet to see it.
Hustler's Neighbourhood stories and letters have a set up
Also WCP do a set up for their movies, Combat Zone does often and so does Evasive Angel
Now that I think about it , this might be the main reason I have so many IR movies even though I'm not IR fetished , most IR productions HAVE a set up

I generally prefer "set-ups" (vignettes) but I also like scenes that just have "tease" before the sex. I think overall BRAZZERS has the best set-ups and there are other studios that do a good job of them also. But there are directors who's set-ups are boring to get through and seem to do nothing but make you wait for the sex to start. I'm really not a fan of listening to a guy(s) talk for 5 minutes about nonsense until the girl finally shows up. To me the best set-ups are the ones where there's an actual story happening and the girl is part of the scene from the beginning and not the type where it's guys yapping it up and the girl just shows up.
I can also enjoy tease scenes where the girl is on camera in a sexy outfit or nude just strutting around or posing. For example I'm a fan of scenes that showcase the butt of a girl with a great bubble butt or a body. My fav Kelly Divine and Isis Taylor scenes start off that way. Sometimes those type of scenes go on too long but better too long and I can fast forward than too short and not giving enough.
I personally think that there are enough studios/directors who still do set-ups that it's not an issue for me. But then I tend to watch a lot of different stuff. If I was only watching certain JULES JORDAN or EVIL ANGEL directors, I'd feel differently...even though I might enjoy what they do.

I do enjoy a decent set up and it's a shame that it seems to be getting more and more rare. A simple set up lasting a few minutes is all that is needed, at least in my opinion. It can't be that hard to pull off.
On the other hand, you do have Girlfriend Films who I feel can spend too much time on the set up/plot/dialogue.

I enjoy a good set up more than plain gonzo, the story frames the sex, and that makes it hotter. The problem with features is that the scripts aren't all that good, and most pornstars are limited as actors. That's why I prefer porn with set ups to straight ahead gonzo or full on features.

See what you just said about what GFF now does is why I haven't bought a GFF movie in the last two years. I used to love their movies because the casting, the acting, the plot, the dialogue and the sex scenes were great in most of their movies but I started to see a decline about two years ago and now I don't even bother with them anymore. Which is too bad because I have a ton of their movies but now that is less than two years old.

I thought GIRLFRIEND FILMS were actually features not vignettes/set-ups. I've never seen one of their movies other than a scene or two but from the descriptions of their movies it always sounded like feature length movies.
EDIT: Never mind. I'm thinking of SWEET SINNER films.

Speaking about Mile High I'm looking forward for Mason works to come out, she said they're more featured, Vignettes or even real feature films , I'd also would like to compare her to Nica Noelle on the same ground

There is a thread in most of them that normally carries over from one scene to the next or one dvd to the next but on general each scene is independent of the others.
