Okay fellow directors, after the hate party on this thread, how about a little constructive critisism. Are you wo/man enough? 1) Name one thing that as a rule you think is done poorly in poorly in porn that could be done better without costing another another nickle. 2) Name one thing you'd like to do differently in your productions if you had a bigger budget. I'll go first. 1) I'd like to see more attention to what's in the background of shots. I hate seeing the dirty tennis shoes and/or street clothes the starlet wore to work stuff in the corner of the room where the scene is being shot. 2) I'd like to work in enviornments with better sound isolation. -T.C.

If it isn't skipped altogether (e.g., abrupt cut from girl wearing clothes to naked girl with dick in mouth), it's deprived of erotic interest in one way or another (such as occurring during one of those awful gonzo "interviews," in which at some point the girl is instructed by some off-camera voice to take her clothes off, and she complies with all the enthusiasm of one about to be de-loused.) A gaffer and a lighting truck. This isn't a cost issue so much as a scheduling issue. There are only a handful of lighting guys in porn who know what the hell they are doing and I can't call one up the night before a scene that was put together at the last minute because "so and so" is only available to shoot on that day because she's quadruple booked through March of 08 and expect them to be available. Plus I like to shoot two scenes a day only and that clearly wouldn't be cost effective. I would also like to shoot with a Sony F900, a Chapman dolly and someone to rub my shoulders and mop the perspiration from my brow but that's highly unlikely :) [Link] |

This still needs to be said. 2) Good make up artists. No, they don't have to cost more as long as you give them steady work. 3) Actual locations that are pleasing to the eye. No this does not always have to cost more. I see people bragging that they "shot in a multi million dollar mansion" and the scene still looks like shit. Shooting a scene on a boring looking couch pushed up against a white wall looks like shit regardless of if it is in a one-bedroom apartment or a 10 million dollar house. 4) Oh, and enough with the extreme wide-angle lenses. All it does is make your talent look like circus freaks. Yes, a medium wide-angle lens is often good for gono and I use them often. But ease up on the extreme wide lenses. The girls will look hotter and their nostrils will not look flared out like an ape when you are getting POV shots. Ok, back to editing..... They emphsize camera shake, and don't carry as much depth of field – you might have to check your focus now and then! Something I will do next time that only costs a little and pays good divedends is shoot color charts on the shadow and highlight side of my set up.
