Let me preface the following with a sentiment that I don't like to watch any businessperson suffer and potentially lose their livelihoods due to economic issues. However....
Recessions are like a giant enema. They tend to cleanse out those businesses who are largely marginal at providing value/service to consumers. Those who are smart, creative and shrewd learn to adapt to survive, they learn to compete better and win over customers who are looking for a bargain but still want top-notch service. This has happened in every downturn of the economy in the past and will likely happen again. IMHO, the porn business needs an enema. There is a glut of sameness across the industry, the internet has simply increased the production speed and simultaneously lowered the quality as everyone scrambles to film the same damn scenes with the same damn performers using the same damn formula. And they do it because porn consumers take pretty much whatever is shoveled at them in the hopes of getting that next rush of excitement at seeing their favorite performer doing the nasty.
We already saw that DVD sales were dropping in porn last year. Maybe a recession that takes away a chunk of disposable income will further correct this industry. What we could see is an economic bloodbath, I realize that, and as I stated in my preamble I do hope those who make their livelihoods from the industry don't get covered in same. But at the same time, I think this is EXACTLY what is needed to purge out the flotsam and junk in the colon and give us consumers something new, innovative and truly worth spending our money on again rather than sending everyone to yawn as they search the torrents for another free hit of lust.
Bring it....

I believe porn is becoming a little boring. We really only have a few porn stars that I look forward to watching. What has happened to the hardcore sex, with nasty dp's and facials. Jamie Elle, Jasmine Byrne, Tiffany Holiday, Dillan Lauren, Chanel Chavez, Roxy Jezel & Tiffany Hopkins. You could always count on any of these women coming out with some really filthy sex scenes. Those days seem to be gone, even though some are still performing. Only Adrenalynn, Madison Scott, Asa Akira & Veronique Vega keep my interest because they are so good looking. Maybe that will change again someday.

It's all cyclical when you talk about trends, whether TV, mainstream film or porn. For awhile there you couldn't turn around in the porn store without seeing some new release touting a double anal scene and while it still occurs, it's not something for which fans are clamoring. I think there is still interesting and hot porn being produced. For me I'm not looking for how nasty it can be, but genuinely sexy and arousing it feels for me and if there is a real chemistry between the performers. Plus, I'm more interested in one-on-one scenes instead of groups, simply because one-on-one is what I relate to in my own private life...

Illegal downloads are a great problem, I am no expert how the US companies handle it, but some european and especially japanese companies arent interested at all, if illegal sites are reported. Or they just gave up hope to win this war. But the music industry was very effective to fight illegal downloads. They are also offering more vinyl as ever here in Europe, its a growing market. ( In the figurative sense, this would result in producing betamax and 8mm again, this is no solution for the adult market. )
Recession isnt only killing tumb companies, but also very good ones.
Hundreds of companies produced 8mm porn, but they werent able to offer movies on 3 video systems. ( VHS, Betamax and Video-2000 ).
At this time in 81/82, almost all countries in Europe had a recession. Most companies werent able to get the credits they needed to finance this transition.
In a recession, also good companies can vanish into a black hole, because they too have a lot of customers, who cant pay their bills anymore.

I think caroline is right, downloading is probably a big source of the downturn, along with the overproduction and race to the bottom mentality in the 'industry.'

It's time companies start dropping their prices and they can compensate it by paying the guys a lot lesser. Like I said before they should already be glad to are doing movies with hot girls, it's insane they also are getting paid for it!

I think low prices are already a problem.
Some titles are expensive, new releases of JJ, WICKED, VAH are expensive, so customers are mostly renting these titles, instead of buying them.
But the flood of 2-5 Euro porn is killing the market. Look at this terrible 8 hours DVDs, they only run 6 hours, are interrupted with obnoxious telephone TV ads, have a poor picture quality, are cutted together without care. This trash has hurt the porn genre.
The overproduction is a very problematic issue. I dont understand, why companies produce so much. Some models have made 300, 400 movies. Why isnt it possible to shoot only 100, raise the models salary, but charge a higher price for the DVD ? Also the print runs will double, if the output will be cut back to 50%.
Most of the directors have no ideas at all.
They repeat the same scenes - with the same model - again and again and again and again.
I especially loved the outdoor scenes in dutch or japanese porn, but legal problems may be responsible for this, that they are soo rare in the USA.
The stricter porn laws are also a problem. Much more was possible in the 70s and 80s.
Now even a tame label like "Evil Angel" has legal problems.

Bingo. This is why sales are down more than anything else. File sharing is a problem but that's primarily because there is no compelling reason to buy the legit productions when the rips are of sufficient quality for most AND "sufficient quality" is about all the porn industry cares about in the first place. Pride in the art of erotic film-making, while it still exists, is the exception now, not the rule.
And respectfully, I do take exception with your comment that a recession hurts/kills good companies as well. Capitalism is a self-correcting economic machine. It's based more on the philosophy that consumers drive the value proposition, not the retailers/producers of goods. Consumer demand should always equal (even slightly exceed) producers quality so that there is the ever-present need to improve the quality of goods to grab market share. If consumers become complacent with status quo, it becomes a battle of pricing and availability only. Things like quality suffer. That is exactly what we have seen in the porn industry for some time now and file sharing=cheapest price of all so that's why consumers flock there.
"Good" companies don't get hurt in the long run by a recession....they adapt/improve or they perish. If they are "good" they survive and become more competitive, shedding their bad behaviors and decisions quickly as market forces dictate. If they perish, they weren't a good company. Darwinism=Capitalism, assuming adequate controls to counteract monopolistic and unfair trading practices. Again, let the economic enema begin....it will help this industry and we will all benefit.
A good example is the popularity of the mega-porn sites that produce exclusive content for the web as their first channel, later bundling "best of" compilations for DVD sales. While there is still a bit of stigma for many porn consumers to have a porn site subscription appear on their credit card statement (wifey might see it, after all), this is a MAJOR leap over the older VHS/DVD channel of distribution. For the price of ONE DVD per month ($20), you have access to about 3-5 new scenes per day (using Brazzers, Reality Kings, BangBros as the example) with fresh or established talent, custom-tailored to your particular fetish. Plus the producer of this content wipes out the expense and middlemen associated with typical DVD distribution and eliminates most time-to-market issues. Brandon Iron has even stated multiple times he's got months' worth of future content "in the can" already, letting him shoot at breakneck pace and stock up on future revenues, releasing it as he needs/desires. Hell, if you are one of those bunny-loving treehuggers, you can even validate the "green" observance by releasing on the web versus tying up all sorts of petroleum by-products with DVD manufacture and distribution.
Yes, there are still "collectors" who desire and will pay for the DVD release (artwork, physical media, etc.) But as the industry is proving, there days (likely measured in years) are numbered.

Because it would suck for hardcore fans like me? I don't want only 100 scenes with Trina Michaels, I want 300 to 400 scenes with Trina Michaels. We all have our favorite stars and we want to see them as much as possible, at least I do!
It's not alwasy the same scenes, they work for different companies, directors, actors and in a different settings so you really can't say those scenes are the same!
So my point is: As long as Trina Michaels is making movies I sure am buying her movies and joining the websites she's on!

You have a very idealistic view of capitalism. If I look back at the early 80s, it was difficult or almost impossible for several porn companies to get credits at all, at least in some countries, because banks dont wanted to finance porn at all.
If porn company ABCs main distributor has troubles to pay the bills, or even has to shut down his business in total, because of bankruptcy, ABC maybe bankrupt too. As good as their movies were.
I could enumerate quite a lot of excellent european porn companies that closed down, because they werent able to finance the transition from 8mm to video, or they had warehouses full of Betamax and Video2000 tapes, that nobody wanted anymore.
But back to the present:
Websites are an interesting additional business, but are they really attracting new customers, or only drawing customers away from the DVD market ? I am not interested in "3-5 scenes a day" or " 1 000 000 pics ", I want complete movies, I want an original cover and my PC is too old to play movies.
I wouldnt spend a cent for downloads. I am not interested in downloads at all.
What I really miss are additional merchandising products, look at PLAYBOY Enterprises, a high share of their profit originates from merchandise, like mugs, towels, posters, books, etc.
Ive read in a german economic mag, that many customers are women, who never bought a Playboy mag before, but they buy this merchandise, because they like the bunny logo. Later some try the mag or watch a DVD.
Why is it impossible to buy an official poster with a porn model ?
So-called "photo dealers" are selling bigger photos or dias, but I heavily doubt, that the company or the model will only earn a cent from the sales.
Vivid printed some posters, they sell well here in Europe, even if the motifs arent well chosen, not x-rated and some of their stars arent appearing at all. But these are the only posters you can buy OFFICIALLY from a porn label at all.
Vivids books werent a great success, but the lack of quality seems to be the main reason for this. At least they are trying it. The Vivid calendar is even sold in comicshops here.

Outside of the pornworld, it is not considered cool for a woman to make a living getting assfucked by nameless mopes.
Even in Europe.

As a small business owner myself, perhaps I do. But show me a company that can't adapt from 8mm to something else and I'll show you a management team with zero vision, zero financial discipline to save and/or spend on R&D and a P&L that has them perpetually teetering on bankruptcy for months to years on end.
Companies die because they are mismanaged. They don't die due to recessions. If that were true, you'd have no companies greater than 25 years old. What you are witnessing is the great purging of a relatively young industry (porn) who is just now entering a major economic turndown. There are very, very few strong business owners/operators within this sector. Many will die, only to be replaced by performers who used to work for them who say, "Fuck this, I can do it better myself!" and some will do just that. Moving from one side of the camera to the other (Belladonna is a good recent example, but there are others).
Running a successful business isn't easy, I'll grant that. But many of us view recessions as a means of quickly eliminating the low-cost leaders that proliferate, driving the value of our own products southward as we struggle to offer something different at a higher price. These guys with razor-thin margins are all about volume discounting and a hiccup in the economy will drive them over the edge pretty fast, clearing the landscape for innovators and those with the vision to save for a rainy day.

Recessions can make good companies go under. If you're a small player, you may not be able to manage the storm no matter how well managed your business is.
Many of the strong business owners in the adult sector are only big and strong because they profited off scams, spam, and zero regulation during the early years of the internet. Now that they're big, they have enough money to stay afloat during economic downturns.

Porn doesn't really work this way. When companies have less money they spend less on production and you get more comps. Comps are cheap to produce, cheap for consumers to buy. The downturn in porn will not / has not led to higher quality product (in the DVD market.)
It's also not just about the recession. Obscenity prosecutions and costly 2257 rules have hurt the porn industry.

Hmmm, this may be partly true, but the situation in the USA was very different from the situation in EUROPE. We already had a big porn market in the early 70s, at least in NL and DK, when the US market still evolved very slowly.
We also had 3 videosystems in the 70s, two of this systems were popular and sold quite a lot of units. ( VCR and VCR-Longplay )
These videosystems - excluding prototypes - were never available on the US market.
In the mid-80s, we had 3 videosystems, VHS, Betamax and Video 2000. It still wasnt clear, which system would win the format war.
Grundig/Philips announced new Video 2000 models, but as early as in 1985, they started to stop developing new models. They abandoned this system almost overnight.
Quite a lot of porn companies had thousands of V2000 movies that were almost impossible to sell. This is the reason, that even today, you can get rare european porn movies on Video 2000, for a very low price, but you have to shell out a high price for the same movie on VHS.
But I dont want to turn this into a " History of different video systems " thread.
I think Ive made some suggestions in my reply above. The porn companies have to diversify their products more, they shouldnt produce hundreds of thousands units of the SAME - again and again and again and again.

Costs of obscenity prosecutions and 2257 rules can't explain the problems of couples porn companies.
Steve Orenstein says in the above linked interview: "From my experience, as long as I've been in this business, this is the first time I can say that we're absolutely feeling the effects of the economy."
In the past Vivid was the only premiere company that cranked out comps by the dozen. But I've noticed that Wicked has taken the Vivid road on comps lately.
For example check out the top 25 bestselling Jessica Drake titles on adultdvdempire.
Number one is the 4 hour comp "Wicked Legends Vol. 3" followed by Sin City's 24 hour comp "Never Ending Threesomes", "Wicked Legends Vol. 2" and Wicked's 16 hour comp "Bound and Determined". The first feature is the brand new "Public Service" on position 11. All in all the list consists of 4 Wicked feature films, 13 Wicked comps, 6 Sin City comps, 1 Empire comp, 1 Adam&Eve comp.
I understand that Wicked releases so many comps to compete with Sin City. But in the long run it will hurt Wicked's feature sales.
Digital Playground is the only company that still resists the quick comp cash.

Everbody has to pay much more for energy and food. And the US prices for gas and oil are still very moderate, if I look at the prices in the Netherlands.
I was also astonished, that WICKED released such a flood of compilations in the last months. If you buy 2 single titles, you have to pay more as for a compilation. So dealers have to cut prices of the back catalogue.
Dont think, that this is a clever idea in the long run.

So you think its easy casting a porn flick and the girl should be able to service anyone that can get it up? Interesting.
Why shouldn't the guy get paid? Don't they live in America too? Isn't this the capitalist system? Oh, the guy is just a mangy dog. His life and health don't matter. Dude, you're trippin'.

I know that I can't afford to buy any new porn until I get paid again at the end of the month. There are dozens of titles on my "to buy" list, and very little money for me to do it with.

Due to a confluence of events, I'm currently in money-saving mode (maybe I just got freaked out by a recent credit card balance that I decided to pay off in full rather than spend one more dime padding the pockets of that huge bank with stupid fucking finance charges!). I'm not buying any new porn, and I've pretty much stopped renting from my local smut shack. I still rent from BushDVD, but that's a drop in the bucket. I estimate I'm saving about $200 a month.
I'm now rediscovering my porn collection, and it's wonderful. I'm re-watching scenes I haven't watched in a long time, and they're almost like new. I wouldn't be surprised if others are doing the same. All it takes is for folks to collectively decide to conserve, and it has ripple effects on every sector of the economy, including our beloved porn industry.
I agree with LubeNLuv that most recessions are a good cleansing process, but with the current trends to merging, free trade and offshoring in business, I fear that many jobs are already gone, never to return to the States, and I'm talking about white and blue-collar jobs. My own job is probably safe, but I may end up having to deal with other parts of the company being offshored, and the resulting headaches and nuisances associated with same. Ugh. Makes me want to save even more money.

Thanks mug-glazer for that bit of common sense. No frikking way would I do this job, which risks my (and my girl friends) health/life, and the stigmas/closed doors attatched for free. Also, sex scenes are not the joyous dating service event that you are fantasizing about, where most female talent cant get male talent cock in their asses fast enough, Ramsey. There are a billion threads here that expound on that. At the end of the day, its work, and male talent are held to minimun professional standards, so that you may enjoy your scenes with Trina. Even not noticing the male talent in the scene if that is your prefference is a skill set in itself. I did very well with the ladys before porn. There is a small handfull girls I'd work with for free anyway (trina being one of them incidentally), but Id be ridiculously selective in my scenes Id do.
Also, juha is correct. Pornography recession-proof ? is a good thread on this.

Good article. I'm not seeing so much of a slowdown on the retail level, but my store is located in a military community that's populated by a lot of people that are separated from their partners due to the war.
One angle the industry consistently fails to consider is the impact of female consumers on the market. This is reflected in the type of product that's mass-produced, in the merchandising and in the economic analysis. In the past few years, women have been purchasing porn more and more. That's helped boost sales overall. In addition, more women are tolerant of their partners' porn viewing, and many men's purchasing habits are out in the open.
Women are much more likely to view porn as a luxury, rather than a necessity. We roll porn purchasing into our overall entertainment budget, which includes book-buying, concert-going and mainstream cinema attendance. When times are tough, when food costs are higher, energy bills are higher, and it costs nearly a full day's pay just to commute to and from work every week, porn is likely to be the first entertainment option that's hacked from the household budget.

I too have recently curbed my porn spending, and having consequently dipped into the shallows of my collection as well, one fact has become all too clear.
If my viewing consumption can be compared to a gluttonous high horsepowered V8, it's similiar to having a personal oil tanker adrift just offshore, brimming with sweet crude.

This might be a bit off topic but I had to comment on this. I find t his amazing. Almost refreshing to honest. I often find myself jealous of male performers. Especially guys that do many scenes with black women because I'm almost exclusively attracted to black women. (like Tyler Knight in Badunkabounce with Angel Eyes )
It seems unbelievable to me that this can seem like work so when I hear people say this, I have trouble comprehending it.
Maybe Tyler can elaborate on what part of this actually seems like work.

Me saying that at the end of the day it's still work is not negative or positive. Its just a fact. While I find enjoyment in my work, and satisfaction of doing my job well, there are many people in all walks of life that hate what they do for a living. Every profession brings its unique set of challanges, and I, like anyone else in any other vocation have good days, and bad days at the office.

Even on the great days, when everything is going perfectly, I still have to be cognicent that I am in fact on a set, and not at home, and I have to deliver a performance worthy of if the consumers hard earned money. That govenrs what I do and do not do on camera. I have no such restrictions at home.
Digression ...
Think of a stage actor that puts up the "fourth wall" in front of the audience (in my case the camera). Even in the most inspired acting performances when the actor looses himself/herself in the role, they are VERY aware of the audience (camera in my case)at minumun to keep the action playing to the people who pay to see the performance. Heh....of course, gonzo has moved the 4th wall behind the camera when there is interaction with the director during the scene (like talking to the girl during a tease, ect.) but then the shooter becomes another character in the scene. The wall is still there.

There is some good speculation as to why porn sales are down. There's merit in some of these posts.
I probably own one of the larger porn collections of anybody here. Something like 2750 VHS tapes and another 1250-1500 DVD discs. Many were given to me I certainly didn't buy all of them.
I used to rent 2-3 videos 2-3-4 times a week. A video store is so close to me I can put a golf ball on my front lawn and hit their roof with a 5 iron. I rented somewhere along the lines of a video a day if you average it all out.
There were video stores I'd visit depending on where I was during the day. That way I'd find most of the titles I was seeking sooner or later. There was about a dozen I frequented. I'd buy the DVD's used or buy them wholesale if I really wanted a title.
I haven't rented a title in August yet and I rented a couple in July. I look at the 25 new videos put out on Wednesdays and Fridays at the local store and nothing much interests me.
I admit I like to watch anal scenes but I'd rather watch hot vaginal action than boring anal. The anal these days is boring and the vaginal videos aren't any better. I can watch MILF videos but there's way too much of that on the shelves now. I prefer the girl-next-door look and porn is full of ladies with bad boob jobs, petro-chemical hair, tattoo's and piercings--things I try to avoid. I'm fond of saying that one man's trash can be the next man's treasure but I'm not finding any nuggests out there these days. Apparently, I'm not alone.
Before, I could always fall back on Brazilian porn and Euro porn but that well seems to have dried out too.
One of the good things is that I've been fetching boxes of porn videos from my garage rafter stash, finding old tapes and old favorite ladies.
I'd say that my video renting is down about 90%--maybe more. It's bad fare out there more than anything. I can afford to buy and rent videos to my hearts content. I can find little worth renting and even less worth purchasing.
As a personal note, I like ladies like Paulina James. Cute, fun to watch, and she even did an anal scene or two. Just like Sunny Lane and now Alexis Texas. That's good news but it's too little. Evelyn Lin is another cutie and she supposedly did her first anal in 2 years. It was for her website and I never will join a website.
Maybe if the guys who run Captain Stabbin would release their videos on DVD, fare that's never been found in video stores, that would kickstart porn again.

This thread is very informative and educational.
The credit crunch is hitting hard and it will probably hit harder. 3 months ago my bank called in my overdraft which meant I had 28 days to clear it, meaning I had to work 70+ hours overtime in 4 weeks to clear it, and now that I have they have cancelled that function of my account. Also I've had to clear my credit card debts. Therefore, alas, with these amenities no longer available to me I no longer have as much disposable cash every month to play with. Now, I'm not bitching, just stating a fact, I can still afford to live, and still afford to partake in social activities with friends on alternate weekends, but, porn purchasing, for now is on the backburner.
I agree with people on here re: the overproduction of porn nowadays causing a flooding of the market and some scenes finding themselves on several DVD's. I used to purchase a lot of PRIVATE videos as they used to have exclusive girls but this is now no longer the case.
In a couple of months when I do start purchasing porn again I will only buy from studios where I can see trailers before I buy. This seems common sense, and good business sense, to me.
There is an abundance of free porn available on the net mentioned on this thread, and other threads, but, call me old fashioned I do like to hold and own the physical disc of material, call me weird, i dunno, but i do, like I like to own a CD of my favourite artists as opposed to an MP3 file.
Anyways, nuff said.
I'm boring myself now.
