i asked Tricia about this a while back and she said:

"We're charging double for the VHS, and the VHS is retailing for about $60. So the DVD will be double your normal DVD price, and we're assuming that retailers will be charging $55 - $65 for it."

Man...that is more expensive than your most fully loaded Criterion disc....well, lets hope 5 Star stocks up...their average cost for a EV disc is $22.99..so they should be in the $45 to $47 ballpark....

And the companies wonder why people dub tapes. $60
for a porno tape. Get real. Jim Cameron produced
"Titantic" for 200 million and that film didn't
sell for anywhere near that price. Does the porno
tape come with a free BJ?

The Fashionistas is a double VHS release. The second tape is not just a bunch of crappy extras and BS. It's good stuff. What's worse: A) shooting all of the content at one time and releasing it as Movie Part 1 this month and Movie Part 2 three months down the line; or B) shoot and produce something better than 10 average pornos combined, release it all at once and charge a fair price for it?

And how many times that 200 million did they make back in the theaters and cable TV rights before the movie ever made it to video?

A DVD like Titanic is also expected to sell millions of copies. Therefore a significant profit can be realized with a small markup on each copy. On top of that, with the large number of copies being sold, the percentage of the fixed costs that end up being applied to the cost of each individual unit is miniscule.

Even a DVD like Fashionistas will probably sell less than 10,000 copies. It's a 4 hour and 40 minute movie with extra footage. They could have easily released this movie in two parts and nobody would have complained about the cost.

Actually I think what is throwing some people off is the other 2 disc sets out there that were only a little more. What they don't understand I think is that unlike those sets the movie alone in Fashionista's takes up 2 disc's. I don't remember is Tricia said there is a third disc for the extras or not but I think so.

Therefore I look at it as getting 2 movies in one set not just 2 discs so it will be worth the cost no matter how much it is.

Harsh, but it DOES have a point. No matter how good the movie is, that´s TOO expensive. I won´t ask for the budget of Fashionistas, but it really was shot on 35mm as the brazilian cover states?

BTW, The Fashionistas is easily the most pirated title in Brazil. I used to see the dupes on only a couple of x-rated only store, but recently I found it, with a PRINTED cover, on some mainstream stores that do carry porn. If the person who´s making the dupes is the person I think ít is, I guess there may be well over 1,500 dupes in circulation by now.

THE FASHIONISTAS brazilian release on VHS will only happen in january. No word on a DVD version, but the "brazilian" Evil Angel still don´t trust on the media. So far, since the invention of the DVD, they have the whooping amount of 13 titles on their catalog...

I don't understand why people are complaining about the price. You have to pay for quality, you don't like that than go buy some cheap crappy Vivid title!

Evil Angel stands for quality and I don't mind paying a little more for their titles because it's worth it.

its because of the print run that I mentioned Criterion discs...they release mostly high brow, niche titles....in a lot of cases they have to licence these titles out plus they usually do massive restorations on the films themselves and the average two disc set from them retails for around $38.99...I have no doubt about the quality of the movie The Fashionistas or the effort & care that is going into its DVD release and I will probably buy the set but there is a slight disconnect when you think about spending 40 bucks to get a DVD of 8 1/2 or Notorious and spending 60 bucks to get a copy of The Fashionistas on DVD....

I found the VHS for $39 near the Port Authority. I imagine I'll be able to find a discounted copy (non bootleg) pretty easily around town.

Yes, but even with Criterion discs, the movie has already made back the production costs with it's theatrical run and cable rights. The home video market is all gravy to them.

Evil Angel doesn't have access to a theatrical or even a cable run (like a Vivid, VCA or Private movie might). All of the production costs must be made up in video/DVD sales.

My guess is that we won't be paying double the price for a standard Evil Angel DVD for Fashionistas. I know for a fact that at my local video store, they charged the same markup (in dollars, not percent) for the VHS version of Fashionistas.

So even though he paid twice as much for Fashionistas that he normally pays for Evil Angel titles, he only made the same amount per copy sold. However, I also know that he sold a lot of copies, so he still made some good money on this movie.

Yes, but why? Because no one wants their movies (highly unlikely), or because Stagliano don´t WANT to sell his stuff to cable?

Some EA movies - Fashionistas included, and almost all of John Leslie´s output - can be easily re-edited to a cable version.

FYI, EA titles ARE shown on cable in Brazil.

Oh, and since Fashionistas was shot on film, I don´t know what prevents it to be released theatrically - at least on the raincoater circuit. Face Dance was shown theatrically in Brazil as well.

But not TO Criterion.

Criterion does not produce the movies, they just license ´em for DVD releasing (and prior to that, Laserdisc). Criterion isn´t even allowed to sell their product outside the US of A.

In the case of The Fashionistas, the movie belongs to John, so he can exploit it as he wants - including showing it theatrically outside the USA, where there´s STILL chains of raincoater cinemas (mainly in Europe), putting it on cable and all sorts of things. It´s not a movie that will die six months after the VHS/DVD release (what would be a waste, btw).

Same thing in Europe. Satellite/Cable channel XXL regularly airs John Leslie and John Stagliano titles. This month alone, they aired a couple of installments of The Voyeur and the Stagliano classic Wild Goose Chase .
The question is who is responsible for the selling of the rights? Me thinks it is the French distributors.

Three problems that are introduced when selling product or rights to distributors outside the United States: piracy, shoddy product (such as a distributor mastering their own version of the movie for DVD), and undermining of domestic sales (foreign distributor buys copies meant for overseas distribution but instead sells it to customers in the U.S.).

In short, it's about the integrity of the product rather than the possibility of lots of foreign sales.

First - about why we decided on charging a 2-movie price for The Fashionistas:

1) it's longer than TWO porn movies from any other porn company except Evil Angel. For us, it's the length of two movies.

2) it has a lot of fetish and S/M elements. These genres are often considered specialty and have a higher price structure.

3) For the DVD, the movie is the same length as the VHS - 4 hours 40 minutes. PLUS, there is a 3rd disc, which almost ANOTHER 4 hours of extras. We were proud of the VHS, but weren't overly concerned if we lost a few sales on VHS because of price, but for the DVD, we are even more sure that the product is worth every penny.

the American porn cable stations and hotel pay-per-view chains don't want Evil Angel's stuff.
Why? Beats me, but it's OK, because when they did take a couple titles a month, they chopped it to shit. I watched a few, and couldn't believe it was an Evil Angel movie to begin with.

As for foreign cable, when we sell to individual foreign territories, almost every territory has their cable rights included in the deal. So that doesn't get extra money for us.

As for theatrical, foreign wouldn't add up to much. Domestic doesn't do anything anymore for X-rated theatrical. We're considering doing an edit on film. But that costs more money, and it would only be to enter it into festivals. I'm not even sure how much more money we'd have to spend to cut the negative and do a film print and all of that, but it's not cheap, so we may not even do it at all.

Now, the Brazilian market can barely afford our releases at all anymore with the current economic situation, so we're concentrating more on selling individual DVD pieces into foreign territories rather than worrying about contract rights.

There will always be people who make individual copies for themselves and friends. It's the big dupers that cost us the big money.

That´s not true AT ALL. Somebody´s feeding you the wrong information.

The problem is that Stanley´s still thinking in terms of the soon-to-be-extinct VHS rental market and doesn´t want to touch the REAL gold, namely the direct market represented by the magazines that comes with a "free" DVD.

(In fact, he actually thinks that this market is "negligible", and somebody needs to crack his skull open and put the correct notion in his brain. Me, I would love to crack his skull open, but not to give him any ideas... )

If a shitty mag with a shitty porn DVD sells about 10-15,000 copies M O N T H L Y , then imagine how much a mag with a BUTTMAN DVD - even a catalog one - will sell?

You don´t need to go much further to see how well the brazilian EA DVDs sell. Just go to their homepage. The majority of the titles are SOLD OUT.

SOLD FUCKING OUT .

If that´s not a sign that this market has a future, then Stanley is far more stupid than I always thought he was. And trust me, IMO, Stanley is EXTREMELY stupid.

Of course, Stanley and his army of ass-kissers are too incompetent to make a decent magazine, let alone market it with a "free" DVD, so let things stay that way. At least MY mag can go on and on without any competition...

(And the best thing is that the guys from the brazilian Buttman magazine can stop ripping off MY articles...)

If you have ANY idea about how BIG the dupe market is around here, you´ll know how much money you´re losing in Brazil. And in the last two years, the pirate guys are concentrating their efforts solely on Private and EA stuff (with some shelf space for Extreme as well).

Actually, I shouldn´t be giving you this kind of info. In fact, if the brazilian branch of EA went kaput, we would completely dominate the market in the very next day, kicking even Private´s ass.

Problem is, I like YOU, Tricia, very much, I also like John even if I don´t know him as well as I wanted to, and I would suck Joey Silvera´s cock if he wanted me to (even if I´m not gay), and even if I´m currently fed up with porn in any shape or form, I STILL can watch any scene shot by Joey or John, pop my load and relieve my tensions. So there.

Tricia, can I just ask what the 4 hours on the third disc will consist of. The only stuff I can think of is behind the scenes, interviews etc. I would be interested in the title if the third disc had some good lengthy trailers of some of EA's upcoming releases as well as their older releases, extra scenes. I can't really see anything else that would make this a worthwhile purchase for the price.

I am only 1 hour and 13 minutes in to reviewing tape one of Fashionista's and I personally can't see anything that would stop me from getting this movie. Belladonna's strip sequence alone is worth $60.

I think there will be a lot of extra footage shot specifically for the dvd release (shot on DV cam).

I love to see alternate angles of a good scene and hope the 3rd disc contains a lot of this.

Will there be an audio commentary track ?

On a related note, is there some kind of EA trailer disc available, like Private do their Sampler discs? That is the one obvious extra that EA don't often put on their discs (unless I've just not seen enough EA discs!)

I would love to buy a trailer disc from EA, with say 3 minute previews of a few dozen of their films. Sometimes screenshots just don't give me enough of an idea whether to buy a title or not. And here in the UK we don't have any rentals so buying is a gamble.

Hi,
well, I just saw that gamelink has it priced at $49.95 which means Empire & 5 Star will probably have it the 42 to 45 dollar range, which I think it is more than fair.

The 3rd disc is 110-minutes of making-of, 10 minutes of bloopers, 10-minutes of Friday's and Taylor's castings and initial wardrobe talk.
45-minutes of extra sex.
The fetish menu, at about 40 minutes.

There is an audio commentary with 4 of us at once: John Stagliano, Taylor St. Claire, Belladonna and me.
We skip part of Kate Frost's scene and part of Caroline Pierce's sex scenes, but other than that, we talk through the rest of the movie.
Hardz - there are some alternate angles in the making-of, shot on DV by me. Mostly, they show wide angles from far away of the film camera crew in the picture and shooting the stuff.
But nothing for alternate angles the way Vivid did.
The extra sex is all stuff that was on film and isn't in the movie. A couple extra positions from the sex scenes, and few things: extra time of the positions that are in the movie.
There's even a little bit extra of Belladonna's dance tease.

Trailers: Right now, John Leslie is the only EA director consistently doing trailers. It's a constant debate at EA whether we should do trailers for our movies. Still haven't made a decision.
We've been considering for a long time doing a sampler DVD of some sort that would be included for free with an issue of the Buttman magazine, but until the editors start doing trailers, we don't have a whole lot to put on there...

Hi Tricia,
Its looks like Fashionistas is a labour of love and that everyone involve has put a lot of effort behind it, despite the higher cost it seems the production cost and the quantity as well as quality justify this. I will be getting this title.
Interesting to know that you are showing us your camera skills in the alternate angles, but who did the actual filming in the movie? Is their one or more camera operators and could you give us the load down on any particular scenes that been filme by you?

Thanks

highlander - thanks.

Well, nothing at all in the movie was filmed by me. A 35mm camera (or any FILM camera) is very technical and needs an operator who knows what they're doing.
There was one film camera on set on most days, and John Stagliano and the Director of Photography Don Crane were the camera operators. Don shot all of the dialogue, they took turns during the sex scenes.

As for what I videotaped for the behind-the-scenes, it's almost everything where you don't see me. A true tip-off is when you hear a female voice from behind the video camera. I was the only non-wardrobe, non-makeup artist female on crew.
All of the behind-the-scenes sex shots were from my video camera.

Thanks

I videotaped a lot of the sex. But it's cut down MUCH shorter in the behind-the-scenes.
