First, there was the news about the Max Hardcore and Extreme Associates persecutions. This seems clearly intended as A Political Message to the industry: watch your step! Then there were several several people complaining on a CNBC special last week about the parlous state of DVD sales. One guy blames all his problems selling DVD's on internet piracy. Someone thinks it's just the recession. Another is sure that DVD's can continue to be sold if the content is just super-spectacular enough... and the price be damned! Finally, I discovered some loops that Kylie Ireland (a long-time favorite) had apparently done for internet only. Look, I'm still not crazy about porn delivered through the internet. Online video seems mostly small and grainy and with audio quality straight from Fisher-Price. On the other hand, the *content* variety and kink has already surpassed what I can get on DVD. Let me say that again: I can't even BUY Kylie's more outrageous clips on disc! It seems like DVD creators are being slammed from different directions by utterly opposing forces. I would buy Kylie's less-censored product on DVD, but the government may put producers in jail for selling me that extra-spicy DVD. (You can only censor things you can hold in your hand, apparently.) My question to the thoughtful on this forum is: under such conditions, what becomes of the adult DVD trade? Clearly, this is a case of a new technology shaking up an existing industry. But how will this one play out? Will internet and DVD forge out symbiotic zones, like TV eventually did with Hollywood? Or will internet porn just kill DVD altogether, like radio killed vaudeville? Are my DVD's headed for the same place as LP records and 8-track tapes? I don't know the answer -- but it looks like I might have to get off my high-horse about owning everything on little plastic discs...  [Link] |

Most websites now are DVD content based. As soon as a DVD is released, you have the option of downloading the whole movie or separate scenes. I seem to recall that some companies just gave up and went out of business; others soldiered on, trying to keep doing story porn with a fraction of their previous budgets. But mostly there was an overwhelming tidal wave of wanna-be's with a camcorder and ambition, churning out piles of utter dreck. (Let's hear it for "Leisure Time!") If producers can make stuff with less overhead cost than physical DVD's and which can be more daring and marketable because it's apparently less subject to the whims of Johnny Law, then where will the smart production money go, do you think? (BTW, about retail stores NOT going away because of mailorder? Ask the people who used to have bookstores about Amazon.com!) [Link] |
