We are living in it right now IMO. I grew up in the 80's so I'm well aware of that era, and I've viewed some of the "classic" stuff from the 60s and 70s (most of it is horrible). None of it compares to porn today. Today you have so many more stars, so many of them are hotties (many post on this forum like Sasha Grey, Teagan, Bobbi etc), so much more variety of niches for every little perversion that we all have and has always existed but was kept secret - showing the world there is nothing wrong with enjoying them. I would never trade the porn of today for the porn of the past.
I completely agree. I'm really anxious with HD on the rise how porn will look dated in the next 10 years. We all know what it's like to rent "ancient pornography" and really see the difference in hair, boob jobs, makeup, cinematography, etc. Porn is definitely progressing into something quite interesting and I'm anticipating more and more what will become more and more mainstreamed in the industry.
I think its referred to as the "Golden Age" not for its production value, vast amount of female porn queens, or even the sex acts themselves. Its the Golden Age of porno that broke the social taboos, the acceptance, even the smut laws to bring pornography it into the mainstream. Out from the underground and the 'seedy' parts of town so to speak. Liken it to the first Rock and Roll musicians/producers in the early 50's. That music compared to todays music is without a doubt different in all aspects. Yet it was ground-breaking.
Me too; I grew up on Golden Age porn. Smaller number of titles and performers meant that fans could almost keep up with every film or studio or performer. Most videos featuring your favorite performer would likely deliver at least 75% satisfaction (judged against overall market offerings and viewer expectations). Today there are hundreds of performers and many many studios and anybody can be a director/producer. So, today you are lucky to have 10% satisfaction from any title. Yes, there seems to be a niche for every little fetish thing. But much of these are from opportunist producers who are good at marketing but ignorant about the particular fetish, or don't care about getting it right. So I agree that today is the Golden Age in terms of abundance of DVDs and abundance of performers in all flavors. But for the discriminating consumer, we must wade through a ton of mediocre/misleading stuff to find the above-average goodies.
The Golden Age of porn wasn't the 80's. It is the very late 60's through the 70's. There were no 'videos'. It was all on film,16mm and 8mm.

There was nothing "Golden" about having to watch porn in a public theatre - constantly changing seats or getting splashed on by the raincoater sitting behind you.
I think both is true. Porn gained reputation in the 70s. We had the waves of liberalization in the late 60s-late 70s. Damianos "Deep Throat", surely overrated as a movie, but all of the newspapers wrote about it. It played an important part in the legalization of porn. Porn received media attention. Not only "bad press", like today. Many good and excellent movies were released. Their wasnt this huge output, every big porn production was an event. It surely was a golden age of porn. Now WICKED puts out more excellent porn movies in a year, as were released in the whole 70s. But because of the big flood of cheap and stupid porn, it didnt receives the same media attention. Feature movies are also tamer and dont break taboos anymore. Partly, because these taboos dont exist anymore, partly, because big CEOs are running the company, the dont risk anything anymore.

I can't stand porn "features". If I want to watch an erotic film I'll rent one or I'll watch an actual feature film. This is why I never watch Vivid films no matter how hot their star line-up is. I've never watched a Jenna Jameson movie before. I prefer the simpler stuff. Cute girl sitting on couch. Camera man asking them personal questions (where are they from, what type of sex have they done and enjoyed, how old they are, why did they get into the business). Then the guys come it and the action begins. Porn is there to get off, to be dirty, and fun. Spare us the poor acting, transparent "drama", horredous plots in porn.
I don't understand what people mean when they say porn has become mainstream. Is it more accepted yes but, it isn't mainstream in my opinion. What is "mainstream" in other forum posters opinion? Maybe I should start a new thread about this.

I don't know if any director working today is making films as good as Cecil Howard, Armand Weston, Alex De Renzy, Robert McCallum, etc. None of these directors films are poorly shot or acted. These stock responses pop up regularly by those who have never bothered to actually watch what they are commenting on. You're right that it's only mainstream in terms of economics. There is a large market buying and viewing it, probably larger than ever before. Porn is everywhere and everybody watches and enjoys it. However, it will never be accepted in society. It seems we're destined to pretend that it's wrong. Who knows, maybe when the shackles of religion are removed it won't be so problematic. I have to say, I've been to the Red Light District in Amsterdam and I wish there was one in every city. Whether it's porn, prostitution, or kinky sex between two lovers. What's the big deal.
