^ It's usually male-dominated societies who try to control sexual behavior of both men and women. Or in other words, it's the men at the top of a patriarchal society who make the rules and the laws controlling sexual behavior. Men are very visual in their mental sexuality, which is very different from the verbal-based mental sexuality of women. And that's why men trying to control sexual behavior of people in their society have missed and ignored the verbal sexuality of women. Men have a blind spot in much of verbal sexuality. The author seems to have only just stumbled across the fact that women read erotic literature and men dont. I would be totally down with it if every female over 18 read erotic literature. It's not an issue for me. Is the book she mentioned even classed as adult content or can a child walk in and buy one?
The double-standard when it comes to erotic entertainment is real. Decades ago, I read my sister's Cosmopolitan at the beach, and was shocked to find it was far dirtier than Playboy, yet Cosmo is sold in every grocery store in America, without a hint of shame, and I certainly never sat at the beach reading Playboy. Whatever is behind this, I think it also accounts for the fact that Lesbians are seen as hot, while Gay men are ... fags.
^Cosmo is a thousand times worse for women than Playboy because Cosmo pretends to be a magazines that educates it's readers with poignant stories, celebrity interviews and articles on how women can improve every facet of their lives but it's in fact a magazine that does the exact opposite. It makes the vast majority of women feel inadequate by interviewing celebrities that don't live a normal life is and all the articles on how a woman can improve her life can only make women think that their life is a miserable one because they aren't doing this or doing that. Another reason why Cosmo is so much worse than Playboy is that anyone can buy a Cosmo but you have to be 18 to buy a Playboy. Playboy is basically a magazine that has nude pictures of women and a few interviews and articles on mens's toys. Lesbians are hot only because hetero men that watch porn want to see two women have sex together. Gay porn isn't hot because non-gay men don't want to watch two guys have sex together. That's it that's all. There is no secret porn conspiracies against gays. If there was then there wouldn't be such a huge gay porn market. Now there is still a large percentage of the population that has an issue with gays but it isn't limited to men but women as well. I don't know if you remember hearing about a group of women who targeted JC Penny's because they had Ellen Degeneres as a spokeperson. They lost but they still went after her because she is a lesbian.
This is really an issue of literature vs. visual media. I can read pornographic novels in public, and students can have them assigned in college classrooms. I cannot watch my porn movies in the same locations.
Yeah I agree with that. I remember when I was 12 at school we were allowed to bring in our favourite posters into class and put them up on the wall, and I remember the boys in the class brought in posters that were sexually visual compared to what us girls did. They brought in the models who where in their underwear, while we brought in our favourite popstars at the time, and I remember when us girls complained about what the boys brought in, our teacher who was male, told us girls to fightback by bringing posters of sexy men. So we did and the boys didnt like that, so the teacher told them too bad. If you want pics of scantily clad women on the walls, then it was only fair that us girls had scantily clad males on the wall also. I have never forgotten that.
^ I suppose, it makes sense that people with different sexual interests should keep their sexuality to themselves, unless they are trying to make friends with someone they like. Heterosexuals are normally annoyed and turned off, when they see homosexually suggestive pictures on public display. That's why pictures of semi-naked women on public display annoy women, unless these women happen to be lesbian. And that's why pictures of semi-naked men annoy men, unless these men happen to be homosexual. The thing about sexually suggestive pictures on public display is that they mean different things to different people. Pictures of semi-naked men evoke heterosexual desires in women, but these pictures look homosexual to men, which annoys them. And the same is true about pictures of semi-naked women. They evoke heterosexual interests in men, but these same pictures look lesbian to women, which is annoying for heterosexual women.
Yeah perhaps Dan, but I also think both genders feel uncomfortable at certain images because they are self-conscious of their own bodies, and worry if the other sex is attracted to them or not.
^ Yes, discomfort with competition is the common explanation for why women don't like seeing pictures of semi-naked women in public and why men don't like seeing pictures of semi-naked men in public either. But I'm not sure if this explanation is true. Because there is such competition between men and between women in any large group of people, even when there are no pictures at all. Some men are naturally much more attractive than other men are. And some women are naturally much more attractive than other women are. Such competition is a normal part of life, and both men and women are used to it. It normally happens all the time, even without any pictures at all. I think the discomfort of heterosexuals with homosexually-suggestive-pictures is real reason why men don't like looking at pictures of semi-naked men and why women don't like looking at pictures of semi-naked women.
