Well, it depends what aspect of John Stagliano movies you are referring to.
There's the Buttman side of course, with the gonzo movies. Showing a lot of tease emphasizing the bodies of the performers before the sex gets under way. The sex is strong without being degrading.
Then there's the camerawork aspect.
And of course there's the features, which once again highlight the most important thing about porn, good sex.
Fallen Angel 4, Trespass, and Heat are all excellent Bruce Cam flicks. Just be aware that there are 2 versions of all of these movies, so if you want the uncensored version, you need to order directly from TitanMen.com or TLAVideo.com.
Just have to put my 2 cents in on Bruce Cam. Fallen Angel series is great but if you want a kinder, gentler, i.e., sans leather Bruce Cam, you might try Redwood: Escape to Fern Falls . The sex is very good, all outdoors, and beautifully filmed.
Thanks for the recommendation, I will check it out.
On a related note, I can see how some of my posts might lead a person to believe that I don't like harsh, raw, or rough sex. Nothing could be further from the truth. I am interested in sex of all varieties, from lovey dovey flowers and butterflies straight sex to elbow-deep leatherman sex.
What I don't like is bad filmmaking, and I find it distressing is that so many pornographers seem to think that extreme content is an excuse for bad craft. There's nothing more dissapointing than seeing a pornographer turn a fundimentally compelling sexual act into a boring video.
In that case, look for anything directed by Bruce Cam (Titan Media + some older stuff from other studios) Kristen Bjorn (Sarava - everything he does is great!), Lucas Kazan (LKP, Sarava, others), George Duroy (Bel Ami & Falcon International Collection), John Rutherford (his 2-part stuff for Falcon - the 2-parters always get extra effort), Steven Scarborough (his Hot House stuff: Descent, Resurrection, Road Home, Road to Hopeful, Skuff), early & recent William Higgins (but you need to be selective - go only for the 4~5-star stuff), Wash West (various studios - stick to his 4~5-star stuff, but when he's good, he's very, very good). You really can't go wrong with any of these.
Chi Chi LaRue, a drag queen director (many studios), can be very creative and produce very high quality work as well; however, you need to be extremely selective of her work - 90% of it is garbage.
The best of Herve Handsome and Csaba Borbely is quite good, too; but much of it is formulaic - they have cornered the euro-hunk clone market originally opened by Kristen Bjorn. Their best is on par with his average stuff - but then you have to understand that his average stuff is among the best gay porn ever produced, making his best on par with Hollywood Oscar-level material.
Tony, if you're considering Fallen Angel 4, I'm selling a copy over in the DVD Trading forum. I believe FA4 would qualify as "Elbow deep leatherman sex"
Thanks for the heads up on Chi Chi LaRue. I did a price search that only turned up straight and all girl titles. I've seen two of Chi Chi's bi movies and both were good.
I just watched Down Austin Lane and thought that overall it was pretty average. The second scene really rocked, and I was genuinely surprised. It's one on one, very hot. One of the guys looks right though the camera like he knows you are watching several times in this scene. This works because he is not trying to put on a show, be sexy, smack kisses, make goo-goo eyes or anything. What comes across is raw sexual energy, like a wolf looking up from it's prey to survey it's surroundings. This isn't something a director can create, but it is very well captured in this scene.
Chi Chi LaRue is probably the single most prolific gay porn director in existence. S/he - under a variety of noms-des-porn - Taylor Hudson, Lawrence David, ad nauseum - has probably averaged nearly 2 videos a week for the last dozen or so years. Most are knocked out in a day or so. She is also famous for her 3-video weekends: start Friday, finish Sunday, tape 12-to-15 scenes, create 3 videos during the following week!
And to hear her talk, she has the most lavish budgets and best paid stars in the entire porn world. She reported that Idol in the Sky cost over $250,000 to produce and that Ryan Idol was paid $50,000 for his appearance in it. Hog wash! Drop a zero off both figures and you are probably closer to the mark.
In spite of all the schlock, some of her work is truly exceptional - just make sure you rent first if you don't have recommendations from reviewers you trust.
