...that appear next to the date in some older threads (such as this one - look next to the date and time of post no. 2 and 3 to understand what I mean): When did these symbols disappear, why (not that I miss them, just out of curiosity) and how did you make them?

I not really familiar with them since they were already gone when I joined. However the ? mark icon I have seen in a few older threads could be useful.

How do they display for input, and do you choose one at the time you make your post?

Yes, you choose one when you make a post. I think I would do it for new topics only instead of for replies. There would be a brief legend of icons with only one selectable. I think we would try to come up with a list of text descriptions to associate with each icon. It would be great to cover the common stuff like: please ID this person, WEHT, press releases, general questions, nonsense(?), news, etc.


I can have up to 255 icons but I think it would be best to limit the list to those that serve a purpose.

An endless list of them would be meaningless. A few cogent ones useful.

I also think that they should be available only for the originator of the thread.
