I understand that Gay DVDs don't have as much of a market as straight, although I think the market is starting to catch up, but why the heck are these DVDs around $50.00 a pop? Now, if these DVDs had extra content on them, like most straight DVDs do (extra scenes, behind the scenes stuff) I could understand, but most of these DVDs are the barest of bare bones, and yet still cost you an arm and a leg!

I understand, to a degree, that pirating of DVDs is causing the price to go be higher, but I know that straight DVDs get pirated just as much, and yet you can still get those for around $20 to $30.

Is the market really that small where they can't lower the price? I know some studios are cheaper, but a lot of features are just insane! And even some gonzo and amatuer DVDs are up there. Does anyone know any other reason that these DVDs are so much?

There's this urban legend that gay men have a lot of money at their disposal. I may have been true one generation ago, I don't know, but it certainly isn't any longer. Save for the odd exception, all my 20-something gay friends are on minimum wage. It's a crisis for everybody here. I don't know about the situation in the US. For studios that justify their hefty price with a fair amount of bonus material, try Titan Media. You spend 60 $, but at least you know why.

The price of gay DVD's has noting to do with piracy, the producers (of which there are only a few good ones onfortunately) ask extremely high wholesale prices for them (like they did for VHS too, in the pre-DVD era), most wholesale prices for gay DVD's are higher than the retail prices of straight DVD's. The same happens with certain fetish DVD's, I see them with wholesale prices of $60 and more! And if you think $50 is a lot, some Cadinot titles sell for EUR 99,95 (that's $130+)!!!
The cheapest we have would be some Private Man and Karen Dior titles for around $20-30, because those are older titles.

The main reason I mentioned the piracy thing is because it was mentioned by one of the heads of Titan media in an interview.

I'm sure that piracy is a factor; however, it is not the reason for such high prices for gay titles. Exclusive of duplication and distribution, most gay porn titles' budgets come in at no more than $25K.

A very few spend more: Bjorn once stated that his costs were on the order of $85K per title but his videos contain more money shots per minute than most of the other studios combined and his production values are among the very best in the business. Bjorn, and a few others, Titan Media, Bel Ami, Lucas Kazan, for example, justify their prices with significantly above average product.

However, most studios are hacks, turning out two or three videos from material shot simultaneously over a 3-or-4-day weekend featuring disinterested gay-for-pay tops who want as little interaction as they can get by with and over-used bottoms whose only talent is acting the part of a corpse while doing an imitation of the Chunnel. There is no excuse for their high price tags. Their charging $50 for such crap should be criminal fraud. And were it not for the socially imposed stigma of being gay in combination with society's disdain for admitted acceptance of pornography, it would be.

I did a bit of looking around and we do have a few titles on sale under $30:
Gay Culture (Private Man)
Inside Men (Karen Dior)
Inside Men #2 (Karen Dior)
Der Rammel Club (Vito)
Auto Freaks (Lao's)

And even a few under $20:
Job Wanted (Private Man)
Gambler's Delight (Private Man)
Sword Master (Private Man)

All PAL titles AFAIK.
(after we pay ADT their referal fee, we won't make much on this, but it is all for a good cause )

I don't know if these are any good, but I'll try to get a special discount for the ADT-ers on our regular priced items.

Karen Dior's gay stuff is generally crap (there may be one or two titles among her many which rise to the level of mediocre).

Private Man (aka ManSize) titles are average to decent (although I think they have stagnated at this point -- no new titles in ages after the initial 6 PMs and 2 MSs, both of which I like). Private offers the 6 PM titles in a 6DVD set at a significant discount if you happen to want all 6.

I know nothing about the other two you mention.

The only studios I've seen that have their stuff at a fairly cheap price, at least at Gay DVD Empire are the HIS titles. Although I am pretty sure most of those are out of print, but they have a few at around... like $25.00. The studio that really gets me, though, is All Worlds. I bought Seven Deadly Sins: Lust and it was like $40.00 and the DVD was really poorly done. The movie was great, but not worth that. The Titan titles tend to come with a ton of stuff, so I can understand the price tag, but I actually refuse to buy another All Worlds disc if those prices stay that high. It's insane!

Very good points everyone, i think it's ridiculous for the prices. It makes me so upset that if i want to buy a dvd I have to fork over 50-60 bucks. I refuse to do it unless i've rented it and have come to the conclusion that i must have it and that's very rare. I recently forked over 49.99 for the jan dvorak story from william higgins, I thought that was a very well made movie, the scenery, the guys, it was just worth it. But overall most movies are not worth the price and you're stuck with it, i tend to look for sales or specials also which don't save you all that much. What can we do to send a message to the studios and say enough is enough? The consumer is getting robbbed, and we should have a strong voice sending a strong message, becuase without our support were would they be??

they'd get allot more business if they lowered their prices to match what the straight dvds go for. I want to support the studios, so that they can continue to put out films for the gay community because it's what we want, but i'm not rich and i'm not going broke in the process.

I accept that there is a smaller market of gay porn. Some additional costs because of the smaller market are justified. I'd even be willing to pay a 50% premium over straight porn prices; but 2-to-5 times the cost of straight porn is highway robbery!

I think a part of the price has to do with the fact that gay porn has twice as many "expensive" stars as straight porn.

Remember, in straight porn, women are paid significant amounts of money (because they're who people are paying to see) while the men are paid next to nothing.

In gay porn, people are paying to see both the tops and the bottoms, so you have twice as many people you need to pay real money to in each scene...

They don't get paid that much. $2000-2500 per scene is typical for top stars in major productions from the top studios with the possible exception of a very, very few A-list stars who might command as much as 50% more. The B-list stars and studios get and pay even less.

Considering that a girl in a scene could be from $400-$1000, that seems about right- even if actors are on the around $900 a scene level, they're still going to result in higher costs.

Oh yeah, and you're getting gouged too. I think that the internet has yet to drive gay video prices down- many straight videos have similarly high list prices but, unlike gay videos, are aggressively discounted, in my experience.

From checking the prices in stores and then online, I actually have to agree. I checked the price for Tough Chick in store and it was like $40.00 and online it's around $25.00. I then checked some gay titles, and the price difference was non-existent.

Also, at least in my area (which is actually pretty close to Boys Town Chicago) most of the stores carry few gay titles. They hardly ever sell any of them. I'll see people checking them out, flip the box over, see the price, and put it back. I know the studios are trying to make money, but I'm noticing that they are starting to shoot themselves in the foot at the same time.

There is a major disconnect in all aspects of pricing and marketing gay titles. It seems obvious that high prices limit the market potential. Since there are few marketing studies or experts in the world of porn, the ongoing trend to overprice is one of the blind leading the blind.

Case in point. Consulting with the owner of an independent gay studio on pricing, he was advised by a distributor to set his retail price at $50. Why? So that his videos can stand beside those of the larger studios and not be seen as "cheap." Though he would like to think the market for his videos goes beyond just gay men, (women, couples) nothing in the way his own websites are done, or the way distributors or retailers present products facilitates this.
The reality of the economics. Let's say he charges $20 wholesale for small lots to retailers, and $15 for larger lots to distributors. IF he is able to sell all 1500 of his first run DVDs at an average price of $17.50, he barely makes budget on a $25,000 production.

What needs to be done is drop the wholesale price to $12.50 or less, and retail at $25.00. Some creative marketing is needed to boost sales beyond 3000 units in order to be profitable.

that makes so much sense, why cant' this become reality? for 25.00 that's not bad, i know i'd buy and keep on buying, but at 50-70.00 per tape, i always rent, and i feel bad because i want to support gay movies but they are out of control with their prices.

I wonder what some of the industry people would have to say here. I mean, some companies supply worthwile product for the cash, but I really would like to hear All World's excuse, or some of these other companies.

Sore subject, here: but I know people who rent-to-copy because of the prices. One of my very good friends has a collection of nearly 1000 mainstream videos on DVD -- all of which he purchased -- and an equal number of gay porn videos on DVD -- none of which he purchased. He's commented several times that were they half the price, it wouldn't be worth the effort to duplicate them. That represents a lot of lost sales and he's far from the only person with that attitude.

I've cut way back. I've nearly 700 porn DVDs now (about 90%gay), but I've only purchased 8 in the past 14 months. I simply can't justify their prices.

With the exception of a company like Arena* who does offer some fair price points on quality product, the company reps that I have spoken to want to keep their prices high - and they want to cut out retailers (especially online retailers) for not keeping their prices high. I've been very disappointed in that aspect of the gay porn industry. Our business model is based on helping you guys find the best prices at reliable retailers. If they want to cut out the retailer they also cut us out.

*Note - I'm biased about Arena because I love Tom who works there. Tom has supported us from the beginning and never gave us crap about x store selling x title for too little. As if we have any control over pricing...

That said bargain hunting can be done - see our recommended bargains - these are titles rated above average by reviewers that are at below average prices. Since every title on the page has a review you know what you're getting.

If only you were working at one of these companies (Titan, etc.) you could make a difference. It's like the big companes are out to get rich at our expense. If it were priced adequately then I'm all for it, this is a capitalist society. What is the state of gay porn in your opinion?? Do you see prices climbing higher and higher?? There are some gays that are willing to shell out the money that most studios are asking for adult films. I wonder how well these studios actually are doing, I mean if the majority of us on this site feel that they are too high, how can they be turning a profit?? I'm so naieve to the business side of things (smile).

Rive, I'm no market expert here. From what I gather plenty of guys are willing to spend big dollars for a movie. Those guys aren't researching/buying online. Online sales may be chipping away at the prices a bit, but not the industry desire to keep prices high. I don't know how the companies are doing financially. Personally, I think the market could be bigger if prices were lower - then people buy instead of renting. But as it is I don't think the market is that big. VOD/PPV will help since a lot of people who watch gay porn don't want to have evidence of it.

Gay or straight, porn does not enjoy the economies of scale that allows mainstream entertainment to be produced at a very high quality and offered at a very low price.

At its best, porn is a boutique product sold to a special interest market. Add shame, and the trade is barely distinguishable from moonshine – an inferior product sold to a thirsty market at an inflated price. The only thing you can do is vote with your dollars, and a lot of people do – they don't buy porn. Of course this only serves to make the market smaller, driving the quality down and the price up.

I see a glimmer of hope in the premium sex toy market. Producers of high-quality sex toys have shown that people will pay a premium price for a premium product, one that doesn't treat them as dispicable masturbators, but as joyously sexual human beings.

Can porn somehow follow this path? It's hard to say. It's going to take a clever combination of sexual heat, production values, and humanity to produce a good stroke video that the average person won't be ashamed to own.

I know of a gay bookstore in Amsterdam which also sells DVD's, they sell Cadinot titles for 100 Euro or more a movie, because they have to pay a lot for them. I offered to supply them with those titles for better wholesale prices (we sell them for 70 Euro (still bloody expensive in my opinion) but they were not interested, because the customers buy them anyway...

The pricing is simple......it's what the market will bear. Sex sells, sex is expensive.

OK, they won't sell 50mill copies of a movie but them again they don't cost $50mill to make. I bet the Private (and other big producers) series is selling close to 1mill or more per title, worldwide.

Sex movies (gay or straight) are like any other adult product: overpriced, beacuse they are a direct appeal to our emotional desires and we'll pay over the top for satisfaction. Also, they are a restriced product so producers, retailers can keep prices artificially high.

The prices will plummet when porn is available from Wal-Mart (and the equator freezes over).

but it doesnt' have to be so expensive, they could make so much more I'm sure if they would just lower them to the ranges of straight tapes which run 20-30 dollars. I just think they are cheating themselves out of a bigger piece of the pie.

Well, it isn't all the producers fault. Case in point, we had a large chain that took a large quantity of a couple of our earlier titles, and negotiated favorable terms (cash up front, large quantity = lower price per unit.) They told us that they intended to price the product to move at their 40+ stores.

What happened? They swallowed the excellent margin we gave them, and basically quadrupled the price that we sold it to them for.

The crazy thing is, the titles still sold extrememly well. But I still wonder if the sales wouldn't have been double if the price had been where they'd originally promised us it would be.

The other thing is, a smaller studio isn't necessarily looking at the potential market for sales that a larger studio has. So even though the production cost may be lower, a studio might have to sell 1000 or 2000 units just to break even, and in a competitive marketplace, if the title is just mediocre, it may not sell more than 1500-3000 units over its lifetime, vs hundreds of thousands of copies of a mainstream hollywood release. So the producer needs to try and set his prices so that he make a decent profit and continue to produce new titles.

I agree that studios setting wholesale prices at $30 or more are basically missing out on the market segment that would be there if they experimented with lower pricing... but as I stated above, even offering value pricing to a dealer or distributor doesn't guarantee that the end-user purchaser will see that pricing.

If I was gay, I'd jump on this opportunity in a nanosecond. You got what, 10s of thousands of pissed off customers just waiting for an excuse to create some competition? Why not pool your resources, make some unusual amateur DVDs, and sell them on the internet for $25? Plus lots of young guys making minimum wage? Exactly what is the downside? I buy all the time from dirtydirector (same concept) at $25, his competion is huge, and his women homely but nasty. Camera gear is very affordable.
I don't get it.

Dude, even the cheap gonzo stuff is $50 bucks. The studios can put the price tag on there, because everyone else does. I think Vivid Man and HIS are the only ones who drop the prices down. The thing is, most Gay DVDs are either features or vignette style movies. The gonzo market in gay porn is nowhere near as big as in straight porn. I can only think of two gonzo titles that are under $40.00 (Bait Bus and Boys Casting). All the rest of the gonzo stuff just goes straight to the internet (thats where Bait Bus and Boys Casting started). I'm just hoping that His First Huge Cock comes out on DVD soon (and for cheap).

If you go to the site hisfirsthugecock.com . If you can see previews for some of their episodes. I have no idea who is putting it out, but I think it's owned by the same company that owns Boys Casting. I have no idea if it is coming to DVD any time soon. I just hope it is. Their stuff is some of the only decent gonzo style stuff I've seen in a while.

Bait Bus was sleazy and way to staged, and none of the guys were good looking. Boys Casting was more twink oriented, and even then it was pretty blah. Plus the guy who hosted Boys Casting is far from eye candy.

There are a few other sites that have the gay gonzo type stuff. I think there is a Blind Dating one... and Boys First Time (although the guys tend to recycle on that one). Still this is all online.

All Worlds is one of the few companies that has high quality feature catalog. Once-in-a-blue-moon, some companies have specials. But I know for a fact there are 60 All Worlds titles that are cheaper to purchase. It is possible the store you are buying from hasn't lowered the prices. And the price of gay DVD is dictated by wholesale. Here's the breakdown:

studio sells to wholesaler
wholesaler sell to distributor
distributor sells to retailer
retail sells to consumer

There has been a little breakdown to this in the last few years, with wholesalers selling directly to stores and consumers. But there is fairly good solidarity among businesses in the gay sector. It does appear that there is a change, with Studios doing more and more retail directly to customers anyways.

I know of some places in the US where retailers are getting $120 for high end gay (Bel Ami, Kristen Bjorn, Falcon, Titan, etc). Makes $50-$60 sound like a bargain, huh?

For the mail order versions, I can understand it. These titles are hot commodities and you can only find them in like two places. And the Hot House and Titan titles are especially value driven. Falcon, maybe not. It helps the studios bring in a little $$$ to make the risk of making such risky material worth it. Keep in mind, if you buy a movie in a store, the studio gets like 1/3 of what the movie is sold for. So I'm not at all against a studio making money on the retail end.

On the straight side, did you know Max Hardcore's European versions sell for $60? And the have maybe 3 or 4 scenes. But it's because of the content.

Since we buy a lot of our gay movies straight from the studio, I can assure you that it is the studio driving up the prices, not the wholesalers. And a euroversion of Max Hardcore for $60 is a ripoff, they are $30-40 over here and that's because the dollar is so low at the moment.

I don't just mean the mail order versions though. Even on a regular edit, no fetish movie like Manhunt.TheMovie, the wholesale rate of Hot House has risen to match Falcon's.
