Director of the Year: Joey Silvera It's not even close, really: Joey gets it right. The flow. The girls. The kink. The balance of humor and hardcore intensity. Even the inconsistencies of his movies are somehow not even flaws, because his approach to porn is somehow holistic, and he puts the pleasure of the performer first. Dig the titles of his series -- "Service Animals," "Runaway Butts," "Hellcats" -- these are not "niche"-driven lines; a scene is a scene, involving whatever happens to happen, so much more like real life, if real life was lived in Joey's house, with all that hip furniture and Cris Taliana dropping by after soccer practice to wiggle her ass. Heirs apparent: Jules Jordan -- for concept and execution and dedication to fetish -- and Jonni Darrko, because the shit looks so damn good.
Tie: Nacho Vidal and Rocco Siffredi I have to honestly say I'd much rather Nacho was active as a performer in other people's scenes rather than spending so much time in Brazil, if you know what I mean. No knock to the genre, or whatever Nacho wants to do with his career, but I really miss the energy he brings as a top stud-for-hire -- and I don;t think his movies are that special (except for the amazing "Back 2 Evil." If he and the production team at Evil Angel did more projects like that, I would be delirious). Rocco, still doing great stuff but it feels a little like a great marathon runner or boxer taking a few concluding laps, throwing a few final punches. I really miss the old vibe, but I really hope his art-film career takes off. He's really one of the genuinely fascinating characters in porn who have transcended the business in a way hardly anyone else has (outside of Jenna, et al).
