I've finally decided to add this Golden Age beauty to my collection, and doing a price search here on ADT, I found that there are two versions available:

Story of Joanna, The (Alpha Blue)

Story of Joanna, The (TVX)

The prices are within a buck of each other, so I'm wondering if there's a difference in quality between the two?

The two releases are very different but neither is remotely impressive.

The Alpha Blue edition appears to be taken from a worn theatrical print; it's colourful and in the correct aspect ratio, but the print is very, very battered. The biggest problem with this release is that the reels are in the wrong order, making the film virtually unintelligible.

The TVX release is much as you'd expect - soft, cropped to full-frame and lacking in detail. It's also cut.

As I said, both releases leave a lot to be desired; if I had to pick one . . . I suppose it would be the TVX.

THAT is inexcusable. I've been fairly impressed with some of Alpha Blue's releases (God bless 'em for putting out that Anna Ventura comp.) but what you describe is worthy of a recall.

Agreed. There was talk of a corrected version but it never materialised. I think there's a thread about this in the archives somewhere.

I'd go with the TVX version since it is in the proper order. Too bad about the ABA version as it is in the original widescreen. I split the difference and got both.

I have the Excalibur Films' DVD-R which is supposedly the longest version available.

It's fullscreen, has a bit hissy soundtrack and only the generic Excalibur cover "art" but I would recommend this rather than the ABA and TVX releases.
