Though I've been collecting hardcore DVDs for all of three years, I now have hundreds of titles. In addition, my mainstream film library now totals well past a thousand titles.

Something I have noticed: Among those thousand-plus mainstream films in my library, nearly all of which were purchased from online vendors, only around three or four titles arrived loose in their cases. All of them were replaced by the vendors.

But as far as porn goes, I would say that, at the minimum, I've received no fewer than around twenty "rattlers" — possibly more. Eventually, I get a non-rattler from the vendors, but only after several tries.

Why are porn DVDs arriving like this in such higher numbers?

Another thing: Many of the porn DVDs are player-sensitive, whereas none of the mainstream film titles are. For example, Wildlife's All Pissed Off series, at fourteen titles, plays on only two of my current three players; the player upon which they will not play gives me an "unreadable disc" screen.

This happens often with porn discs, but never with mainstream films. Further, the errant discs are not DVD-Rs or such. They are bonafide DVDs.

Any thoughts on why this should be?

Porn is a much smaller scale so you don't have your own studio/manufacturing facilities. You pay someone to run your 10,000 discs and look for the cheapest place.

Now studios have figured that one bad disc might make you avoid their product so quality has improved quite a bit.

all cases are bad for discs. I always put them in sleeves.

As far a "rattlers" are concerned, many of the adult companies are more cost conscious and use cheaper cases than the mainstream companies do.

On player incompatabilities, the mainstream companies use top of the line replicators and perform far more quality control than adult companies do. Even the better adult companies will only view a movie in the 3 or 4 DVD players that they have in the office before determining that it is good. The mainstream companies will perform much more extensive tests.

The advent of DVD authoring programs for PCs has resulted in even more porno DVDs of questionable quality -- where at one time the work would be taken to a professional house (& there's some crappy pro houses serving the porn industry, make no mistake), now your company owner is often grasping the option of making whomever the low man on the totem pole spend what time he has between editing the shows, answering the phones, packing orders, what have you, authoring the movies you see.

I'm not referring, of course, to Evil Angel, where in-house authoring has been done the right way from the start & has risen to something of an art in itself.

Cygnus, your next problem will be dvd rot, which means today your adult dvds may work tomorrow they may not.

I've had about 60 to 70 adult dvds stop working or develop some type defect, all were in mint condition, all properly cared for, usually only watched once and 99% were Evil Angel titles. I've never had a problem with a mainstream dvd, I never had a problem with most of the other top porn companies dvds ( Anabolic, Platinum, WCP, VCA...).

This is a scary thought because I have 100's too. Although some tend to have problems in certain players. I have not had one stop working entirely yet.

I've had mainstream titles that wouldn't play properly also. My first Pulp Fiction sucked. It isn't just porn titles that are victimized by shoddy work, only more of them.

That porn quality is below mainstream quality is to expect in my opinon. I don't return rattling discs if they play like they should, but I would like all dvds to be in a plastic or paper sleeve to protect it till it arrives at it's final destination, the customer.

Then the pressings are an issue, I don't know but I think some porn are pressed both in the US and Europe. I've experienced some bad european presses so now I try to get only US pressings.

I guess we have to put our hope in blueray...

But it's strange... cuz I'be NEVER EVER had a audio compact disc turning on me... and those discs are 10 years or more.

Adam & Eve's dvds are also prone to dvd rot
