Does anyone else find it ironic that Jenna Jameson is the poster girl for the porn industry?
I sense there is a desire in some parts of the industry for porno to become more acceptable in mainstream, whatever they mean by that term, with awards like Crossover Star at the AVN Awards. It always strikes me as a slightly apologetic award, striving for something they are not instead of embracing what they are. So given this backdrop of wonderful glittery mainstream, it strikes me as incongruous for porn land as a whole to regard Jenna Jameson as their hero. A woman that is the embodiment of the whole drugs and partying stereotype that porn is always fighting to shake itself from.
If, as an industry, they really want to be seen more favorably in the mainstream, which is the impression i get, they really need to establish a more clean cut figurehead and shed themselves of the shadow of JJ. I've read her book and she was a giant meth head who went on drug fueled feature dancing escapades while under Contract. I wouldnt say she was a professional or a good example to follow, unless being spun out on drugs is the aim. At the height of her success, she herself admits to having a Diva attitude and giant Ego. But most of all, she is the cliche of the lifestyle that parents fear the most upon hearing their daughter is going to start making adult movies. There must be plenty of clean living examples in porn, but their non headline making nature means people outside of porn dont hear of them in the same way. And it sure will be frustrating for them to be tarred with the same brush.
For me, so long as there is a mentality where JJ is revered rather than condemned within the industry, they are ensuring they will always be non mainstream. I like porn and have no problem with where porn fits in society, i think it is where it should be and has done well for many years. That is, in its own enjoyable world, one which consumers can choose to indulge themselves in. And as we know, have and many do. It sucks that girls can suffer stigma for doing porno, but again a big part of that is due to the impression the public have got from the antics of people such as JJ. I would go so far as to say it is incompatible to bemoan a poor public perception while still holding a light up anyone who behaved as JJ did. It's a double edged sword if they still want to embrace her as a success story on how women can make serious bank. But maybe im misreading it and mainstream is nothing and there isnt much concern on how the industry performers are perceived. In which case, thanks and carry on.

I would have to agree here. I think Kayden Kross, Bobbi Starr or Nina Hartley would make better role models than Jenna. As I understand it Jesse Jane also steered clear of most of the drug usage in the industry. If Bobbi Starr continues directing for Kink and making movies for John Stagliano on the side she will also have made more money than Jenna (if you think that way). Bobbi may only make $5K-$10K on average for an Evil Angel release (multiply that by the five or so movies a year she makes for them) but I would think Kink pays directors at least $250K annually plus bennies to start and raises annually to boot.

I nominate Sasha Grey for the role. Plays against type, and has beauty and brains to burn.

I see your point, but I don't think having a better-behaved "poster girl" would really accomplish much in making porn more mainstream. The porn industry will always be considered a somewhat fringe industry, even though tens of millions of people in this country watch it. You read enough of the posters here and you will see that even some of the most ardent porn "fans" still have a disdainful view of the women who act in porn. Can you imagine what Mr. and Mrs. Churchgoer in middle America think of them? Our puritanical culture frowns upon women who have sex on camera as well as those who have sex with a lot of partners. Certainly JJ's problems aren't helping the image of the porn industry, but I don't think it necessarily hurts it all that much either.
That said, I think overall, as the internet has made porn more ubiquitous, porn is moving into mainstream a little at a time on its own. Shaved pussies have become more popular among everyday women. We have "allowed" women like Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian to become mega celebrities and their launching pad was porn. I don't think we'll ever get to the point where most parents would be proud to have their daughter go into porn, but I think we've become a little more accepting of it. At least some of us.

When? Ten years ago? She's irrelevant. The only reason she's ever talked about at all nowadays is because of occasional stupid TMZ style drama that is immediately shoved off the TMZ homepage by other sub-D List celebrities' stupid TMZ style drama.

If anyone does a story on porn, like one of the big networks I bet they feature either Sasha Grey or Jesse Jane.

Yup. Jesse & Sasha, not Jenna, have been the face of the industry for awhile now.

Ok, being in the UK, I acknowledge being out of touch with American mainstream media. So i listen and accept that Sasha Grey, Bree Olsen, Jesse Jane are the current 'it girls'. If so, then that's a good thing. Well not so much Bree Olsen and they way she came to prominence with Charlie Sheen, but heh.

But Sasha Grey is perhaps going places and we'll see where it takes her, aside from outraging parents by reading to their kids. I view Bree Olsen as a pornstar/escort who shot to fame over one event and now just wants to get married and have kids, according to her interviews. In a years time, people may remember Charlie Sheen doing this stuff but have forgotten the names of all the porn girls he was involved with, girls they otherwise had never heard of. And i admit im ignorant of Jessie Jane's level of mainstream exposure, of any profile she has outside of porno fans who watch her films.
Still, I suspect JJ, with the success and reach of her biography, has created a bigger impact on how people think of porno land compared with Sasha Grey or the others. There was a time when girls joining the industry would name JJ as their idol when doing those Q & A type interviews. If thats now changed, then fine. And if non-porn watching mainstream society no longer holds her as their strongest association with the industry. If some general 'everyday' people were doing an informal quiz game in a bar with friends, and someone said name a pornstar, perhaps people would no longer commonly have Jenna Jameson as the first name to come out.

I doubt a lot of people even know who JJ is anymore, Sasha Grey is much better known among young people in my experience.

Its pathetic, she represents too many bad aspects of porn.
She was sexually abused growing up and ended up in porn because of a boyfriend, modified her body and face awfully struggled with anorexia.
And she didn't really make that many good movies.

Every few years they pick some young petite blonde feature star to be the face
of porn. First it was Shauna Grant, then Savannah, then Jenna Jameson, then
Jesse Jane. It's never a hardcore brunette like Sasha Grey, or an older star
Lisa Ann.

Also whoever they pick doesn't do really hardcore stuff like DPs and they
definitely don't do IR because they have to market them to southern rednecks.

The poster girls for porn are those who are, a-attractive, b-popular, c-able to speak in complete sentences. Jenna fit those qualifications so she made an entertaining guest on Howard Stern and others. Really, this isn't Miss America. The rest of it doesn't matter.

Mainstream American could care less about pornstar role models. The reason for much of Jenna's mainstream attention was because she was a goodlooking woman who was a porn business woman that made lots of money from porn. That made it easier for mainstream America to accept her because she was this successful busineswoman who did it through porn rather than just a woman who did porn. The mainstream didn't care if she was actually a good pornstar or not or what type of role model she was. The same is true for all the pornstars that cite Jenna as a role model. They didn't really care about Jenna's performance or the way she alived her life or presented herself they just wanted to be as successful as Jenna was.
Jenna's success just fed off itself. The fact that she was a successful pornstar made the mainstream aware of her. The fact that she was known by the mainstream meant more people buying or trying porn bought her porn because it was the pornstar they were familiar with. Those sales translated into more popularity...which fed into more mainstream attention, and so on and so on.

Actually Lisa Ann is the most popular adult star today, everybody knows who she is, I think she's the highest paid adult star today as well.

Thanks for all the input, there is certainly a lot to think on. Also, I apologize because i perhaps used a slightly misleading term originally. When i said the poster girl of porn, i didnt mean the current en vogue performers that every porn fan will have heard of. I know Jenna Jameson is long retired from shooting.
Instead, I meant the first person that comes to mind when the general public hear mention of the porn industry, or the hear the term pornstar. The people who are otherwise not aware of whats going on in porn except for what is presented to them in the news and mainstream media. There must be plenty of people out there who couldnt name 5 American porn performers, even if you let them reach right back to the 70's.
However, that's all become less relevant now because lots of other valid points have been raised.

The porn community really kissed Jenna's butt because she was the most well known pornstar out there and she wasn't freaking people out or scaring people away from porn like so many other pornstars before her had done. Here was this goodlooking woman saying she was porn's biggest star and how she was making all this money from porn because she a businesswoman. Mainstream America was comfortable with her and accepted her and it all made porn not so horrible and almost cool for awhile. The porn biz was extremely happy with Jenna for doing this and hoped it would open the doors for porn to shed it's bad image. Also Jenna's movies were selling like crazy (in porn terms)so the porn world was more than happy to hold her up as the poster girl of porn and toss a bunch of awards her way. Jenna also gave other porngirls an idol to try and emulate. What young pornstar wouldn't want to be be like Jenna with the mainstream world not turned off by her being a pornstar, the porn world putting her on a pedestal, her movies being big sellers, and all that money she was reportily making.
It's totally understandable the world of porn embraced Jenna because she was the face of porn and she wasn't an embarrassment (for the most part). If you look at some of the other most known pornstars they didn't always come off in the best light. John Holmes was well know but for having a large package and being involved with a murder case. Ron Jeremy was/is this strange looking guy who has lots male fans because they feel he's one of them and he just pops up in weird places. Most of the other well known pornstars before Jenna because of some sort of scandal. Jenna does deserve props for being one of the pornstars that made porn seem okay for mainstream audiences to accept and talk about.
Jenna's rise to fame was a perfect storm of luck, being in the right place at the right time, timing, and her (and her people) being smart enough to capitalize on her oppurtunities when they presented themselves. If Jenna or anyone else had to do it again they wouldn't be able to pull it off. Tera Patrick was able to ride that wave for awhile and a few others were able to get some exposure because of the door Jenna opened but I don't think anyone will be able to achieve Jenna's type of success in the same way Jenna did again. The most well known girls in porn today got their success in totally different ways. Bree Olsen, Mary Carey, Sasha Grey, Joslyn James, Janine, etc., mainstream exposure is very different from Jenna's and it didn't result in huge sales of their movies.
As a performer Jenna didn't exactly set the porn world on fire. But that probably played to her advantage. For the many people who watched their first porn because of Jenna or for the couples who watched porn together for the first time because of her it's probably a good thing Jenna wasn't doing any wild or crazy stuff and what she gave them was probably good enough. The Gonzo crowd will never be big fans of Jenna because she doesn't push things far enough like they're used to.
So...Did Jenna deserve all the props she got/gets? I'd say yes but only because of how her mainstream image helped make porn not seem so bad to lots of non-porn people. And she was the face of porn back then and to a certain extent she still is today. She deserves props for being so successful in porn and making so much money from it. she deserves props for crossing over into mainstream in a way no other pornstar had done before or since.

I never got the Jenna thing, I got one of her movies to see what was so special, didn't see anything, so I got another, and another, now I have ten of her movies, so that's how she did it.

I'd say it also helped a lot that Jenna was around when the internet started to raise its head higher.
Because of internet and easier access to porn, Jenna's name was known to every guy in the school. It was slow as hell to download full movies, so piracy wasn't yet doing that much damage. Also, there weren't as much names to try to remember. Nowadays there are so many different girls in porn, some leaving into obscurity and some staying longer, that it's not that easy to make a name to stay in people's mind as well as Jenna did. Someone said that Lisa Ann is way more popular now, but I'd say that people know her from the Sarah Palin thing more than from her own name. Her name isn't as well known as Jenna's is.
She certainly deserves credit for raising the popularity of porn into a whole new level.
EDIT:
And what comes to her life with drugs, it's a sad thing. But then again, there are huge amounts of mainstream actors who are just as awful drug users, and even worse. I find it weird that people connect drugs with porn so much. Sure porn performers sometimes, perhaps even often, are drug users, but that's how it is in the whole entertainment business. They are making lots of money, and have parties where people connect with wrong kinds of people. I'd say drugs aren't any more of a problem in porn industry than it is in mainstream entertainment industry, although mainstream people do have better "safe nets" under them than people performing in porn, but that's the problem of society, not of porn.

Given the preponderance of drugs and partying in the entertainment industry as a whole, I wouldn't put too much weight in that analysis.
Perhaps we should consider the possibility that the porn industry is trying to establish itself as legitimate entertainment, whatever that means. At the very least, if one is constantly fighting the charge of being sleazy, then being able to serve up a wholesome looking 'girl next door' model has an obvious advantage, wouldn't you think?
Granted, Ms. Jameson isn't as wholesome looking as she used to be, but then, neither is a good portion of the 'mainstream' entertainment industry.

She’s like the Britney Spears of porn. Neither had much talent but the right publicity team behind them made them into super stars.

Agree with Draxx and Damie.
I like Jenna as a person. She seems funny and generally down to Earth, though obviously with baggage (hence the intermittent crazy behavior that pops up on TMZ) but it was definitely right place, right time.
Wasn't her entire big thing/signature move blowjob with saliva? I remember reading that in several places. You don't even notice that anymore but I guess it was a big thing back in the early 90s when she first started.
But she definitely wouldn't survive again if she had to start over nowadays since she refused to do so many things. I just finished watching her 'Next American Sex Star' and half the girls tried to be like her and refuse to do anal/interracial/start out slow and work up/etc just like she did and most didn't even make it to the third episode. They were all the first to go and only the girls who were willing to do the most gonzo stuff lasted.
As far as the drugs go, a lot of her craziness she got out pre-porn or very early in her career so I don't think it's necessarily fair to hold that against her. I think she's generally done ok until her recent DUI (in May?). She'd tried to have a baby for a long time, even with her ex Jay Grdina and even did IVF with him so I don't think she would be doing a lot of drugs/drinking at that point and she was still launching/working for Club Jenna at that point during the peak of her wealth/career.

Any girl thinking following the Jenna Jameson playbook to porn stardom will work for them is totally wasting their time and setting themselves up for failure or a very limited porn career. Jenna's stardom is owed mostly to luck and timing more than anything and that can't be duplicated. Girls should look up to and try and follow the Sasha Grey or Bobbi Starr playbook to stardom. Those girl's successes came from trying to be the best pornstars they could be and willing to do stuff the fans wanted to see and not having a long list of stuff and people they wouldn't do. And as far as I can tell neither one see/saw porn as this bad or shameful thing they have to do and hey embraced it and had/have fun with it. They both have/had fans all across the porn spectrum because they would work for almost everyone.
That's the kid of realistic goals a girl can acheive if they put in the work. Not the kinda uncontrolable "right place, right time" luck that Jenna had. Jenna's whole claim was she was the biggest pornstar, not the best, prettiest, or smartest.

No. Inari Vachs gets the credit for being the first girl to give slobbery blowjobs with lots of saliva back in the late 90s.

The best scene she ever shot was one of her first with Randy West in the Up & Cummers. No plastic, genuine desire. after that she was a dead fuck performer & I could tell it was all about the cash.
Totally overrated.

^I'm with you guys up to the part about a dead fuck and the cash. I'm sure many of her later scenes weren't any good but she still put out plenty of heat inducing scenes prior to that. I never particularly liked them myself but she wouldn't have sold as many titles if she was always a dead fuck. I'd also like to add that if anyone is in porn for any other reason than the money then they should quit right now. Porn is a way for someone to make a huge amounts of money in a short period or at least it used to be.
