"Beautiful" took a few big wins at AVN, which doesn't really mean a lot to me, but I wanted to check it out anyway. I'll pretty much watch Devinn Lane in anything (though it really stars Julia Ann and Stormy), and the idea of a big-budget porno-noir appeals to me.

I tend not to like Michael Raven movies. They don't connect with me for some reason. This one wasn't my favorite Wicked movie of the year, or in the top five, but it has its strong points.

Pros: It's really great eye candy. The women are all, in fact, beautiful (to me, at least), and I love the 30s/40s period costumes. Julia Ann in particular gets to wear some sweet outfits, and hats. It's nicely shot, and there's a very stylishly blurred-up nightmare sequence that looks spectacularly cool.

It hits a lot of fetish points. In that dream sequence, Julia Ann and Stormy are in seriously hot latex outfits. An anachronism maybe, but who cares? It's a noir, so there's a lot of smoking. I'm not a smoking fetishist, but it seemed pretty sexy to me. Julia Ann has another latex dominatrix outfit in her b/g scene, and it ends with him coming on her foot. Not for me, but worth noting for people who like that kind of thing.

Something in me always likes an adapted fairy tale. This is based on Snow White. Julia Ann's character is named Ellen Queen, she owns a company that makes mirrors, and she arranges to have Stormy's character, Sondra White, killed. (I liked Neil Gaiman's take on the story better, though).

Devinn Lane probably turns in her hottest b/g scene so far, IMO.

Cons: Lane's scene is really the only one that's hot-hot-hot. But I'm watching this because I love porn-as-art, even when I'm not whacking, so that doesn't kill me.

As usual, my complaints are mainly about the plot/script. Some of the sex scenes are very "porno", in that they don't advance the story and just come out of nowhere. The ending is weird, and doesn't really flow naturally from what comes before.

Overall, I'd say it's pretty good, but I'm wavering right on the edge of whether I think it's worth buying.

Well, I thought you looked great as a gum-cracking noir dame, and you were convincing as someone from that time. I did enjoy Beautiful overall, just not as much as, say, Breathless or Improper Conduct.

Obi - actually some of your points about the script were brought up by Julia and Stormy during the commentary such as why Brad Armstrongs character waited to go into the warehouse to get stormy. The porn answer of course was so Steven could have time to have sex with Kaylani.

Me I tend to like Michael Raven films and I loved this one. I thought Julia did an outstanding job.

See, that's the thing. This is a great-looking movie, but there are some basic storytelling deficiencies. Kaylani's character never even gets a proper introduction, and we aren't told why she has sex with St. Croix.

Sure, as I've said elsewhere, I'm aware I'm watching porn. But Wicked manages to put out a dozen or more movies a year that don't have these kinds of "porno" problems. It's just that most of them are Armstrong's and Morgan's.

Beautiful was good, but I'd have put Improper Conduct, Kink, Not a Romance, Love & War, and maybe The Assignment ahead of it for Best Video, just from that company. Just my opinion.

Beautiful looked beautiful on my big screen, I dug the retro look, I could watch Devinn Lane get fucked for 100 hours or until the lube runs out, I want yet another AVN award category, for Best Looking Pussy of the Year, Devinn's bejeweled masterpiece would win by a landslide, keep the b/g scenes acomin.

Stormy looked stunning, just the smile gets me stirring, these Wicked Women are a healthy antidote to the Gonzo robots. Raven seems more interested in the mirrors, colored lamps, electronic muzak, fireplaces, than he does in the old in and out, but thats not a bad thing, it keeps the raincoaters away, even if it makes it more difficult to find some hard wood in the forest. I thought there was one too many spotlights flashing in the Stormy/Julia g/g which could have been a scorcher, but at least Michael can say "I am not a pornographer, I am an Artist", over a couple of beers at midnight, with his photog friends. And maybe he is.

For my money, Suspicious Minds is the best feature of 2003. It's Stormy's "vision", she looks fetching in UPS brown, acting goofy, getting fucked with a tiara on, she could be my princess any day. But this is Jessica Drakes movie, she gets fucked all over the place, she's a contract girl now, the total package surpassing the individual parts, I even like the tattoos, I need to get her collected works. And Brad Armstrong has slowly inched to the head of the directing class, now that he has deep-sixed the sailing ships, frilly costumes, fire engines and other asundry distractions, and focused on the people. He's got the sex scenes nailed, he's studied the angles, a wide shot of Jessica getting pounded doggie, her long mane flowing, looking back at her pounder with a sexy fuck me harder look, to prove the point.
