I did a title search that didn't come up with a confirmed street date. Has anything happened with this yet? I can't wait to put this alongside my Russ Meyer collection!

According to Melinda McDowell it will eventually be released, but who knows when that will be. We've all been waiting for this DVD for at least a year, but there's no more a sign of it now than then. Maybe if we're lucky it will be out by 2008. Like I said, I'll believe it when I see it.

No confirmed release date that I know of, I have the Njuta version to hold me over, I think it will show up eventually though.

Melinda insists that it will, but she's been saying that for a long time now.

They've added a "Buy Now" click-thru button to the DVD's official site. Perhaps the status is changing at long last?

Unfortunately that's been there since the beginning of the site. With the same pop-up when you click on it.

Exactly. Also, the website hasn't been updated once. I suggested to Melinda that she mention the progress of the DVD production on the "DVD/Products" section, but she hasn't done that.

That's because there's nothing to load. You should contact Melinda to see what's up with the DVD. The rest of us have already done that, so I'm curious to see what she tells you about the release date.

I may have found a reason why the DVD is still not out. Melinda is apparently still looking for a distributor. She mentioned it here.

I always thought that she planned to self distribute it at least at first. You'd think if a distributor was the only thing keeping it held up she'd shop a company like VCX to distribute. If she has the masters prepared, VCX has the network to get it out.

That's what I thought. I got that impression since I first heard about it, and I figured that's why it would only be sold through the official website. Melinda claims that several distributors are interested in the movie, and I'm curious to find out which ones. I wonder if this will increase the chances of the DVD being sold through other outlets.
I wish that a company like Criterion would release the DVD, but here's the problem with the movie: it's too porn for Criterion, not porn enough for Evil Angel. I don't even think that VCX would be a good distributor because while "Thundercrack!" is porn-like in terms of content it can't really be considered a porno film (it's not even close to being erotic, and it wasn't meant to be). It doesn't fit in with Golden Age porno films, let alone the likes of "Big Giant Titties" and "Fill My Ass With Cum". But like I said before, there are apparently distributors already in line. It's just a matter of which one Melinda goes with.

I doubt that Criterion would release it either. It has a limited audience, which means cuts down on the amount of distributors that would carry it. It would be nice if Media Blasters, Synapse or Retro Seduction would distribute it. However if they don't I still think that VCX would be a viable alternative.

I am all in favour of VCX getting the distribution, then we might get the European distribution and that would be very cool.

I don't know which DVD distributors are interested in the movie, but I'm guessing they're ones who specialize in cult films since fans of that genre are the movie's target audience. Watch, she goes with one that we would never expect. I don't care who distributes the movie as long as it's a company that will get it to as many stores as possible and that puts out a well-made product (which I read this will be). I know that even if Criterion did pick it up it won't be sold at Best Buy (I wish it would be), but I hope that Amazon.com will be daring enough to sell it. Hopefully all of our questions will be answered soon.

Does anyone on this board live in or near Syracuse? If so, you're in luck. This one movie theatre is actually going to show the movie. I wish that I could go, but since I live on the other side of the country it's not possible.

Believe it or not, I recently found a videotape copy of this movie at a local video store. According to the box it's the complete and uncut version. I didn't rent it, but it's good to know that the movie is available somewhere if I'm in the mood to see it. I've completely given up hope on the DVD ever being released.

Well, I rented that videotape copy I found, and that DVD really needs to be released. The picture quality of the tape was okay, but the sound was atrocious (especially at the beginning of the movie), and during the last twenty minutes or so of the movie the tape was so messed up it was unwatchable. But this had to do for now.
As for the movie itself, it's fucking bizarre. Sure, Mrs. Gert Hammond was a total nutcase, but the other people were weird as well (in their own ways). A strange house on a strange night with strange people. Most of the movie didn't come back to mind as I was watching it, so I'm definitely glad I saw it again.
If you're looking for something remotely erotic, you definitely have the wrong movie. "Thundercrack!" isn't even close. But if you want something that's totally whacked-out, then this movie is for you.

Wow, I would have bet money that this was never going to make it out. I'm interested to see what extras make it on especially since she's been asking fans what they would like to see on the disc(s). I think Synapse is a good fit for the title.

We've waiting at least four years for this, right? It sounds like it's finally coming together. And from little what I know about Synapse, they specialize in rare horror movies. This movie will definitely be good for them.

They tend to do lesser known titles, this isn't their first venture into X-rated films though as they released both The Image and Thriller.

However, in the ongoing saga of waiting, Synapse apparently is just starting restoration of the print with plans to release in 2010.

Thundercrack is not arriving on DVD in 2010. Apparently the restoration of the long print is more of a project then Synapse thought it would be and they are having to try to use the short print to fix spliced scenes in the long print.

That really sucks. I was hoping to buy a copy of it. We may have to wait another five years for the DVD to be released.

From what I understand from Don May, Jr. (the President of Synapse) on one of the horror boards I frequent, it's not going to be five years.
They have several high-profile releases that all be ready for release around the same time, so they are going to try to stagger the release dates between late 2010 / 2011. I fully believe we'll see this title in stores next year. Still a long wait, but based on the TLC they're giving it, it should be worth it.

I think it's the same board where I asked him if it was coming out this year. I also got the impression that it would probably not be five years either.

I highly doubt it since he said it won't be seen in 2010 and there are still 3 months left in 2010. I suspect it won't be the first several months of 2011 either since they are still attempting to put together a complete composite print.

^ Have you seen the doc, It Came From Kuchar? It's on my netflix instant list, and I never got around to watching it. If I'd known they made porn, I would have watched a long time ago.

I haven't watched that Kuchar doc yet, but it's on my list as well. Curt McDowell directed Thundercrack but George Kuchar co-wrote the script. McDowell also did some interesting explicit shorts like Loads, he seemed more interested in using porn than the Kuchar brothers. Hopefully some of the shorts will be extras on the Synapse release, most of McDowell's and the Kuchars' work is still not available on DVD or Blu-Ray.

For those who are still waiting for this release, Synapse responded to an inquiry on it's status stating that they are fixing a few things, no details on what needed to be fixed but I would assume print problems, and compiling the extras for the release. They did not have an estimate on when it might get released at the time. While it's taking forever, at least they haven't dropped the release.
