For the 2015 AVN Awards there were 108 award categories, of which 9 were fan voted. Only 9. Why aren't many more of the awards either fan voted or voted for by a much wider number of the industry, at least several hundred people including everyone gathered there in the room. Much more akin to the Acadamy Awards aka Oscars.

During the 2015 ceremony itself, the below 18 awards were handed out, with the winners taking the stage. All of these 18 could be decided by the fans or fellow performers, and would carry more meaning because of it. None of these categories are rocket science, any fan could browse through the nominations and select their choice.
Movie of the Year
Transsexual Performer of the Year
Best Drama
Best Parody
Best Sex Scene in a Foreign-Shot Production
Director of the Year
Female Performer of the Year
Male Performer of the Year
Best Actress
Best Anal Sex Scene
Best Actor
Best New Starlet
Niteflirt Fan Award - Best Boobs
Best Star Showcase
Best Boy/Girl Sex Scene
Best Oral Sex Scene
Best Supporting Actress
Best Girl/Girl Sex Scene
So what gives? Call me cynical, but at the moment it looks like it's just a couple suits in the background deciding which way they want everything to go from a business perspective. I know this award show is ultimately about promotion of the industry but does it really need to be run as a closed racket when it comes to who wins?
At the moment on the forum there is a thread about the topic of people taking the industry seriously and having respect and regard for it. In this area, I think having a more representative, transparant and inclusive annual awards ceremony would be a positive move.

^ Yeah, all awards shows are politics. Studios and agents mount million dollar campaigns for their movies to be nominated for Oscars. Why would porn be any different?
I don't know about turning stuff over to the fans though. Have you ever watched the Peoples' Choice Awards? The general public has very shitty taste.

I'd argue that the difference is that there are actual filmmakers that vote on the Oscars (they're voted on by The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences), and actual musicians that vote on the Grammys, and so on and so forth. The AVN awards are decided by the editorial board at AVN Magazine, as far as I can tell, meaning that no one that actually makes porn votes on the AVN awards.
Edit: and the AVNs are more blatant. An Oscar campaign spends money on advertising to make people aware of X actor or Y movie. With the AVNs, the though process is whomever buys the most ads in AVN magazine are the ones who win the awards.

As far as I understand, the voters are not only the employees of AVN Magazine. E.g. Roger T. Pipe from rogreviews.com is/was a voter for some years, as he describes in his known podcast series:
http://www.rogreviews.com/35930/rog-podcasts-2014-avn-awards-voting-part-two/
And I always thought he was an "independent" critic. Isn't he?
Don Houston from XCritic writes a comment on the linked podcast entry from which it's clear that he is also a voter. Other XCritic writers (SeanDPS, Rob G. Perez, Apache Warrior...) are too. Are they all paid by AVN and do XCritic.com just as their hobby?
Our own beloved moderator bono-ONE is a voter, or has been, at least. Maybe he could just share some light on how much money he gets for his votes and from whom?

I agree with you that enabling porn-fans to vote for their favorite porn-stars and their favorite porn-scenes and porn-films is a good way to promote the porn-industry and possibly increase its sales too.
Because people usually become more committed to any activity where they actively participate and where they feel that they have some influence.
But there is also another issue here, which is credibility. Porn fans usually don't have any conflicts of interest. They are judging porn based purely on their sexual desires and feelings, without other motives. And this makes their opinions a lot more credible and believable than the opinions of people who are making money in the industry. When you are making money in the industry, then the opinions you express might depend more on the money than on your sexual feelings and desires. And porn fans know this.
But having 108 categories for porn-fans to vote on is a bit too complicated and a bit too much. If porn-fans are going to vote for porn awards, then the award categories should be chosen by porn-fans. Porn-fans know better than anybody else what it is that they want to vote on, and what doesn't interest them much.

I think at least half the categories need to be cut before anything else.

I'm a voter for AVN and if voters are getting paid, I'm doing something wrong!
There is no way they should open the voting to fans. They had the Sex Awards in September of 2013 which was a fan-based voting awards show and you saw what a fiasco that was. It lasted all of one year.
If fans were allowed to vote, Alexis Texas would win every award and she has filmed only a handflul of scenes in the last couple of years.
Popularity does not equal quality work. I know a lot of popular girls who are not that good as performers. Especially in porn, the girls who are "hot" would get more votes from the fans than the girls who actually work at their craft and put in a good scene every time out.
As mentioned above, the People's Choice Awards are a shitty awards show. Why do you want to recreate that in porn?

And, just an FYI. The Oscars are not voted on by fans either. If you did, the Avengers would win best picture.
The Oscars are voted on by the industry. Actors vote in acting categories, technical categories are voted on by the technical people.
I have never been paid for a review in my life. In fact, I let people know that I'm going to be honest in my assessment. There are a few people in the industry who expect a 5-star review every time out. But then there are others who specifically ask me to be more critical so that they can improve their craft.

I just looked at the website front page for the 2013 sex awards and it is a big spread of winners. Looks like the fans did a perfectly good job with their voting.
So long as AVN set the appropriate nominations for each category, then every winner is a worthy one. And if a performer has barely shot that past year, she likely won't make the AVN determined nomination list. If we take those primary 18 awards i listed and have the fans select from the nominations, i don't see the problem. Every nominee will make a credible winner. These 18 aren't technical awards, any porn fan will be able to have an opinion.
They aren't highly nuanced categories that only industy veterans can appreciate and decide upon. For me, at the end of the day, 'Female performer of the Year' should be about who the fans have most appreciated watching. Not weighted towards who ticked the most boxes when it comes to diversity of scenes they shot, even though barely anyone watched half of them. Or based on who is a likeable person with their shit most together and thus makes for a good face for the industry. The Performer of the Year should be whoever the fans think it is. No judgement can be more reliable than that. Because it's all ultimately about what the fans like and think and fap to and drop their money on. And the further we move from that understanding, the less relevant any of the awards are.
If some big budget porn movie is technically brilliant and innovative but no porn fan gave a shit about it, should it win an award for its technical brilliance? If Plain Jane gives the most enthusiastic, versatile and dynamic performances but the fans aren't into her, should she be an AVN award nominee? How much should the thoughts of the fans count? Currently, AVN think hardly at all.

And just so we're clear, I never said I thought the voters were getting paid. I said that I thought that the decisions on the winners of the awards were more based on who advertised the most in AVN magazine (or sponsored something at the convention or rented a big space) than any type of actual vote. And this isn't something that comes from me, this is literally something I've had performers and directors in the industry say to me when I asked them about it. And it's not like this is a new accusation either, because I think David Foster Wallace wrote something about it in the 90s.
