Hey folks, I noticed the site was down today. Now it comes up with a bunch of reviews and forum posts missing. Are y'all trying to reverse the election or something? ;)

I got to the office this morning and saw the site was down. The database server is having problems again. We lost everything that's been entered since approximately 6pm on November 5th. That's reviews, forum posts, everything.

Wow! Those darned republocrats must've broken in and tried to censor you guys!

When you say that you lost everything do you mean it's forever gone or it still exists in a backup somewhere? (just curious because I think I have archive copies of my reviews since then-if I haven't erased them yet) Thanks!

Gone, gone, no more data. I normally have real-time database replication turned on so we have a constantly running live backup on a second server. I turned off the replication in order to do some maintenance for some new features and fixes for the site. (You can't change the structure of the database tables with replication in place.) I didn't realize that the automated tape backups weren't running due to a dirty tape drive. The tapes have become a bit of a problem though. Our tape drive is only 8GB. We've got a lot more than 8GB worth of data to back up.

If you have entered any reviews since Monday afternoon we would appreciate it if you could re-enter them.

just wanted to say that i'm really sorry we lost any of Your (the grand collective you) work. i can handle redoing our work, but i feel very badly for losing reviews and forum talk. i hope that all reviewers have their work saved elsewhere.

and i'm very bummed about losing the input on the sex toy reviews - that was some good stuff

Drew, no problem. I know how busy you two are and appreciate all the work you do. We may disagree from time to time but stuff like that happens. (I remember back in the early 80's how often we were told to "make a backup disk, save all you work often".

Steph, most of us have learned to accept that every once in awhile things go wrong. It's not about fault or blame-they happen. None of us are perfect (although there are rumors of Drew being pretty darned close sometimes).

Boy, I had just posted the meaning to life in the forum too-it answered all the questions that Kevin Smith failed to answer in Dogma. Shame that it was the only copy. (it included my secret weaknesses on how to get a good dvd review on a low budget!)
