It's grainy.

The sound is fine, but the picture is grainy.

I'm not sure if they shot it on 16mm or 35mm, but it looks either like they had to over process the film; or it's a style choice.

The extras are nice; the behind the scenes mini-feature is pretty cool; I like the second audio track (tho it gets old after awhile -- how many times can you say "she fucks really well..."); the deleted scenes were nice -- tho I'm not clear why they were deleted - I suppose it "slowed the film down" tho in a porno, you'd think extra sex scenes would at worst merely be FF'd through...

It's certainly not a DigiCam transfer...

I'm a lot less critical than most as to the transfer. I think it's not anywhere close to the best work that Wicked has done in the transfer department, however, you probably could write it off as a creative decision (meaning that they didn't botch the transfer but did it that way intentionally) if Wicked hadn't apologized for it. I haven't seen the VHS, so I have no idea if it's indeed that much worse on DVD. All I can say is that it's nowhere close to Caballero or Sunshine crappy on the crappiness scale.

If anything, I would be critical of the movie itself... It's a great movie, but I'm wondering if I'm seeing the same porno as other critics who act like it's the #1 adult release of all time. From a cinematic, acting, plot, or pure sex standpoint, it certainly is one of the best of the last couple of years, but I wouldn't consider it any better than some of the other high budget Wicked features like Flashpoint.

Anyway, FWIW, I gave Dream Quest very high marks as a judge for the VSDA Best Adult DVD award, which Wicked won for Dream Quest.

Hi,

to be really honest, the picture quality is total crap :
obviously they didn't care for the quality of the film stock, it was shot on 16mm I think but even the much lower-budget Andrew Blake releases (for instance) are a LOT crisper and care was given to the film development.
Since they shot with 2 cameras most of the time, one angle always looks crappy (usually over-exposed, grainy etc.) while the other one is fine.. take a look at the dialogue scenes, esp. the scene with the gatekeeper.. it's completely horrible!
I'm sorry, but if Ms. Jameson wouldn't ask for $60.000 of the $200.000 budget, I think the film might have looked a lot better..

Just take a look for yourself. You be the judge. DeathIncarnate hates everything we do. So If it's not a VCA title he'll bash it. Most everyone here is pretty fair and it is still one of the best discs of the year. To take a look and tell us what you think.

The picture quality was a little grainy, but it wasn't that bad. The quality of the sex, plot, costumes and sets made up for it. I loved the movie! In my opinion, it's a must see.

To David Crawford :

I think you're being a little unfair yourself here..
did I not bash SHAYLA'S WEB? Yes, I did, and it's a VCA title.. they put out a lot of crap, especially in the last few months, and Ninn's movies tend to suck at the moment.
Do I think their FJ Lincoln and Bud Lee features are better than Brad Armstrong's ? No, I certainly don't, but how luck would have had it, screening copies usually were for Wicked titles and I don't buy everything there is just to write reviews.

But be honest, the picture quality just doesn't measure up at all with the rest of DREAM QUEST.. except for the phony wings on the fairies, I LIKED the sets and costumes, the music was GREAT, and the DVD was certainly the best I've seen last year. I didn't write a whole review because I didn't feel like it at the time and now it's a bit late in the game.

I just found that the bad video quality (though it's admittedly not the transfer that's to blame) is at odds with a lot of the good moments, from a cinematography and art direction point of view.
You have to admit that I have a point talking about Blake who is a really great DP, or Philip Mond's ZAZEL for that matter.

So, don't be too offended, I haven't seen the much touted movies such as DOUBLE FEATURE yet, and I'll probably like that one.

I'd give DREAM QUEST a total of say 4 / 5, with a better extras rating, and 2 / 4 for a/v quality

Personally, I like wicked's much-hymed Dreamquest DVD in several ways. To be wholly frank, the sound quality leaves nothing to be desired but picture is quite grainy . Overall, I don't deny that it is one of the great movies that have ever been produced in pornos. However, sex scenes didn't impressed me much.

That is why I have my opinion. I hope that one day I'll do a DVD you really like.

to ookz :

I didn't wanna bring you off your purchase altogether, the DVD itself is very good, I just wanted to comment on the video quality. It is a bit too expensive like all Wicked titles, but since a lot of stores have lowered the prices, I would go for it anyway (eg. at DVD Empire you can get it for $ 15.99 with the coupon!)

Oh well, it's hard to decide, if you can rent it anywhere, try that first..

ookz, I wouldn't cancel Dream Quest. The picture is a little grainy but I think it added to the artistic feel of the movie. The sound was also pretty good. It's one of the best movies I've seen last year. Unlike DeathIncarnate, of course I'm one of the reviewers that likes almost everything that Wicked does.
Just teasing, DeathIncarnate, although I really do like almost everything Wicked's put out.

I liked it and I am probably the fussiest reviewer on ADT when it comes to audio/video quality. Read what I said if you get a chance:
Dream Quest

I like Wicked Productions at least as much as Astro does too. They spend more money and it shows. I don't want to watch lousy looking, red tinted crud all the time-if I did, I know Pleasure could fill the gap. I prefer features over all super gross hardcore too. Wicked is one of the best in that genre.

BTW, David doesn't give me anything (movies included) to say all that either-he couldn't afford me.

David,

Dreamquest and Flashpoint are the first Adult DVDs my wife and I have bought. We had rented Flahpoint a year or so ago, and caught Dreamquest on the tube.

The Dreamquest disc is fantastic!! So there's a little grain. It hardly detracts from the viewing experience. Honestly, the only thing I noticed was when one shot was brighter than another.

And the extras were great as well!! I didn't expect to laugh that much.

Thanks for a great disc!

ookz, why do you want to get dreamquest? Do you like Jenna, Brad Armstrong? Are you a wicked fan from a lot of their other work?

The flik is a great flik. The video quality is grainy. KINDA like a VCR tape gets when its watched an exorbitant amount of times. I would prefer that it be crystal clear; however, the poor video quality is probably NOT a good reason to NOT get the flik. There is too much else about it that is above par.

There's a scene with Randy Spears Johnnie black and one other lady who's name I'm blocking that is super hot! Despite the grainess, you can see everything fine and it's a turn on. And the whole feel of the flik is neat and fun. The graininess is disappointing but at the same time it can come off as "artistic expression" in the flik; I wondered if the grainess was put in on purpose for a little bit. I'm glad it wasn't though :)

Bottom line: If your getting it only cause you heard it's good and A/V quality is super important to you--pass.

But if there is anything else about the film that draws you--director, stars, plot, etc.--I'd get it, even with the less than ideal video quality.
