There is a lot of soft core porn that does more to peak the sexual arousal than a lot of the hardcore material.
A good example from my own experience is with Antonio Adamo's Sex Forever. We aren't big Adamo fans as neither of us care for the camera waving that he has the women do. But the pickings for good couples oriented fare at the local mom and pop shop was a bit slim, so I picked up the X rated VHS on a rental. It was pretty good, and didn't have as much camera waving as some of his other videos.
At the same store, the edited (cable) version was displayed in the main area next to the everything else. Being curious, I watched this too. It was much hotter in the 'erotic' department that the explicit version. Go figure!
