First three episodes are up and I burned through them. Excellent so far, balanced and humourous.

What are they like? Or to be more exact what kind of stupid are they?

Eh, I mean, a couple of these reviews actually make sense to me. That joke sounds incredibly tasteless and I have to wonder about the approach to the subject.

Yeah those aren't as silly as I assumed they would be. The tone is oddly cheerful at points (I don't recall the joke) but I get the feeling the hosts are just presenting both sides at this point as a rhetorical technique, I doubt that is where they're going to land.

I suspect they will present the industry's view only to puncture it. I don't get the sense they are dismissing or questioning her abuse which is well covered but I'm assuming the tone will darken as the series progresses.

I do think Traci's narrative about her behaviour in the industry is disengenous (see the claim about her first use of coke) but then she was an abused 15-year-old let loose in porn so none of her behaviour is that surprising.

It is a shame she felt the need to dissemble but that is the nature of presenting a victim narrative in the US. Ambiguities would not have been welcome in her attempts to 'reform' and enter the mainstream.

Ok, I am all caught up on the four episodes. I can see why people didn't appreciate the tone (it's a bit cheeky, which may not be the appropriate approach to a topic like this...). The joke was also in poor taste, although I am not sure I would have noticed it without reading those reviews. Regardless of these problems, it is well made and the interviews are fantastic. An investigation of this story from more than just one perspective is long overdue.

(Side note, I tried to start investigating myself as I was writing a paper about the edited re-releases and even tried to track down the people that produced the Talk Dirty to Me films starring Lords. Alas, no luck, and I was informed that they likely wouldn't want to talk about it. Understandable. So, I am glad we finally have some insight into the various feelings and thoughts industry people had/have).

One thing they mentioned that I didn't realize was just how many videos Traci made.

I think I was assuming the production rate of the film era where she wouldn't have been able to shoot that many features in 3 years.

I've enjoyed listening to the podcast, particularly for the interviews and stories, but while I'm personally skeptical of the picture Traci has painted of herself and her time in the business, I do find it quite one-sided. They seem to pick apart every aspect of her story, but pretty much let everyone else skate. I find it very hard to believe that none of these folks knew, or suspected, she was underage. Sure, she had a legitimate "fake" ID, but there are many things that can reveal one's age: voice, speech patterns, body language, growth spurts, range of knowledge, etc. Anyone who spent any significant time with her, like Tom Byron, should have had at least a clue.

As an addendum, I would note that I haven't heard the full podcast yet, just the 4-5 episodes that have been released to date. In the Vanity Fair article, Lili says something to the effect that the last several episodes are very much on Traci's side.

^ I don't know, hundreds of thousands, probably millions of people saw Traci in films and I've never heard anyone suggest they spotted her as underage before it was revealed.

A lot of women enter the industry at 18 and a street smart 15 year-old seems likely to pass muster. There were performers like Velvet Summers who looked a lot younger than Traci and she was of age.

By the mid-80s the industry was pretty big business thanks to VHS and from what I've read the mob's influence on the West Coast wasn't as prominent as it was on the East. There are stories of some performers starting when they were 17 in the 70s but even during the Wild West of the early to mid-70s when porn was more underground a 15-year-old seems to have been beyond the pale.

I can't imagine many producers or directors, knowing how dangerous it was to shoot someone underage, would have risked it knowingly.

I can imagine people thinking, "She looks young for her age." But people mature at different rates and she had a driver's license. If someone asked for a birth certificate, she could have produced one, and she got a passport while she was in the industry.

I strongly suspect that her "step-father" molested her. If it's true that he masturbated during her first shoot, that should have been a red flag. But I don't consider Traci a reliable witness, and I think she may be the only source for this story.

I tend to believe the industry who said they were shocked.

^ Yeah it is also central as the podcast discusses that Traci's fake ID was good enough to fool the government who issued her a passport under her fake identity. That obviously cut the whole case against the industry off at the knees.

I see no reason to doubt Traci's story of abuse either, her stepdad who brought her to the meeting with Jim South knew she was underage, kind of amazing he was allowed to walk but obviously the LAPD and Feds were more interested in going after the industry.

^ & ^^ If Lords was not abused by her stepfather, at the very least she was brought to the agency by her stepfather who (as BS points out) knew she was a minor. Jim South mentions in the podcast the stepfather being with her. So that's a corroborating testimony in terms of the stepfather being present. That renders him an abuser simply by virtue of bringing her there.

Oof, the Traci Lords thread in the Porn Pool reminds me how much I value the intelligent conversations we have here on the Feature Side.

So the podcast is taking another turn with its most recent episode, as I suspected they seem to be trying to find a more ambigious truth that is neither anti-Traci nor anti-porn.

Surprised to hear David Thomson, the respected if lately curmudgeonly film critic, on the podcast to talk briefly about The Deer Hunter. I love the first hour of that film set in Traci's old hometown, to me it is by far the best part of that film that take a dive once they go off to Vietnam.

When I said, "I strongly suspect that her 'step-father' molested her," I wasn't trying to minimize the fact that knowingly bringing a 15-year-old to a porn agent is not only a felony, but deeply immoral and troubling. No ifs about it: He abused her.

My main point was that if he masturbated during the shoot, the porn community couldn't reasonably claim that they had no idea. I'm skeptical of Traci's allegation, but it's not totally implausible given what we already know about her "step-father".

^ Yeah, hard to know, but that was just one shoot and they could have assumed he was a creepy suitcase pimp, not her stepfather.

So it was a passport not driving ID? this is a fed document. Someone hire up pushed this through, could've been a set up.

^ She obtained the passport using a driver's license and (I believe?) a birth certificate. Some believe that the federal document is why the case fizzled out--too embarrassing and draws attention to the failings of the government.

Listened to episode 7 of the podcast. This episode was rather pointless. There wasn't any real insight into Traci or industry in this one.

Episodes 7 & 8 are sketching out the social background of Traci I think. Could have been one episode instead of two but I think they were taken with the personalities and stories of Traci's teenage lovers.

In the most recent episode they did note that several underage girls are known to have worked in the industry with the knowledge of at least some persons (a male performer of that era recounted an anecdote about one on-set revelation). As long as there was "plausible deniability" (such as a real government-issued ID), they said, a blind eye might be turned.

^ Sharon Mitchell and I believe Jean Silver say they started when they were 17 (Silver for sure said she started working for the Mitchell's stripclub at 17, unsure if she shot her debut at 17).

Jean Jennings is rumoured to have been 17 when she started although that may just be because she always looked young and played jailbait roles, similar to Velvet Summers.

I think Sharon Mitchell might have said as much in a RialtoReport interview. I'm guessing an email to the show might be able to confirm (or deny).

It seems the relevant authorities didn't care about Sharon Mitchell– probably because it wouldn't generate the media spectacle that was they really wanted out of the Traci Lords story. Still, it feels a little odd given how society almost always sensationalizes the issue.

^ I recall her saying on the RR. But, no offense to Ms. Mitchell, she was not known to not be the most reliable source in porn. At the same time I can't see much reason she'd lie about it.
