I see that TVX/VCX has put out a new dvd of The Story of Joanna, and I was wondering if anyone has picked it up and if you have what is the quality of this dvd like? I have the Excalibur Films dvd release of this movie, and it's not too bad in picture quality, but I have read that that release might be edited, although I can't spot any obvious edits in it. The Excalibur Films dvd runs about 83 minutes, the boxcover on the TVX release says it's 90 minutes, but I learned long ago not to put much trust in the runtime printed on boxcovers. Just wondering if anyone can give us some info. on this new release of this classic.
Thanks,

I have got the TVX DVD right here (VCX and TVX are now two different companies btw) so let's try to answer your questions.
There is no runningtime on the boxcover I have (where did you see the one mentioning 90 minutes?), but the movie is 1h19m42s according to my DVD-player. I can see no obvious cuts, but I have never seen the Excalibur version. IAFD mentions a running time of 86 minutes, but conversion to DVD can change times a few %, but I always forget the exact details.

Sound is good, picture is good for a movie of that age. The chaptering could be a bit better, I like having a lot of chapterstops. And one very annoying thing, if you go to the trailers menu you can't go back to the main menu, I'll tell them about that.

Aside from the trailers there are no extra's.

All in all a decent release of an alltime classic, I'll probably add it to our classics section.

Thanks jacco, actually I think I saw the 90 minute runtime listed on a website offering this dvd, they had the runtime listed, it wasn't on the boxcover I don't think. Sounds like the new dvd might be missing something though just from the runtime but like you said the runtime can be altered if it was from a PAL source or something like that. Doesn't sound like one I need to upgrade to this release, as the Excalibur Films dvd is of basic vhs quality.

I haven't seen the new DVD of The Story of Joanna being sold. For a while, roughly 3 years, VCX distributed TVX titles but now TVX appears to be doing it's own distribution. According to this AVN article on the new disc it is complete and the master was cleaned up.

As for the history of the previous discs. The "Excalibur Exclusive" release contains the complete 86 minute film from what I have heard. The Alpha Blue Archives release is presented in the original widescreen aspect ratio but is edited only running 76 minutes, the reels were mastered in the wrong order and it has very poor picture quality.

Hope this helps, BTW: Jacco YGM.

TVX has just started their own distribution, they are still starting it up, we just received our first shipment from them, so I'll expect other retailers will also start selling them anytime now.

BTW Flash, YGM too.

Thank's for the link to that article Flash, I wasn't aware that TVX was a separate company from VCX, I thought they were like a sublabel of VCX or something. I checked out some of their releases, they have quite a few that look interesting.

Hi there, how did you measure the length of this film, from the when the "The End" comes up or from when all the credits are done? What version is 83 mins and 14 sec when the credits are done?

Thanks

I use from the opening logos to the end of the credits when determining time.

I don't have all the seconds here but none of the releases are 83 minutes.

Alpha Blue Archives release 73 min (rounded)
TVX release 80 min (rounded)
Excalibur Exclusive release (DVD-R) 86 min (rounded)

I forgot to add, at least on the TVX disc (the only one I have) there are no end credits. It just gives The End and a © 1978 TVX Films on it.

Hmm mine says at the end at the bottom copyright 1975. I double checked the length and it is 83 mins and 14 secs. Without the end credits it 81 mins and 54 sec.

Thanks Gun, that sounds like it is the same length as the Excalibur Films version, I will have to end up picking this up now as I read the quality is supposed to be much better than any other versions. The only thing I was concerned about was that it might be missing a lot of footage.

I dont know what version it is as it a custom DVD. I dont like buying edited DVDs so I never do. I dont understand these companies that put out these dam edited DVDs, why bother. Also how the hell do they get away with calling them uncut, when there arent. Thank god for people who have orginal reel copies.

Gun, does that mean your 83 min version is a custom made DVD from the original reel? That might explain why none of the regular versions are 83 minutes.

Oh wow, TVX, thank you for posting your list of titles!! I am ecstatic and hope you really will take much care with releasing these titles. I hope you don't take the VCA way out and edit these titles. For example, when ANNA OBSESSED comes out in January '06, if you delete the rape scene, then the whole second half of the movie will make no sense at all. Very fine film. Also, if you can get extras, that would be a major plus. You should also know that Video-X-Pix just released their own version of THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS...don't know how or why, but it just came out this year.

Wow, I haven't been this excited over classic porn DVD releases in a while! Please be sure to post the retail website as soon as it's available, and thanks again for posting!

Hey Joplin...

The rape scene in "Anna Obsessed" is of great concern to us especially now, with the strict Federal regulations overseeing every niche in our industry. We probably could get away with it - still it is ultimately up to the company owner & our editor whether or not to leave it in. I know that in such films we have like Bob Chinn's "Baby Cakes" - we left Rhonda Jo Petty's rape scenes intact - simply because they are at the core of the movie. And thank you - we are fully aware of both Video-X-Pix & Arrow's versions of "Through the Looking Glass".Classic films that are in public domain for any length of time can ultimately be snapped up by a few classic manufacturers & released at the same time - it's simply a crap shoot.

More excellent news! Welcome TVXCreative! The first adult film I saw was "Anna Obsessed" and I remember a powerful scene between John Leslie and Susan McBain, not to mention the scene between Annette Haven and Constance Money.
I look forward to many of the films on your list, especially "Beauty" and "7 into Snowy". Will "7 into Snowy" now contain the entire Abigail Clayton orgy scene at the end of the film? The current release has been chopped up.
Thanks again for your efforts!

Are these releases taken from the same elements as the VCX editions? I'm wondering if we can expect any significant improvement in image quality. The VCX release of Mary! Mary! , for instance, looked horrible.

I'd also be interested to hear about the completeness of these releases. I never actually bought Seven Into Snowy because of the missing footage and apparently poor transfer. On the other hand, I seem to remember that VCX released potentially difficult titles like Little Orphan Dusty uncut; will TVX be following this precedent?

Dover, I thought I'd posted in this thread before but seem to be mistaken. The TVX version of Joanna is missing footage during the scene in which Terri Hall dreams of being ravished. Specifically, the fisting has been removed somewhere along the way.

Hey SDC...

TVX Films is earnestly trying to improve not only the color transfer as well as the overall look of each film but the sound - keeping certain scenes of question in mind, absolutely. We are not using the same editor's nor the same authoring system as was used at VCX. With titles like "Little Orphan Dusty", I do believe it is left intact. I'm sure that there will always be missing / edited footage here & there - which sadly is the game most classic companies play when releasing sevearl versons of the same title - which is better, which has the better cover, etc.. Still, we are also not trying to unload a pile of shotty titles on the consumers simply to increase our library of classic films out there. Also, even though these films are (some) well over 25 years old - none of us ever know if we will fall under the hammer of the government's microscope at any time - thus the reason for the editing & the accurate records we keep I'm sure.

Hi there, as it sounds like you plan to edit some movies do to content. Is there any way you can make a DVD-R uncut version of the movies that you deem risky and have them as a Special order with an extra cost to them.

Hey Gun..

Please make no mistake, we will keep the original masters intact, yet still edit (if at all necessary) certain scenes - ie: pee, very rough rape enactment, certain foreign object insertion, etc. for release to the general public. Also, I'm sure that special orders are no problem, especially with product so ancient (lol). Seriously, editing scenes from these classics are the last thing we are envisioning now. Still, your input is very valuable to us & I appreciate your suggestions..

We are taking it as a picture by picture project...
