I'm an Onlyfans creator, and I think that a new era will necessary end up happening, sooner than later, because creators on Onlyfans are just becoming too greedy. They make you pay for the subscription, but then turn most of their videos into pay-per-view videos, so you constantly have to buy, again and again. So as soon as a new reliable platform will prioritize as much their creators as their consumers, it will be the end. It's not normal not to be able to know what you're paying for before you already paid for something. I made the personal decision not to do this, and just include all my videos with the premium subscription, but I've been told many times that only a few content creators do so.
Second, I think you are right, just any guy can become a pornstar. You just have to be sucked and/or to be fucking girls who will attract the audience 😄 I personally film myself while making sure not to show my full face so I'm still anonymous, and the guy I suck is even more anonymous, since you would have to see his boner in real life to know who he is in 😆 It doesn't always cost money to do so, sometimes it's just about finding the right person 🙂
Only fans is not a substitute. It's a lucrative side hustle for pornstars and a platform for amateur creators.

Personally I want to see great sex. The guy is just as important as the girl. Maybe even more important. The girl draws the attention, the guy makes or breaks the scene. I guess that it also depends on the type of porn. For instance, in a gloryhole, there is not much space for the male performer to shine, although the look of his dick will matter a lot. A blowbang is a bit similar, in the sense that since there are many guys, the focus is more on her than on them. But of course, if we are talking about a scene where the male performer is actively fucking her, his performance will make or break the scene, as you said. I think that I'm just biased since I mostly do and watch oral sex porn.
Onlyfans is a substitute and another way to get income. I try onlyfans it was like a virtual strip clubs and 5 to 20 mins sex scenes over 50 to 200 dollars. I rather go to a strip club and spend money on the feature like 60 or 100 for nude photos. I love professional porn because of the directors, companies and who are the girls in the movie. As Alizee mentioned, I guess that Onlyfans is mostly good for fetish porn. For instance, n my case, it's cum on food porn. There is not much of that in professional productions, so Onlyfans makes it possible to have more content like that. But other than that, I would tend to agree that professional productions are generally better, for many reasons, such as lighting, filming gear, numerous actors available making it possible to do high-quality group sex scenes, etc.

Yup the 2020 pandemic (*) has made a LOT of DIY people do their own thing on OnlyFans, including making sure to spam your inbox via auto-bots. Everyone has their own schtick: some offer everything (not paywalls) with one monthly price, while others offer only cheap DIY selfies and sell their clips at $20-$50 a pop even if you paid a monthly entrance fee.
(*) Don't forget the Dec. 8 2020 crackdown on tubesites which essentially forced a lot of DIYers to either legit up or just evaporate into nothingness.
And yes, I have seen a LOT of guys attempting to become some kind of male pornstar on this platform but that's really niche, in the sense that unless they actually have access to a variety of other performers, as well as shoot good quality stuff (i.e. not the vertical cell phone under natural lights that ANYONE can shoot), chances are they won't last long nor be a consistent creator.
OnlyFans is a rather un-reliable platform because there is zero garantee for you, the paying consumer. I've said it before: site like MV (ManyVids) actually offer some kind of garantee if a performer does not deliver on a custom video for example, whereas OnlyFans, it's basically you hoping the person is trustworthy.
However I think it boils down to what you want to see. There is still a LOT of demand for high-quality porn done by pros and distributed by legit companies, because that is what the majority of people want.
When it comes to fetish and niche stuff, again it depends on what you seek and what you want. I have found that a LOT of OnlyFans tend to have one "general" speciality but also try to cater to the broadest market possible. Rare are those who actually offer a single, specific fetish.
In any case I find that if it's bonafide pornstars you want to see, better stay with the majors. But if you are looking for something specific, or have a thing for someone specific, then make sure you do your research before subscribing to their OF because there are a LOT of scam artists over there who are, like business, like corporate imperialism, just there to make a profit, let alone a living.
