Ukraine Bans Porn Unless It's "Medical"

President Viktor Yushchenko signed the law today over the objections of human rights activists and artists who had asked him to veto it. Now pornography can be kept only “for medical purposes,” according to the Ukrainian Ministry of Justice. Penalties for possession of porn range from a fine to up to three years in prison. The Ukraine has long had a reputation as a source for child pornography, and the passage of the law is seen by some as move to protect children's rights. People who like porn are actually encouraged to work more than discouraged over the long run. Computers, DVDs, web site subscriptions and internet connections all cost money. Lots of money. If nothing else, they have to buy drives and discs to keep it all on. Still not cheap enough to do if you have no income. My guess is if there are people who are enjoying porn while being unemployed, it's more coincidental than anything else. They'd probably rather be employed so they can buy more porn. And there's also the issue that men who are employed and who can afford it will probably simply attempt to emigrate to a country where porn is legal so they'll lose many of the productive workers and business people they actually do have. Who wants to live somewhere where you can't even enjoy the fruits of your labor? I think Ukraine will end up paying for their policy. I doubt they have the resources to go arresting everyone who has porn anyway but if they do, let them try. It will bankrupt them and then maybe a more reasonable government will take over. But despite that, Thailand has a thriving sex industry. Perhaps the Ukrainian government wants to boost employment for their sex-workers. Horny guys will have to go out and spend some real cash on the available ladies, instead of sitting at home and viewing some cheap adult DVDs from foreign countries. And they get shitty computers the rest of the world no longer wants, though good enough for pornsurfing. And then I was being kind of ironic, like I often am. With the american bullshit about porn addiction, it's an interesting take that porn should be banned for the same reasons. It's all in the name of controlling the population and keeping it at least slightly unhappy so it will find little pieces of happiness and think it's all worth it. Click to expand I've been in Ukraine some time ago. And my impression is that vast majority of people there don't yet have an internet connection at home. And a lot of people there don't have computers at home either. Most people can go to an Internet Cafe. But that's not the kind of place where you can surf for porn. Because most computer screens there are visible to the public. Probably CDs and DVDs are the media most people there use for watching porn. But their recent law against porn probably won't affect much the supply and demand for it. Because many government officials in Ukraine are corrupt. And they will let the porn through as long as they get paid some bribes. This anti-porn law is just a way for politicians to distract the public from the government's incompetence in dealing with the economy and other problems in the country. They will have elections soon. And the politicians probably want to create a distraction for voters and divide those voters who agree on the economy but not on the freedom of expression. Many people in Ukraine will probably break this law regularly. And this will give a ready excuse for the police and the government to search and arrest any people they don't like. It's a common ploy for all authoritarian governments to make a law that most people will likely break. I've been to egypt and it seemed every guy was using internet cafés for this purpose. Porn is a powerful thing. And Egypt is muslim no less. But yeah outlawing common 'immoral' 'bad habits' is of course a statement and often used in times of instability, makes some people feel confident the government actually have the power to fix Something. I'm not so sure about distraction, since this kind of stupid legislation get a lot of coverage internationally, medias won't just focus on the topic at hand but the overall condition of the state. Also, it's funny how 'Childrens rights' are so important in some cases, and so very not in other cases. I would like to know how much of the budget goes to schools, seems to me school funding is the first to go when dealing with a suffering economy. But then... since when did anyone with a political carreer care about the future? [Link]

Click to expand I've been in an internet cafe in a middle-eastern country (not Egypt). And there they usually place computers in private cubicles where the guy surfing the web has some privacy. Which makes it easy to surf for porn. But in Ukraine, there are no private cubicles in internet cafes. And most computers there are arranged in such a way that other people can often see the screen of your computer. Quite often there are women and children in the internet cafe too. And in such a situation few men would dare to surf for porn, especially after porn has been officially made illegal in the country. Somebody might call the police in such a situation.
