Hey Skronker,
Great interview with Steve Hirsch. Interviewing producers and company owners is a great change of pace (I'm still waiting for you to interview Drew and/or Steph).
Anyway, I don't mean to complain or slam you, but why does every question you ask include "you know" and "um" after about every third or fourth word? Seriously, I don't mean to bust your nuts but after a while I don't hear the questions, just the repetition.
Again, great piece and very informative.

Ever try interviewing somebody when it's being recorded? It's not rare.

If you're doing it on the fly without notes or anything else for the questions, odds are you're going to be "um-ing" and "you know-ing". There's a couple of my interviews that went that way, and even after I got in the groove of doing them I could see one heck of a difference between notes and not when I listened back at them to transcribe them.

Written and verbal communication are two different art forms. Both take pratice, but to really be accomplished in one, sometimes the other takes a back seat.

In other cases, sometimes ums are indicative of deep thought. Or it can be nerves.

IMO skronker is really good at these things. He makes them conversational and lets them go where the interview subject takes them. (Sometimes the person being interviewed doesn't have much to say.)

BTW, we don't transcribe the interviews. That's far too much effort.

Mine would be boring.

I'm waiting for him to interview Rog.

Here in New York, as Skronker will tell you, we had a Mayor named Ed Koch, who would err and umm, quite literally, every three or four words. People loved it, as it was probably his only endearing trait.

I used to do it a lot in answering questions, but I wasn't really aware of HOW much I did it until I listened to one of my taped interviews. Once I became aware, I practiced just pausing while thinking of what to say, rather than just filling the dead space with ummmmmmm.......
Now I still say ummm sometimes, but it's a heck of a lot less than I used to. :)

I do like Skronker's variety of questions, but I have to side with Archibald's comments about the ummms being a little distracting.

Wasn't he the one on People's Court?

Edit - I like Skronker's interviews, BTW.

"umm"
"like"
"you know what I'm sayin' "

A lot of Americans seem to be able to make a lot of noise and sentences with those three lines. :P

On the other hand I listened to 3 interviews today and I didn't notice what Archibald noticed about Skronker.

Interviews were good and interesting, keep em coming!

Today is Stevie's 53rd birthday. Hang in there, old bastard. If you're still alive on New Year's Eve I can put you on my death pool list.
