lavasoft's been caught removing products from their detection lists(notably whenU) in exchange for payment from spyware companies.

thanks bill, i couldn't remember where i saw it. it's actually been news for a few days now and it's still probably useful if you've got an older version and stop updating it. assuming they didn't write something nasty into it.

The problem is that several of the anti-spyware software companies are being sued by several of the largest adware-producing companies.

In a compromise, some of the anti-spyware companies have agreed to de-list specific adware if it agrees to supply a complete uninstaller with its install. In addition, the anti-spyware companies are including the uninstallers on their download pages.

For example, Lavasoft has de-listed "WhenU" but the uninstaller for WhenU is included on Lavasoft's website.

Most of the better anti-spyware programs -- Lavasoft's Ad-aware and Kolla's Spybot Search & Destroy, for example -- are from small companies with very limited resources. By comparison, the spyware companies are relatively rich with revenue streams generated by their advertising clients.

As distasteful as I find the current compromise, I don't see much of an alternative.

Tell that to Bill Gates, him being argually the richest guy in the US I doubt he's gonna take any shit from anybody so expect Microsoft AntiSpyware to dominate in the near future. For those of you who don't know yet Microsoft bought Giant AntiSpyware and came out with their own Microsoft brand version which now in beta.

I agree with that, microsoft probably wont take that crap.
but what i really want is a class A firewall, anti spy and AV bundled with windows, if microsoft really cares about its users security. I think they have enough money to every American ten times, they should just that and trust me it will increase their credibility and confidence in its customers.
