LCD monitors are *generally* less bright, less crisp, and have a smaller viewing angle than good CRT's. They also have a slower refresh rate. Most cheap LCD's are in the range of 25ms; if you game or play action DVD's, you'll want something in the 9-16ms range. Image quality, brightness, and viewing angle vary widely. A good analogy is that of a laptop computer screen--some are really good and some are really bad.

I also find that a good CRT (such as a Trinitron monitor) with a very high refresh rate is much easier on the eyes over time than an LCD which has a lower, fixed refresh.

Prices have plummeted over the past couple of years, and if you wait another 6-12 months, you'll be able to find 19" and 20" LCDs for the price of 17" ones today. The LCD I bought this summer is now going for $130 cheaper than I paid for it.

But playing certain games on a Good LCD is wonderful.

Now if you are a die hard photoshop user. I think a good CRTs still wins over an LCD.

The ideal solution is to get two monitors: the 22-inch 2070 monster for accurate graphics and gaming and a second 17/18-inch LCD that swivels for horizontal or vertical operation for text and other uses on the side. This turns out to be ideal for photoshop -- your images are on the 2070 and all the tools and palettes and things are on the flat screen -- which takes up very little additional desk space.
